Disney Says No More Princesses
Disney has said that they will not be do any more animated fairy tales movies for some time. This will be breaking a 73-year tradition! Tangled will be the last animated fairy tale movie for a long time.
So, why would they do this? Apparently, the biggest reason is that girls no longer view princesses and getting married to be ideal. Girls are more interested "in being hot, and being cool."
This makes me kind of sad. I love the Disney Princess movies! I wonder what sort of story lines they are going to use now for young girls? It scares me to think about!
What do you think about this drastic change? What's your favorite Disney Princess movie?

GOOD damn it. Let's give girls something else to aspire to besides that.
I think it's time for Disney to try something new, and that's exactly what they're doing
very true 0_o i'm scared... if disney is catering to youth, and youth is interested in "cool and hot" am i going to see the new disney characters going to school at places akin to playboy mansion?? (hyperbole, i'm sure, but i'm still scared >.<)
Who are these supposed girls? My daughter and most of the little girls I know love princesses or have at least gone through a princess phase.
From reading that article it's a little sad to me that little girls at ages 5 and 6 no longer want to be princesses, but "cool and hot"...what is this world coming to.
Although it'll be interesting to see what Disney will come up with, I'll really miss them doing the fairytale movies :(
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Belle is still my awesome favorite! WTF is Disney gonna make now. I hope they dont just make movies to appeal to boys. So many networks made that mistake in the past 10 years & now to attract girls, they make stupid shit.
tangled was hilarious! i loved it actually. beauty and the beast was great but she wasnt a princess. so tangled it is. the songs were short! ialways hated how disney busted out in song. ugh
I much rather be a princess than "hot and cool" though I wasn't into princesses when I was a little girl.
@aN_amAYzInG_storrII@xanga - Did you see what they said though? They didn't say that girls are now more interested "in being independent and having a good education and an awesome career" they are more interested in being "cool" and being "hot." I dunno, I think the hot scares me....at least...marriage, love is a good thing. It seems like now....now....even disney is getting on the "blatantly teaching girls to hate themselves" bandwagon.
They haven't really had any good princess movies since the 90's anyway. Tangled was good, but it was CG so it's not quite the same as the old ones.
Thats sad, I loved watching Disney Princesses. = [
And so what if girls want to be "cool & hot" that should make Disney want to push the issue further of not so much getting married but theres more to life than that.
It's good that they're going to do something new,
I'm pretty sure disney/pixar is smart enough to not make movies with "hot" innapropriate characters for children.
It's sad to see the princesses come to an end though.
*goes and watch Disney princess movie to console myself*
My favorite would be a tie between cinderella, mulan, and tangled.
This kind of makes me sad. I don't view being princessy and married ideal for me, but I still loved the movies and I know there are still many out there that love the ideas behind them!
If they're changing their style to fit "girls being hot and cool" I worry for the future more then ever, ha.
i feel like people my age and older enjoy disney movies more than the kids who they're made for
I hope their new theme will be about aliens or technology.
And my favorite princesses were Ariel and Jasmine.
Sooo.... what? Is Disney going to make movies about the ugly 12 year old girl that starts taking off her clothes and going to crazy parties in order to be cool, only to realize that she only needs her friends and to be herself? Thats for ABC Family to do! C'mon Disney! You're here for the magic!
Wow. :O Well, I think Tangled is the best one to end on.
I think this change is annoying and will cause a drop in how many little girls view the movies.
I love the Disney Princess movies and there's not need to stop making. If you don't agree with them then just don't watch them... it's that simple...
@Semper_medusa@xanga - Sigh. Clearly, this speaks to larger problems in our society.
I love me some Cinderella. Us po' girls have to have something to dream of.
That being said, I would not complain about more strong willed women who don't necessarily get married off at the end of the film. "Cool" and "hot" is a bit worrisome though.
Yes, because we should cater to the sexualization of our youth instead of adamantly fighting it.
“By the time they’re 5 or 6, they’re not interested in being princesses,” said Dafna Lemish, chairman of the Radio and TV Dept. at Southern Illinois University and a self-proclaimed expert in the role of media in children’s lives. “They’re interested in being hot, in being cool. Clearly, they see this is what society values.”
Let me just pick this apart... this is a SELF-PROCLAIMED EXPERT IN THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN CHILDREN'S LIVES? Is this what society values, turning our five and six year old CHILDREN (because that's what they are!) into "hot," "cool" little husks of human beings? This bitch is fucking crazy. She needs to rethink calling herself a fucking expert. I hope to God she has no kids of her own to fuck up with her stupid ass fucking "values" that she's preaching to others. Just because society values something, that doesn't mean it's GOOD for us. Society in America values being super skinny, Photoshopping beyond recognition, tanning, fast food, and on and on and on. None of that is healthy. It is all detrimental to our beings. We should build up the next generation, not break it the fuck down! Again, this bitch is fucking crazy.
... being cool an being hot. let's further perpetuate the low self esteem of america's youth.
boo...i love princesses.
aww!!! :( i grew up watching Disney.
