  • Is Makeup a Mask?

Is make up a mask to cover up our natural beauty? Or is a magic that cover up our imperfections? Cosmetic is endlessly growing rather is at Drug store or at department store. Additionally, cosmetic industries make billions and billions of dollars each year.

There are people out there who think makeup is an unnecessary part of women's live and it is just a mask to cover up women’s true beauty. They think women should embrace what God gave them instead covering up in layers and layers of makeup.  In fact they think is a sin because it is against god’s will (I thought this was kinda funny but they do think it is true).

From my perspective, I don't think there is anything wrong with makeup. Because all humans are not perfect and every now and then they need a little boost to make them prettier or more comfortable in their own skin.   I had been wearing makeup since the age of 15 daily to school or hangouts.  WHY? I am not going too lie, it was an advertisement that got my attention and made me wanted to wear makeup when I was little. Advertisements that offer longer lashes and instantly flawless skin are kind of hard to resist. However, I know that while makeup makes me pretty, it doesn’t make me beautiful and the true beauty comes within.

What do you ladies (and guys) think:  Is makeup a mask? Or a magic that cover up imperfections?

makeup isn't a mask, it's an enhancer (when done correctly).

i wear makeup because i love to play with it and honestly, i do think i look better with it on. it's not my security blanket, and i don't need it to go out, as no one should. but i think it's time women who wore makeup stopped being criticized for it.

I think make up should be used to enhance features.  Sometimes it can get overboard and it DOES look like a mask.  I'm not going to lie... I make fun of people like that.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy experimenting with cosmetics and I wear them daily - but too much looks tacky.

Can someone fix up the typos and obvious grammatical mistakes?

Back to the question: I think it depends on how much you put on, but makeup should not be used to mask yourself completely.

i use it for fun, like to take pics of myself with them on when i'm bored (like this profile pic).  i hardly wear any daily, sometimes none at all. i didn't start wearing make-up until i graduated college.

my wedding day i wore lip gloss and clear mascara. oh and moisturizer. that was it. no foundation, no powder.

i do make a mental note when i see someone with lots on.  it's ok when you're going to a party but if like you're at the grocery store? or in the gym. yikes.

Who gives a shit - if you like it, wear it. If not, don't.

People think it is beautiful because we are socialized to think that way and socialized to believe what constitutes an imperfection and doesn't.

If you think you only look good in makeup - congrats. You're either really ugly or easily brainwashed.

i don't think there's anything wrong with it. some people do take it a bit too far, but to each their own. we live in a superficial society, and it doesn't hurt to have something that may give us a bit of a confidence boost.

I don't think makeup is a mask either -- however, you'd want to avoid wearing makeup every single day. I only wear makeup if I am working that day (though thankfully I am only working part-time as I'm a student) and I don't wear it to school because I'm just.. lazy and don't feel like trying to impress anyone. Give your skin a break some relaxed days and just put on some moisterizer :D I'm sure you without makeup looks pretty enough. It's cool when a girl just puts on some concealer and chapstick; you can hardly tell she's wearing makeup, and she's only putting it on for concealing her dark circles or something.

@niez_cho@xanga - YES, i agree. wtf is up with this post? doesn't lovelyish edit anything?!

wth is "Or is a magic that cover up our imperfections? Cosmetic is endlessly growing rather is at Drug store or at department store."...HUH? this is by far the most annoying post i've ever read, and this subject has already been posted about before.

"I had been wearing makeup since the age of 15 daily to school or hangouts. WHY? I am not going too lie, it was an advertisement that got my attention and made me wanted to wear makeup when I was little." - sorry, what were you not going to lie about? this doesn't make any effing sense at all. way to piss off an English Major.

It's your face in a bag.

  • WhenHateIsTheOnlyOption@xanga

I knew a girl who plastered on so much foundation that she looked like a mask. Her face was pale white wihile the rest of her was a tan like color. It looks tacky.

  • cottonswabs@xanga

I think make up is not a mask but rather, it is a way to express yourself. If you see yourself beautiful, why not exaggerating it with makeup? I like makeup, to me, it's more like a kind of art than a mask covering up the true you. I do put on makeup in special occasions, but I seldom put on makeup daily or in usual events.

  • voraciousconsumption@xanga

I agree with first two comments... it's supposed to enhance a girl's already existing beauty. :)

@dearFLOPPY@xanga - and you are the reason why i don't want to major in english anymore and why my history teacher opted out of her major after she got her teaching degree. freaking arrogant bint. lay off the blogger.

i was one of those girls who would go around telling people not to wear make-up because it was a front. i still don't wear make-up most of time, but i agree with the first two comments.

i do want to add though that this 'security blanket' of make-up is kind of scary to me. the world's become dependent on these little comforts and i've kind of always envisioned the women of the world to be stronger than that.

"I have heard of your paintings too, well enough. God hath given you one face and you paint yourself another."

    -Hamlet
...that's the melancholy Dane's two cents, anyway.
  • Abrilsuka@xanga

i think it all depents on you, i really LOVE make up, actually im trying to get in to a proper make up teaching and maybe after that i can make money becoming a make up artis or something, i actually get lots of make up but i spend the day with my super heavy make up at home, and for going out i just get eye liner and mascara.

The only time when i use my make up as a mask is when im feeling ashame of something and ill have a visitor or i have to go out, i dont want to people look at my mood swings, but its really rare when that happens, the make up is pretty much a thing for me, and i know how to make my eyes great with eye liner and a proper marscara. i dont use it to impress or pretend.

  • dearFLOPPY@xanga

@xsPoNgEs_go_SQUISHx13@xanga - you must be mistaken. it IS the lovelyish editor's JOB to edit posts before they are posted, so simple mistakes like that don't appear. and no, im not the reason why you didn't major in english. don't pin your inadequacy on me :)

  • moon_on_a_string@xanga

i see makeup as an art form; the face is just another kind of canvas.

  • untainted_love_for_her@xanga

It can be a mask, but usually it's not. Generally makeup is just a little touching up, like lighting a stage so that sometimes the main actors are in the spotlight and sometimes the whole stage is lit.

  • SamiiSaysHaii@xanga
  • brassmonkeyoriginals

Makeup can be whatever you want it to be.  A way to enhance natural attributes or a way to hide what you really look like.  It's a fun way to experiment with different looks without having to go under the knife.

  • Imp_is_lurking@xanga

It obviously depends how you use it.

  • Manstration@xanga

If you only look good while wearing make up, and are unable to go without it then yes, it is a mask.
