Help! I Can't Curb My Caffeine Addiction
My name is Rae, and I am addicted to Coke.
No, seriously. I don't know, part of me is always messing around when I say this, but I'm actually serious, as well. I started drinking Coke since before I can remember. Well, Pepsi. My father would put it in my bottles, apparently. Classy, I know.
There have been many occasions when Coke/Pepsi have made me physically sick. As in, I have been lying in bed at night with moderate to severe stomach cramps, and I am sure Coke was the cause, because nothing else in my diet is that bad. Or if it is, I don't consume enough of it to have that kind of effect. I have also had various other symptoms of too much Coke/Pepsi/caffeine.
Well, I can't seem to stop drinking it. Isn't that at the heart of what addiction is? I have tried to quit many times. Once, I stopped drinking it for about eight months, and then someone convinced me to indulge for a birthday party, just one night. And I was right back on it.
Recently, I quit for almost a month. I replaced my Coke with black tea, because I was feeling exhausted from lack of caffeine. And it was great. But I missed the taste of Coke, so I went right back on it.
I would love to quit drinking it, to stop absorbing needless calories, not to mention to stop slowly killing my body, as I'm sure I'm doing with every 80 oz+ that I consume each day.
Lovelies, have you ever had any addictions like this? Do you have any advice on how to overcome it?

How do you find time to drink 80oz of coke?! I'm 'addicted' to coffee and in the height of it I was muuuuch less than that, even.
Easiest solution: ween off it. Start buying the small cans. Drink one a day. Drink on special occasions. Treat yourself to it, don't use it as a crutch.
Google how TERRIBLE drinking any soda is and that will really make you want to quit drinking it cold turkey.
First of all. Reduce. At least reduce to a level where you aren't going to get sick. That is really concerning. Even at the height of what I consider my diet Coke addiction I'd have three cans so you at least are double of what I did.
I started with having two cans. I got used to that. Before I knew it I was fine with two cans and if I went for my third I actually found it quite appealing and would dump it. After that, I started going to one can right in the morning (caffeine headaches are a bitch). Soon, I got used to that and sipping from a second can would be rather unappealing and I'd dump it.
Next, I went to no cans. I only have diet Coke once every few weekends or so if I'm at a restaurant or if my BF and I want a little "cheat" day with a diet soda and a candy. I've gotten to a point where it's an actual treat and not an addiction or a "necessity."
I don't have really have a problem having caffeine in my diet. I'm okay allowing myself some green tea every day. The reason I wanted to stop to soda is because of the artificial sweeteners and the monstrous acidity of it. Yes, I know tea is acidic. But...it's tea...you know?
@suggestivetongue@xanga - I live in at my university, and you can buy a 20oz cup in the student union, and I return to fill it multiple times a day. And also, I refill it in the dining halls.
@aheartofglitter@xanga - Haha, you would think, but I guess addiction overrides logic. =P
@Murphy_Rants@xanga - Tea also has actual health benefits. So even if there are things in it that could be bad, it contributes SOMETHING. Where as Coke/Pepsi contribute nothing to your health.
80oz?! Are you mad? That's so, so bad for you :-/ I couldn't even physically manage to drink that liquid in TOTAL per day, let alone just through soda! Just wean yourself off it - reduce the amount you drink, and don't get refillable drinks so you don't just keep going back for more. Buy cans, then once it's done, it's done and you can't drink more without going out of your way to buy more!
80 ounces of coca cola is 960 calories and 260 grams of sugars, according to myfitnesspal.com. There, that should at least get you to cut down! :D Best of luck!
I think the only day I drank 80oz of mountain dew I had a crazy amount of homework and quizzes to work on...it didn't feel very good that night lol
cokes can be addicting though, i feel your pain! you did manage to quit once, for a time. maybe you should try it that way again!
your stomach cramps could be from the cokes. if quitting cokes does not make you better, it's also possible you have a food allergy to something.
I used to drink a monster everyday, not I'm like, immune to caffeine
