  • Does Your Face Affect Your Personality?

Look at the picture up above, and tilt your head slightly to the right to match the girl's.

If you are like most people you probably see a tiny touch of sadness in those eyes. In that picture I am neither relaxed or emotional, but the way my heavy down turned eyes (even with this great makeup to help balance it) always sends people instant messages about my "moods" that don't even exist.

Since the dawn of my existence I have been pelted with comments like "What's wrong, bad day?" or "You looked tired." Although I have a nice smile in the picture above my mouth normally sits in a small pouty frown, and with those eyes to match it, most people assume that I'm depressed even when absolutely nothing has happened to get me down.

I've had people tell me that my eyes make me look very thoughtful, tired, kind, sad, and from less tactful people...high...

Naturally because of my appearance I tend to attract calm, sad, and lonely people. People tell me I seem empathetic and like to tell me their life stories because they say I seem like I'd be good at listening to them.

So you may be wondering what I am really like under the heavy eyes. Shocking, or not, I am a sad, thoughtful, empathetic person...but is that because that is just naturally me, or is that because that's how everyone has expected me to be because of my appearance, and I was just raised believing I was a certain way?

Does you're face tell story? Do people judge you before even knowing you just by your natural facial expression? Do you think it affects your personality?

Eh. People naturally ask me "Are you tired?" "What's wrong?" "You look upset" when I walk into a room. I guess it's because I don't like talk or smile alot, and I have semi-dark circles xD.

  • world_behind_my_wall@xanga

omg! I have the same problem.  My eyebrows are downturned and so are my lips-pouty.  My friends always ask me if I am upset, that I look like I am going to cry.  Thank the lord I am not alone on this one lol  But honestly I kind off agree, after a while of people telling you that you look upset, you start to believe it.

  • StylishMudd@xanga

she looks high. but yeah, i think you can tell a lot about a person just by looking at them

  • xrandom_enigmaxx@xanga

everyone always if i'm angry when i'm thinking. i guess the way my eyebrows shift when i'm lost in thought gives off the angry vibe.

  • ChelseaSmilesMore@xanga

I have naturally downturned lips, and I get the exact same deal.
    ugh!

  • ChevalierSeingal@datingish

It helps get me laid. Are we bored tonight??? LMAO!

  • arenasa@xanga

My eyes are big and my lips turn up when my face shows no emotion. I look very happy, all of the time, and I am a happy person. I wonder if there is something to this...

  • B2yan_C@xanga

LOL I s'pose I'm one of the "less tactful" people then. The picture does make you look high! I think it's just because your eyes look so chill and mellowed out along with your great smile. :]

  • Mischiefwars@xanga

I can't see the sadness but yeah, you look more happily wasted than anything, to me at least.

I think my face affects me as a person cos people say I always look angry or pissed off when I'm not smiling. Sometimes I am, sometimes I just want people to go away and it's good when they do.

  • phan__tom@xanga

I have the same exact problem.
Down turned, pouty lips= frowning, even if you're just stoic or calm.
It sucks if you're pretty too because people tend to think you're a  bitch even if you're not...you must have the same problem.

  • StarlitGoodbyes@xanga

my eyes turn down... people say they look sad..

  • JessxMaxine@xanga

idk. i suppose only me and my family notice that my left eye is kind of doopy. :/ but no one outside of them as pointed it out.

    xo

I have a pouty mouth and small eyes. People say I look angry/sad/about to cry/about to kill someone. I'm generally zany and bubbly though. Maybe it's overcompensation because I smile to let people know I'm not in a hellish mood. When I smile, I don't have stoic pouty lips.

  • wachamakulit@xanga

i mean i get self concious because i think my face is too long or my teeth is too yellow but thats about it but i can see ur point

  • xraindropsonroses@xanga

My lips are pretty much turned upwards, but sometimes my eyes tend to look sad.. It's kind of annoying because it looks like I am going through 2 different emotions.

  • MochaSprinkle@xanga

Yeah it does and it sucks. I have hereditary dark circles under my eyes. If I've gotten 12 hours or 4 hours of sleep, I look the same and I hate it. It's impractical to think that I'm going to wear makeup every day, I just can't.

  • Jamie_Nip@xanga

holy crap, story of my life. my mouth is naturally turned down and the running joke with my friends is, "jamie, are you ok?" Thanks for the pout, dad. :p

my dark hair and pale skin don't help either! haha...but I'm generally pretty content. Not bubbly or anything, but pretty happy with my life. my face usually doesn't reflect that though haha

  • THiiNSPiiR3_M3@xanga

My first year of college basically everyone smoked weed and got high everyday. I didn't. Yet my teachers always asked ME if i was high :/

Plus people say i always look sad.And ill.

I think your face does tell a lot about you and might affect your personality (I.E. I would not be surprised if sometimes you felt sad because of all the people you listened to.) I know that I have a very neutral face so when I'm happy you can tell and when I'm sad you can tell. However I do get the "you look stoned" comment, because of my large pupils (a stupid eye issue, which is why I am legally blind without my glasses), but as a famous person once said, "don't judge a book by it's cover." :]

    Well written, Ma'am!

  • sararific@xanga

People often ask me if I'm sad or depressed, and it's because my eyelids heavily hood my eyes (well not like HEAVILY) but enough to seem like I'm sneering or glaring at someone. Plus I don't smile a lot either. I'm really sick of people asking me "why the long face?" when that's just my "default face" (term my cousin coined haha). I do, however, think I have long term depression (for about four years now? i haven't gone to the doctor for it though - too scared to tell my parents), so maybe your face does affect your personality, or rather, your personality affects your face?

  • katelyn

I get asked these questions all the time.  It's aggravating when they say, "you need to smile more, you look so sad."  but I'm not.  Maybe I'm busy at the moment or I'm concentrating on something, but just because I'm not walking around smiling looking like a psycho doesn't mean I'm sad or depressed.

Thanks for writing this.  I honestly thought I was the only one that got this too...

  • FallenReign@xanga

I naturally have a small, pouty, downturned mouth. And my eyes are really dark, and when I don't know many people I have a tendency just to observe what's going on in the room. So I'm often asked what's wrong, are you okay, just things like that. And then I can just sit there and listen to people talk without much interruption, so sometimes people just pour their hearts out to me without even realizing. It's kinda strange but oh well.

  • iGoRAWRRx3

My eyes are pretty small, so in my relaxed facial expression, I look like I'm angry or glaring at someone. But I smile a lot, and people can easily make me smile/laugh (if I'm not in a bad mood).

  • Peppermint__Kisses@xanga

hmm me too! if im just walking along, feeling 'neutral', like just off in my own world or whatever...ppl ask me what's wrong! lol. Your picture isnt loading which is annoying>:/ but i have downturned eyes and i suppose my lips are pouty. they're downturend anyway. I've tried to adopt making my mouth slightly smile when i realise i may be 'glaring' at nothing, in hopes i get more smile wrinkles than the other kind in the future.

lol im so weird:P but im generally a really happy, positive person:) Its just if im on a bus or walking along by myself that i get that 'look'. Interesting theory though:)

...i just remembered..when i'm at work (and i dont really like one of my jobs) people say that what they like about me is im always smiling:) but thats prob cos its my job, and i like to give good customer service:P

  • thebeautyofwinter@xanga

    that happens to me sometimes.

That's why I make sure to come off as friendly and energetic, and drink coffee.
