  • Why Don't Stores Carry Plus Size Clothing?

I like how the issue of being "plus size" is a new trending topic. Well...I have something to add on to that. For instance when you go into really popular stores (I won't mention any names :cough: Aeropostale, American Eagle, Urban Outfitters :cough:), you can't find plus size clothing.

Everyone women has to be a size 12 or smaller to fit into the jeans there. Now, I cant speak for the men on this part, but I'm sure the same issue goes for them. When I go inside the store for other things inside there, they make me feel even more fat. I'm not that sensitive, but if you ask them if they carry this certain size then they say "you have to go online to buy that size." Why is it so hard to carry plus size clothing? There are more plus size women than skinny women, so why don't you carry what will probably make you more money? Instead they make you feel like you're so rare that we have to sell your size online. It just seems really ridiculous to me.

What do you think of it?

Umm, it could just be the American Eagle where I live, but they do carry plus-size clothing. Just throwing that one out there.

I do agree with your sentiment though. :)

  • sarahb_86@xanga

Also, I would rather be rare and "unique", to a point, instead of being being the same and boring. :)

  • frozencherries@xanga

Ive seen plus size clothing at AE. + Their sizes run reeeally big.
& If you can't find it in the store, try online.

@sarahb_86@xanga - wow...yea where i live those stored dont even try to carry plussize clothing, but thanx for your responce

  • MangoWOW@xanga

Because it would make us feel pretty.

Also, once fat people start wearing it it goes out of style.

  • couturelovely@xanga

I think that, since women who are above a size twelve would be overweight it would be irresponsible of these stores to carry those sizes... If you have to go out of your way to buy clothing it would make you think more about your size and maybe motivate you to slim down to a size which is healthy...

  • dearFLOPPY@xanga

because in order to stock plus size items, they have to carry less of other more "regular" sizes. not everyone is a plus size, and most people fall into 0-12 for women, and...i don't know about men sizes. but mostly if you're plus size, you have to buy from specialty stores. they have a wider selection for you anyhow.

I never understood that myself. It certainly can't be too difficult to carry the clothes in store.

  • frozencherries@xanga

@MangoWOW@xanga - wow, once fat people start wearing it it goes out of style? really now. that's pretty cruel. many "plus size" people are friggin gorgeous and fashionable.

  • betterdesigned@xanga

@couturelovely@xanga - I'm sorry but since when does size dictate how heathy someone is? I know plenty of skinny people who are more sick with disease than my heavier friends.

  • couturelovely@xanga

@pawnshop_heart@xanga - I'm not saying thin people are healthy. I'm saying that being overweight is unhealthy.

  • MangoWOW@xanga

    @frozencherries@xanga - I never said they werent?

I'm saying this as a fat girl, it's hard to find fashionable clothes in stores. Even online a good chunk of the stores don't offer much for the larger ladies. And once the fashionable clothes does become moe available for bigger women it seems the fashion world moves on.

  • lastlyfirst@xanga

@couturelovely@xanga - Nice thought, but no, it doesn't motivate my fat ass to slim down. It just annoys me that I have to pay shipping for something I want.

  • phan__tom@xanga

@couturelovely@xanga - The fashion industry doesn't give a damn about your health. It's all about image and selling clothes.

  • The_Tudor_Rose@xanga

I think that most stores need to get over the inconvenience of changing a pattern or adding or even taking away fabric. It seems to me that the people on the outlying sizes never have clothes made for them. Even if it is the girls who are 00. I am blessed to be "average". If I were to make a clothing line, I would make it to fit the widest range of people! Everyone deserves to have cute clothes.

  • HippocreneQueen@xanga

Wait, the model in the picture is considered plus sized? wtf?

  • lastlyfirst@xanga

I hate when stores do that! The AE stores around here don't carry any pants sizes larger than 14 and no top sizes larger than XL. Forever 21 doesn't have their plus-size line available in stores around here either. Even stores like Old Navy, who specifically have a plus-size line & quite large ranges of sizes, don't make their bigger stuff available in all stores. It's quite frustrating.

I can remember being 5'9", 159lbs and still only fitting into a 12 at AE (& they were skin tight.) At the same time I was a size 10 at Old Navy. Seems like I can never win.

  • eomona@xanga

there are plus-size stores that carry nice clothing.

  • cinnamontoastsalinda@xanga

@couturelovely@xanga - Oh, you don't sound like an idiot at all...

  • iTekno@xanga

@dearFLOPPY@xanga - thats not true. more wemon in america are sizes 14-16. trust me, i know. and plussize isnt a desease. its a type of person. specialty stores??? no. stores in genaral should stop trying to be sidity and carry sizes for all body types.

  • TequilaKisses@xanga

Because skinnier people are everywhere and they tend to go shopping more often?

  • dearFLOPPY@xanga

sorry, i had no idea you couldn't interpret what i was trying to say. first of all, nowhere did i say that being plus size is a disease. maybe this is a sensitive topic for you, and you're overreacting. to put it more bluntly, when i go to the mall, i see maybe 3 people that are around size 12 and over if they're not pregnant (which of course, if you are, there are specialty stores for that as well). i merely stated that plus size items are not really a common size, at least where i live, so perhaps it is because if they stock plus sizes, they have to decrease more regular or "often bought" sizes, such as maybe 6 or 8. im neither of those, and i between a size 0-2, so at the other end of the spectrum, i don't consider myself a regular size either. and then i merely stated that if you're having trouble finding clothes, there are specialty stores that carry 12+ sizes.

  • vampiers_will_never_hurt_u@xanga

why do they need to carry size whale or something? sorry for being direct but come on...they sell the sizes more common for ppl. They arnt going to buy a bunch of size LX LXX LXXX just to watch it sit there and lose more money on it. I cant tell you ho wman times ive been to a popular store and those are the only sizes left. If fat is so common wouldnt you think the smaller sizes would be still sitting there instead?

I have no problem with fat ppl most of my friends are but the stores are just doing what convenients them more and who would blame em? A lot of them dont have my sizes either but im ont he complete opposite side but its like alright...this doesnt fit or look good. w.e moving on to something that does.

  • vampiers_will_never_hurt_u@xanga

go shop at torrid...lots of nice fashionable clothes for the bigger sizes.

  • ShimmerBodyCream@xanga

I think it is ridiculous. They should be accomodating the average american size. But their loss they will lose $$$ in the long run.
