However, skin color does tend to change depending on external and personal factors, so you can also try to match your right shade by using your eyes.

For light brown, hazel, or green eyes: Try an orange-red lipstick since it brings out the brown-toned specks. (Stila's "Charlotte")
For blue eyes: Swipe on a fiery bright red lipstick to play up the coolness of blue eyes. (Maybelline's "Red Revival")
For dark brown eyes: Berry-red lipstick accentuates the mahogany and purple tones. (Clarin's "Joli Rouge"
Remember to use lip liner on the inside of your lips since the color tends to fade out. You could also put lip liner as the first coat by itself and lipstick over it for lasting wear or use the blotting method.
Since your lips will be the main focus keep your eyes simple with neutral shadows or doing the classic cat-eye look.
What shades/brands do you prefer when it comes to red lips?

I searched for my red for years. I am fair with green eyes but undertones of blue are too much for me and I can not wear them. I was always told to just settle for pinks instead but they are not me! Revlon's "Cha Cha Cherry" is perfect for me, I am so thrilled to have discovered it. It is a lovely, orange-y shade. I suggest that blondies give it a try.
i've always wanted to pull off a red lip but i had no clue on how to pick a shade that didn't look absolutely hideous . i'll try your tips and see if they work!
I can't find my "red". My skin is so pale I'm better with cool/blue based tones, but I have black hair and brown eyes, so it's just, I don't know how to pick a red :S
I love reds!!! I have that red revival one. I also have a few different reds. love love love them!
Fair people can have warm tones, too; making the suggestion of a blue-toned lipstick bad advice, if you have warm skin. As a strawberry blonde with green eyes I definitely have warm toned skin!
Fair redheads with warm tones, choose one that is brick toned and apply lightly. Look for clue words like "brick" and "terracotta." I use Elf's "Rustic Brick" and L'Oreals "Sunset Red" and when applied lightly they are completely wearable. I even love mixing a little of those two colors together and blotting. I also have shades from Just For Redheads but I wanted to give drugstore options, too.
I wear any colour I like..
Hahaha, I looked at the blue eyes suggestions and laughed as Maybelline's "Red Revival" is the red colour I use now! So good suggestions - I love it, at least! :D
Honestly, I swear I can pull off any lip colour. I think my skin tone is ambiguous enough that it's not really either warm or cool. Orange, berry, red, burgundy, and purple colours all honestly look good on me (and I'm really tough on myself)!
@iamdriftwood@xanga - I'm going to try that one, I too am fair skinned and green eyed and have the same problem with the blue based reds. Thanks girrrl!
@missmerlot@xanga - I am excited for you because it is FAB. Good luck!
I have green eyes, which normally sounds like a "warm" color, but I also have ashy "dishwater" blond hair, so I don't know what kind of red to choose. But I definitely am going to do red lipstick for Halloween, so this is kind of a problem for me. :/
I have no clue as to what category my skin tone falls under... and I have no clue if I have a warm or cool complexion. Even my eyes are undefined... they're a mix of hazel and olive green.
If anyone can help me define my skin tone, please help D:
Or if someone could write an article about this, even better!
I can completely agree with Russian Red for me by Mac! I love love love this color!
@blackspiders@xanga - @not3000@xanga - If you have a favorite makeup counter in the mall, go and ask for help. Just tell them you want a red that actually works. Have them put it on you, walk around the mall for a bit, then decide if it's right for you. I did that with Mac's Russian Red and I was floored by how perfect it was!
@not3000@xanga - Here are a few tests you could do. If your veins are blue, cool. Green, warm. Silver jewelry, cool. Gold, warm. White clothing, cool. Ivory, warm. Black clothing, cool. Brown, warm. Jewel toned clothing, cool. Earth tones, warm. These aren't really cut and defined though. I have blue veins and pink cheeks but I'm definitely warm toned.
@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - Yes, I agree. Sometimes you just have to try stuff out. But, I think the "tests" are at least good to get people thinking. Like I said, I just assumed I was cool toned because I was fair and I have many indications that I would be, but I am definitely warm toned.
For a second, I thought this was going to mention Michelle Phan's video on how to pick a red lipstick (see it on youtube), which has alternative ways to tell that I thought were helpful.
I personally don't think many people can pull it off.
I'm fair with neutral skin, and Russian Red is great for me.
@Murphy_Rants@xanga - Ooh, I've always wanted to try the Just for Redheads makeup. But I'm color blind and am terrified of purchasing makeup out of a store.
I have fair skin w/hazel eyes and I found a red by neutrogena that I LOVE...and of course because I love it, they discontinued it. Anyway, I still have my stick and here's what it looks like:

Favorite thing to pair this with in fall is a light grey shadow and some black gel liner.
My absolute favorite red lipsticks are made by Red Apple. Second to none. I Especially love the lip gloss. Red lips are so much fun and I AM SO HAPPY it's the 'in' color this season!
