8 Must Know Tips for Walking in High Heels
We love them. We hate them. We won't ever stop wearing them.
Heels are the staple of every woman's wardrobe that she loves to hate. There are pros and cons to wearing heels: they make your legs and butt look great, but at the same time they hurt your feet, you stumble more often, and you almost always end the night with blisters on top of blisters.
We all weigh these pros and cons on a daily basis, trying to decide if it's worth it to where the heels. In the end, most of us usually cave, suck it up, and go with the "beauty is pain" mantra. Here are a few tips so you can rock your four inch (and higher) heels whenever you want without worrying about whether or not you'll survive the day.
1. Test drive the heels before the big day.
Yes, this sounds obvious, but I still usually forget to do it. Go out on a simple errand and wear your heels. Make sure your comfortable in them while walking around the store for awhile to ensure that you'll be fine when it's time to wear them for real.
2. Sign up for yoga.
Taking yoga will make you more aware of your core muscles and will help you balance in your shoes. Plus, it's a great workout.
3. Sit down every 20 minutes or so.
I know it's tough taking a break when you're having a good time, but this is a must when wearing high heels. It will take pressure off your toes for a little while and will ultimately allow you to last longer on the dance floor. Another great part about sitting down, is it's often easier to show off your new shoes when your sitting with your legs crossed. If you're trying to use your shoes to make a fashion statement, then you need to make sure people notice.
4. Customize and cushion your shoes.
Walk around your room breaking them in for a couple of hours. Figure out if you need to buy cushions to protect your feet. You're mostly supposed to feel the pressure from your shoes on the balls of your feet. If your feet are in pain or rub somewhere else, cushion them with Dr. Scholl's or other similar products. You might look ridiculous in your pajamas and heels, but it's not like anyone will see you, right?
5. Stand straight.
Straighten and extend your leg with every step. This will make you look graceful and elegant, and avoid stomping around in an uncoordinated matter.
6. Slice the bottom of your shoes.
I know you just spent money on these shoes and don't want to mark them up, but this is necessary. Either buy grippy steps, sandpaper the bottoms of your shoes, or scuff them up on the driveway to prevent slipping and sliding on smooth floors.
7. Focus on your core.
Close your eyes and figure out where your weight falls when you're wearing heels. Slowly open your eyes and take your first steps while still focusing on your core, allowing your body to adjust and use the muscles necessary to help you balance.
8. Be confident.
Own those shoes. Don't think about slipping or else you will. You look beautiful and you should walk like you know it.
These tips are a great way to prevent stumbling around like an uncoordinated baby elephant (which I have actually been compared to before). Beauty doesn't always have to be pain and we should be able to look great while feeling great too.

I love heels. I NEED to learn how to walk in them without looking like a doofus.
when you're buying them, try them on at the store and if it's not comfortable when you test it out, it's not going to be comfortable later either.
The one time I tried wearing heels was the one time my choir director decided we were going to stand the whole rehearsal...Ouch...
I always wear heels... it's just a matter of actually practicing. Like with many other things, knowing the theory is not all you need to actually put it into practice.
Now let's just wait for the people who will say that heels are stupid and those who will agree with me and say that you, being an english and journalism major, should proofread your articles a little more thoroughly.
High heels and I don't really get along these days. If I'm going to wear heels, they have to be wedges, and no more than 2 1/2 inches high. I just can't juggle a 2 yr old, a 4 yr old and a giant bag of all their things wearing heels! One day I'll get back to heels, though.

Every night that I work I see women dressed in the sexiest dresses, face all painted, and hair done. I would love to go oooh and ahhh at their efforts but it is ruined when they're walking as if the ground is sinking under them while in a rough terrain.
Kinda ruins the whole effort of looking sexy when their walk knocks that sexiness down to nonexistant.
I love heels but the pain is unbearable! I need to find some super cushioning!
Buy well-made shoes that fit properly. Squeezing into too-small or slipping around in too-large shoes will only make it more difficult to wear. Someone told me to rub stick deodorant in places that rub on your feet to prevent blisters but I haven't tried that yet.
My shoe size is bigger and so is my weight (size 11-13 shoe and 250 lbs) and so I find that heels designed for drag queens really support my foot well. Say what you want about gay people/rights, they wear some damn comfortable heels.
@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - I did not mean it to be condescending whatsoever... the thing is, I do expect a future professional writer to differentiate between "where" and "were" as well as between "you're" and "your". Even though everyone has a specific way of writing (so that grammar becomes "personal" in each writer's style), those are very basic things that should not be ignored.

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - I suppose I just think that way because when you learn English as a second language, those are some of the errors that teachers look for the most. So avoiding them at all costs become pretty much necessary. As you will, I too will still stick to what I said.
One of the stylists that I once worked with always told me to walk heel-toe heel-toe. Very good advice!

I wish I could wear heels. 2" is occasionally manageable if I don't have to stand for a long time, 3" is excruciating, and anything above that is practically impossible. I tried on some super nice 5" heels at the mall a few weeks ago and I literally couldn't even stand up straight in them. :(

I'd like to wear heels some day but I feel like I'd have to find ones specific to my foot, which I know will mean $$$. I have extremely high arches and I've tried to love heels but it seems they don't like me. I can actually walk in them pretty well but they are extremely painful. I'll try inserts before giving up on them but otherwise I'll have to invest in at least one pair of well-made black/brown pumps some day.
Flats are great, comfy, and cute but I love how powerful and authoritative I feel in heels. I have a well made pair of high heel black leather boots fitted to my arch AND my calf (muscle) and I dominated every where I go when I wear them. I felt so bad ass.
Buy well made shoes. Cheap hells are a no go.
I honestly had never thought about cutting up the bottoms of the shoes for traction....durrrr, good idea! I'm going to do that to mine. Whenever I walk in heels I have to remember to keep my chin up and stay balanced because I'm already 5'11" without them so sometimes I get a little self-conscious until I remind myself to OWN IT :D
Also, if you are already a tall girl and are wearing 5-inchers and going to play pool...make sure you wear pants. I wore a skirt and heels one night to play pool and it was a really freaking bad idea (unless you enjoy awkwardly crouching in attempts not to moon people every time you line up a shot).
Tip 9:
Knowing when to ditch the heels. Nothing is less attractive than a woman stumbling around, exhausted, after a long day rocking them sexy heels.
I just sometimes don't think about my steps, and I will take one step and my ankle will just fail. It's happened a few times... a few embarrassing times. :/
I can't wear heels thanks to my back problems.
