  • Aussie Kmart Sold "I Heart Rich Boys" Thongs To Girls

Mimicking the painfully embarrassing stories of the recent past (remember that "I'm too pretty for homework" shirt from JCPenny?), Kmart in Australia got caught selling thongs emblazoned with the words, "I ♥ Rich Boys."

While this cutesy-but-ditsy underwear is offensive in its insinuation that men are the ones who should work (while women do what? Stay at home and eat bon-bons?), the even more offensive part is that the the underwear were being sold from the brand GirlXpress. While it is up for debate, most people feel that a brand called GirlXpress is going to be aimed at, well, girls -- not juniors, not women, but girls.

After a Twitter campaign, Kmart pulled the underwear from all stores.

I still have to ask: what do you think of stores that carry merchandise that appears to encourage this kind of mindset in young girls? From the "I'm too pretty for homework" shirt at JCPenny, to the "Eat Less" shirt at Urban Outfitters, to these panties, do you think stores should be held responsible... or is it up to parents (in the case of children's clothes) or the individual to just buy or not buy?

damn people are overly sensitive . i think the better question is why are they selling thongs to girls - - not juniors, not women, but girls ?

  • ChelseaSmilesMore@xanga

what happens to all the recalled panties?

  • here4onething@xanga

those are pretty trashy to begin with, but the little girls section? Does not belong there at all! There has to be some kind of mistake, no parents would buy those i would hope!

  • waldesau@xanga

    hahahahahahahaha

those are underwear are so tackyand also i agree, people are so overly-sensitive. like it's just a pair of underwear. whoever buys underwear with gliterry lettering saying things like "call me" must be a nut job anyway
  • opticalnoise@xanga

You know... I wonder what would happen if Kmart had sold glittery thong underwear that said "I <3 Rich Boys" to boys?

  • CDannika@xanga

People need to stop being so overly sensitive. Its just fucking underwear. Sure, they probably shouldn't be selling thongs to children, but do you really think that "I <3 Rich Boys" is going to matter to a child? Or like they are going to live by that statement? Cheese and fucking rice. People can't sneeze in this world anymore without someone judging them about it, how its going to affect everyone around them, and their future. ITS JUST UNDERWEAR. On little girls that still think boys have cooties for Christs sake!!!! Man, I didn't know that a pair of underwear for a child is going to influence them to be gold diggers for the rest of their lives. Might as well frame the bastard and create a shrine around it.

omg honestly who gives a shit, people think way too much into this and make a huge deal out of nothing. find something better to do with your time

  • Semper_medusa@xanga

I  try to stay away from all caps, but I seriously think this calls for it! WE LIVE IN A CAPITALIST SOCIETY! IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT, DON'T BUY IT!

  • Semper_medusa@xanga

@CDannika@xanga - I agree, and honestly, everyone is worried about the words? I'm a bit more shocked that they make thongs for children, just saying.

  • enoughtodiefor@xanga

    @opticalnoise@xanga - haha that's what I thought when I saw the title

  • anunderagemind@xanga

Its not for children though. The GirlXpress brand is for young women. Where did you get your information from?

  • blondiedeam@xanga

I, too, am usually one of those people who think people these days are overly-sensitive and it'sI annoying and whattnot. but i have to admit, this does bother me..esp if it's being sold in a little girls/juniors whatever section. because for one, i think it's disturbing that girls that young in age buy thongs (to me they should be restricted to age 16/17 and up. everyone admit it, thongs are a form of very sexual underwear. at least as a society that's the way we perceive them) and also because two, i do believe it sets a bad example. young children, especially girls, are very fragile and naive. they'll believe and follow anything that they believe society is telling them is "ok" and "cool". they're very impressionable. so if our society is in a way saying, "hey it's ok to wear a thong that says you love rich guys. it's what the cool kids are doing". Because i believe that to them, they'll think thong=sexual object, therefore they'll attain to become that solely, and they'll also think, "i love rich guys"=i dont need to set goals for myself or obtain a career of my own, or be an independent woman. I can get a rich man to do that for me.

In being overly sensitive, i think it's pretty annoying when grown adults go all hoo-ha about everything that is intended lightheartedly, they should be able to determine if it;s worth getting upset about or not.

But when it comes to children, girls or boys, then i believe it's the right time (well, actually, sometimes. depends. People saying video games make children violent is b.s to me) to start thinking about the direction our culture and society is heading, and if that direction benefits or hurts them. Children are our future and do we really want our countries future growing up on the idea that it's ok for young girls to wear thongs and shallowly dig rich guys?

All in all, this is my opinion. And who knows, i could be wrong and maybe this brand isn't intended for children, maybe i misunderstood the information that was given to me. If that's the case, then well damn, i just wasted about 15 minutes writing. lol.

  • anunderagemind@xanga

@blondiedeam@xanga - Yeah they messed up. Its not for children at all. I'm not sure where they got that information from. They sell that kind of trashy stuff there to young women and definitely not children.
I wish people would actually check sources and whether its accurate before reacting.

  • written_conversations@xanga

Ohh, my god, who cares?! Those look like they're aimed at young teenagers, maybe ages 12-15, and when I was that age, I wore underwear with stupid slogans on all the time. Yeah, some were "dirty", some probably did have sexual innuendos, but nobody else saw them apart from me and maybe my girlfriends at sleepovers. People need to relax and stop making such a damn fuss over everything.

  • Hinase@xanga

Honestly, I've worn worse statements on that and seen a lot worse when I was growing up. Maybe people weren't as sensitive as they were then? I dunno. I do feel like people freak out over everything and are over sensitive. If it was such a big issue, why wasn't it stopped when I was growing up? The mind is sure boggled over that silliness.

people are way too sensitive. i like them, i think they're cute. if i had a daughter and she wanted them, i'd say no. why? because of the thong aspect, not the saying! lol.

  • hot_metalhead@xanga

@opticalnoise@xanga - I think the universe might implode if that happened!

  • Mind_of_Eplx@xanga

They should have "Eat me" on them not that would be something.

@ChelseaSmilesMore@xanga -  They could give them to employees

@the_loner_stoner@xanga -  I say that all the time

  • T0m03@xanga

    Little girls wear thongs? Gross...

  • SpOnTaNeOuS_sPiTbAlL@xanga

i highly doubt they were selling thongs to little girls. i think you're wrong.

  • irisbitterman

Not a big deal, I see underwear like this everywhere. It may be aimed at girls, but let's be honest, any half-sane parent would not let their 8 year old buy this.

  • corporatecrow@xanga

i can see where people would think this is overly sensitive, but i think it's the little stuff like this that's the most dangerous, because it can slip under the radar.  sexism and gender stereotypes are so firmly entrenched in our society that people don't see this as a problem, but i think it sends a subconscious message to girls that they should be goldiggers because that's what's "cool" and "sexy," instead of having their own ambitions/lives and relying on themselves.

  • Mrs_FoodLover@xanga

People take shit way too seriously now days. & Why the hell would they be selling thongs to little girls? Come on now. Get your information straight.
