Take It From A Dude: Leggings As Pants
Ladies, we need to talk. It's getting chilly. I'm sure you're starting to feel shivers run through your bones. Maybe some of you even cracked open those winter wardrobes already. More power to y'all for it -- nothing beats bundling up on a frosty day. But for all that's right and just and sausaged-cased in the world, you gotta stop trying to pass off leggings as pants.
Would it be kosher for a guy to step outside in pajamas? Lounge around a coffee shop in a pair of long underwear? Go for a jog in Under Armor?
(OK, some of us do that last one. Moving on!)
Far be it from me to lecture about how to stay warm and cozy this winter -- I won't even pretend to know how uncomfortable most of your get-ups must be -- but these pants pretenders are a reach too far to keep quiet. It's not just lazy, it's unoriginal.
I mean, from an oafish "gawking at pretty girls" point of view, leggings are a great for me and other guys. It keeps you ladies warm, it gives us something to distract us from sub-freezing temperatures and everybody comes out smiling. But -- and I can't emphasize this enough -- us y-chromosomed ones are a bunch of goddamned idiots. If you're looking to grab our attention by looking good, there's other ways to do it than by pretending spandex is a reasonable alternative to denim.
So, do yourself a favor and think twice before pulling on those leggings this winter. Please. For your own sake.
And yoga pants? Consider yourself on notice.

I hate when I see people wearing PJs out in public.
I'll admit I'm not exactly fashion-savvy, but for crying out loud I don't go out wearing pajamas and slippers like so many people do!
I don't know if I agree that leggings shouldn't be worn as pants-- they do look good!
(But.. crap, I am the guy that just likes looking at the girls wearing them! So I'm Exhibit A lol)
I agree. I like looking at the girls wearing them as much as the next guy, but they aren't real pants. That's why we like looking at them; they're like a warmer version of pantyhose (at least, I'm assuming they're warmer).

Oh for God's sake, get over it. I'm not sure why so many people are butt hurt over women in leggings. If your ass is showing, it's probably not a great idea, but is it really PSA worthy? People look like crap in all kinds of clothing and I see no point in caring. What they wear does not affect YOU. Bury the goddamn horse; we've beaten it enough.
I wear them with long shirts that go past my butt, not regular shirts. But I have a really nice ass, so I don't think many would complain if I did wear them with regular shirts.

You don't want to see panties through too-tight leggings, and no one wants to see a camel toe. We get it. You've said your piece now move along.
@chicbananas@xanga - maybe it IS PSA worthy. I have seen so many bitches with their asses showing...FAT ASSES, and I'm sorry, but it does hurt me. On the inside. And it hurts my eyes! Obviously, no one told them they were doing a very very bad thing, so I think someone has to, even if it's been said 1 million times before.

Personally, I think leggings as pants are kind of dumb (unless you're wearing them under a long shirt or dress, but then they're not really acting as pants, so...), but I'm not the one wearing them, so whatever floats ya boats ladies.
I wear my clothes for myself, not to appeal to nameless men on the street.
leggings should not be worn as pants.. it's extremely unflattering and kinda sleazy in my opinion. i also will bitch my face off when i see people wearing pajamas at a fucking mall or restaurant.. it takes about 1 minute to put a pair of jeans on, it ain't that hard.
Well I never wear leggings as pants but if other girls want to then I don't care. If you're gonna complain about fashion faux-pas then why don't you talk about guys wearing their pants below their butts so you just see their underwear? Now I personally think that's much worse than leggings.

I agree with this post. Mostly becuase leggings ARE NOT PANTS! They are meant to be worn under dresses and skirts for a style. I'm so sick of seeing camel toes around my school becuase girls...just...don't know how to dress themselves sometimes..apparently....and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD if you are a plus size woman, these look even worse as pants! This is coming from a plus size girl herself.
To quote Julia Roberts as Erin Brockovich, "As long as I have one ass instead of two, I'll wear what I like." I don't see why we all shouldn't be entitled to this same mentality.
While leggings shouldn't be warn as pants, many of my pairs of leggings ARE actually warmer than jeans! A friend the other day just told me of a store that sells gorgeous leggings that are actually fleece on the inside (she was wearing a pair, they were adorable, it was 20 degrees outside and snowing - in the northern area of Arizona where we flip out when this happens - and she was warm). So leggings CAN be warmer than pants, but you should still wear a skirt or shorts over it.
I myself, because I just moved up to this northern region in the past year and I'm not used to the cold, I wear leggings UNDER my jeans to stay warm. I usually wear one pair of leggings over 2 pairs of socks (one pair which comes up to my knees, and a pair of jeans. Then I'm snug ;).

So your opinion is irrelevant.leggings shouldn't be worn as only pants - with a dress, skirt, or a long sweater, sweatshirt, shirt in general - as long as it's covering the butt that's okay. but what i hate is hearing girls complain about how cold they are when they're wearing boots, winter coat, gloves, scarves.... and leggings as pants. UH HELLO?!?! i freeze even when i have a ton of layers on - if you're thinking leggings alone will keep you warm enough in the winter (if you're in the area) when there is snow or ice on the ground, you're nuts!
So...leggings are like sweatpants, lazy and original.
I don't wear them as stand alone pants most of the time but I do love leggings. Also there are kinds of leggings that aren't spandex-tight. Overall, nothing I wear in a Minnesota winter keeps me warm so I don't see the difference.
