  • What's Going Wrong with the Modeling Industry?

After reading about the South Korean supermodel, Daul Kim's suicide last week, I cannot help but think there is more that can be done to help models in the industry.

Daul was found by her boyfriend in Paris last week. Being discovered in 2007, she went on to model for the likes of Chanel, Dries van Noten and Alexander McQueen as well as being a regular on the catwalks in the major fashion capitals. Daul's blog 'Iliketoforkmyself' hinted at depression but no action appears to have been taken from those around her.

What do you think could be done to help models like Daul, when under pressure is the modeling industry?

Hmm. . . How about maybe being OK with models 1) eating and 2) digesting when they eat (i.e.- no bulimia)? Or how about making sample sizes bigger than a size 2?

Or how about people stop being so darn shallow in saying that couture HAS to be thinner than a poor starving kid in Africa?

oh snap a friend of mine recently blogged about this.

i think it's more about culture- an acceptable answer to failure is suicide. instead of being viewed as sinful, some asian countries (i'm thinking japan, but s.korea may be jumping on the bandwagon) believe that suicide is honorable.

then again, i'm not totally clear about the circumstances of daul's death, so maybe there were other reasons. D:

Tons of people kill themselves, this is nothing special. People are under pressure in many other situations. This post is annoying, she chose her career, and she could have quit if it was too much for her.

  • MoonFaeEyryan@xanga

I don't think this has to do much with the modeling industry. Suicide is fairly common. I'm sure every job out there has its fair number of suicides.

  • LouLouLouie@xanga

There are plenty of people with depression who kill themselves.
Just because she was in the limelight doesn't make it outstanding. Its important to remember that correlation does not equal causation. Just because she was depressed and a model doesn't mean that she was depressed because she was a model.

well besides the usual eating good stuff i will say that maybe the agency should look after their models too, depressed people in a world like that is pretty much suicide, too much presure you dont need, if the noticed is too bad from them that didnt help her.

life is hard. some people just can't deal. millions of average janes and joes commit suicide everyday, and they get little or no mention. depression and suicidal ideation aren't just occurrences in the modeling industry, so i'm not sure how much that had to do with it.

but yeah, i suppose the industry is a bit fucked. many models can't deal with it, and it's up to them to decided when to walk away. no one said being a catwalker was easy.

"Daul's blog 'Iliketoforkmyself' hinted at depression but no action appears to have been taken from those around her."
Look here. There was NO SOLID HINT OF DEPRESSION. No one wouldn't suspect it, so of course there were no action taken from those around her. What are you saying, seriously? The last entry "forever" could mean anything.

I agree with the others that said, the models play a part in it as well.  We don't know enough about this model to know that the modeling industry drove her to commit suicide.  Even if it was one of her reasons, it was still her choice to do it (as it is with every other person that commits suicide).  She could have walked away, found a support system that would listen to her etc.  Instead she opted to commit suicide.

@PerkyPunk8064@xanga - Wow you are sound so shallow. Depression doesn't just happen to skinny people. you could at least show some remorse. i highly doubt her being skinny led to her suicide there were probably more reasons.

  • XoAsianBabioX@xanga

idk if its essentially just models. skorea has had a lot of celebrities, actors, actresses, etc, suicide recently.

  • cherrypopstar@xanga

I was just thinking what the above posters said.

Many people commit suicide. One of them might be models. However, if there were many more suicides in models than in other careers, then we might start saying.. "what needs to change in modelling?".

I group of ppl with the highest suicide rate is... ppl over 65 ? and teens.

@cornyonacob@xanga - south korea actually used to have this custom (not sure if it's really practiced anymore... i'm pretty sure it's not D:) that if a girl got deflowered before her marriage--even if it was by rape--she had to commit suicide. :/ oh, collectivist nations...

    daul sure is a loss.

@inthemillions@xanga, that's just sad. do you hold no value in individual life, or is it merely people like Daul? are you the cynical reductionist that has deemed humans dispensable? it's cool if you are; i kinda think the same way. but i still think it's a tragedy when somebody takes their own life. it's true she agreed to that path, but i don't think her intention was to put herself under everybody's pressure and demands--rather, she just wanted to model. call it naive or ignorant on her part, but it's completely different from her side of the story, i'm sure. it's easy for us to condemn and judge; we're not her.

depression could be linked to diet disorders, but is she anorexic?

  • OctoberSkyee@xanga

Millions of people have depression for a million different reasons. Millions of people are under stress because of their job. Millions of people off themselves. Why is she special?

  • sweet__simplicity__08@xanga

@PerkyPunk8064@xanga - Her death was not down to an eating disorder.

  • sweet__simplicity__08@xanga

@BlehhItsTu@xanga - I don't think she was, I think she was just unhappy and lonely.

  • Athlyx@xanga

    @OctoberSkyee@xanga - Because she was a celebrity?

  • OctoberSkyee@xanga
  • Athlyx@xanga

    @OctoberSkyee@xanga - No, they're rich and famous. =]

  • PerkyPunk8064@xanga

@goalsforjanuary@xanga - Wow did you read the whole post? The final question was: "What do you think could be done to help models like Daul, when under pressure is the modeling industry?"

I answered the question. And believe me, I've had 2 friends commit suicide and one of them wasn't skinny. I think I'm well aware that suicide can happen to anyone anywhere.
I DO feel for her family and for the crap she was going through to make her do this. But don't go jumping all over my back calling me shallow when you didn't even stop to read if maybe I was posting a response to the question.
  • Keeping__Karma@xanga

That's sad.  If she hinted at depression and I was a friend of hers I would've told someone.  If they've mentioned it, they're seriously thinking about it, and that's enough to worry.

  • hamu_mato@xanga

she looks like a skeleton! scary!

  • Keeko1@xanga

    It's probably pressure.
