  • 4 Simple DIY Headboards

Headboards are a simple and quick way to not only add personality to your room, but to also pull your space together for a complete and finished look. However, as wonderful as headboards are they often times tend to be expensive, or large and cumbersome (which in a small space like an apartment, or a dorm room, is the last thing you want!). So why not use what supplies you may already have lying around... or make a quick trip out to grab a few extras... and make a headboard yourself! No "real" skills required, and if needed just grab a friend for an extra set of hands... then let your creative side loose and see where the DIY adventure takes you!

Picture Frames: Try hanging either one large picture frame (like the example above) or a collection of smaller frames over your bed. For an eclectic and quirky look you could use frames of all different sizes and arrange them haphazardly. Or for a more sophisticated look you could have a very symmetrical arrangement of equally sized frames. The choices are endless! The frames can be empty, or you can fill them with whatever you want (mirrors, photographs, souvenirs, etc.) to really personalize your space!

Curtains: Why not hang a curtain behind your bed (no window needed!) for a soft and romantic feel. You can alter the height of your headboard simply by hanging your curtain rod either higher or lower on your wall. Or for an even more glamorous effect, why not get creative and extend your curtain up onto the ceiling, creating an almost canopy effect (you will probably need multiple curtain rods and some hooks from the hardware store for this, but I'm pretty sure it will be well worth it).

Paint: Pick whatever colors you like, then go to town painting up a storm! Invest in a couple of different sized brushes and some painters tape, and whatever your imagination can dream up, you can paint it! If painting directly on the wall isn't an option for you, simply grab an inexpensive paintable surface (foam core, plywood, or canvas for example) and paint that instead. Then depending on what material you chose, appropriately attach your new headboard to the wall behind your bed.

Japanese Masking Tape: This tape is all the rage in design blog land, and while I've yet to actually get my hands on some, how much fun could you have making a headboard out of this stuff! There are several different widths, as well as dozens of colors and patterns to choose from! Simply order up a couple of rolls and apply right to your walls for a super quick and trendy headboard. And the joy of this one is it's totally mess free, and it won't damage your walls, plus the only installation required is as easy as ripping of a piece of tape and sticking it to the wall... I'm not sure it gets much easier than that!
