It was a typical school day. I was sitting in class and not paying attention and instead using StumbleUpon. But it was then that I found a story about a girl who decided to cease using shampoo and conditioner...and since her hair has never looked better!
According to the author, Tracy Hukill on the
Mother Nature Network, shampoo and conditioner both contain a series of chemicals that can do more harm than good to your scalp and hair. What these detergents do is remove from your hair your natural oils and replace them with synthetic oils that can dry your hair out and dull it. So Tracy decided to ditch shampoo and conditioner all together and now claims it was the best decision to make for her hair. Of course it took a couple of weeks for her to get great results, but after a few months, she stated that her hair felt thicker and shinier than ever!
But Tracy did not give up on products entirely and was actually advised to "shampoo" once a week with a sudsless shampoo or conditioner. She also suggests various items that can be found in just about any home to help give hair more body and look shinier - items that lack the bad chemicals found in most soaps, such as laureth sulfate.

(Hair Rules is one brand of chemical-free, Sudsless washing products)
Interested in trying this no shampoo diet for your hair? Give it a wash with one of these items!
-
Baking Soda: Wash only once every few weeks or else it can do damage. Simply mix one teaspoon in a cup of warm water and spread throughout your hair.
-
Beer: When in the shower, pour beer in your hair and then rinse. It can help leave your hair super shiny!
-
Lemon Juice: It can act as a cleanser! It will help leave you with a clean feeling like shampoo does.
-
Olive Oil: Just a small amount rubbed into the ends of your hair can help with the dried feeling dead ends leave. Not too much though or else your hair will feel very oily.
What do you Lovelies think? Would you try this or do you think its kind of crazy? I think I'm actually going to give it a shot...at least that way I'll save some money not buying overpriced hair products!

I'm too used to shampoo and conditioner to give them up, but that's cool. My brother (who has hair about 7" long now maybe) stopped using shampoo but rinses his hair and scalp in the shower... Apparently it works for him but I could never do it.
The beer sounds like an interesting idea, though.
I have heard about this and I am still unsure if I would take the plunge and try ditching my shampoo. My hair gets really gross if I do not shower it every day. Even if I just rinse it with water it looks like I haven't showered in weeks. Not pretty.
No way. Where I live it's usually at least 90 degrees, and dirty hair STINKS.
I use baking soda! Makes my hair just as silky and shiny as conditioner and still gives me that 'squeaky clean' feeling like shampoo does. I brush my hair while it's in, just to make sure it's evenly distributed. I find it's also a great way to make your 'shampoo budget' stretch longer if you are poor!
I stopped using conditioner for about a year now but I still use shampoo, but I can say that not using conditioner has made my hair nicer. And my hair now never falls.
Like the above commenter, rinsing your hair and scalp in the shower is fine, and then just do olive oil treatments every week or so. And hey, before shampoo and conditioner were created, how do you think people washed their hair? I usually give up shampoo and conditioner and use vinegar or baking soda in the summer months, because I feel like the products give me way too much buildup and clarifying shampoo doesn't do much for it.
@mydearparker@xanga - yeah i'm kind of scared to try for the same reasons! but I managed to ditch my straightner and blowdryer and let it dry naturally which i think is a good start lol
I haven't used shampoo on my hair in years and my hair has never been better. It doesn't get damaged and it grows more quickly. Shampoo and conditioner are bad news bears.
@aislynninwonderland - i wish i had time to let my hair dry naturally! i mean i guess i could if i woke up at 3am every morning....
yeah... what about oily hair?
I'm tempted to see what it would do to my hair, but 3 weeks of oily hair is a little unnerving... I don't think I could get past that.
i read that the reason why your hair is so oily is BECAUSE of shampoo and conditioner. It makes up for all the oils you strip out of it by making more. During the transition to no-shampoo routine, you will most likely feel really oily but it will adjust. and from there it will improve.
I have natural hair and this is what some natural women choose to do for the same reasons, so this isn't surprising to me. I still shampoo but only with all natural types
I kinda of what to try this. but at the same time I really love shampoo.. I like the smell... o3o; Hm I may try this one day through. c: sounds interesting.
I had to go without shampoo for a few days one time when I was at an inpatient mental health facility, because it took a few days for them to get my stuff to me. It look absolutely HORRIBLE. >.< So I'm jealous of someone whose hair would look BETTER without shampoo. Even someone whose hair looks AT ALL decent would amaze me. But these days my hair usually look terrible unless it's JUST been washed. I don't know. Using natural products would be something I'd consider, because I've tried a million things to make my hair look better, and nothing so far has worked. But I don't know if that would work...
That's cool and all, but I just don't think I could stand it.. lol
i tried to go shampoo free for like 2 days, i missed the nice shampoo smell on my hair too much so i went back
I use alba organic shampoo & conditioners and wash every other day. I'm still getting used to them (I switched about a week or so ago) and I'm probably still going to use my old shampoo once in a while... even organic shampoo builds up a little bit.
@i_heart_tha_80s@xanga - I take my showers at night and let it dry naturally overnight; it's still slightly damp in the mornings, but no biggie. My hair actually dries funny if I don't do this -- if I let it dry wile awake and not sleeping on it, it'll just frizz instead of curling/waving. You could try something like that lol
HELL NO. MY BEER IS STAYING IN MY FRIDGE.
Wouldn't washing your hair with beer make it smell like... beer? That's pretty gross.
And lemon juice can lighten your hair color. So if you like your hair color the way it is, stay away from lemon juice!
For a while I was using baking soda for cleansing and apple cider vinegar to keep my hair smooth and shiny. My hair looked really flat, though. Plus I couldn't stand the smell of the vinegar.
@MiaJoyTheWriter@xanga - me either
i've used beer before . i don't really shampoo my hair i just condition it every few days and it seems so much healthier !
my friend did this and i was like WHATTT!! i cant believe it actually works. i have dandruff though.. so not only does normal shampoo not work for my hair, i need to buy even MORE expensive shampoo. sigh lol
I wouldn't put any of those on my hair!
