Most hip hop videos follow the simple formula: hot women, lots of money, fancy cars, and lots of bling! I am a fan of most rap music, not exactly the radio songs that just get people to dance like Akon, but more of Mos Def and Talib Kweli.
I saw Snoop Dogg's new music video, which is basically girls in bikinis dancing around him in a car as it goes down a street. It is a pretty boring video in my opinion. It made me wonder if the formula for rap videos is getting old.
I think Snoop is a great artist to stay relevant this long, which is not easy in this music industry. However, other rappers such as Jay-Z have created great videos not using this formula. His latest video for "Empire State of Mind" is shot in black and white and highlights great spots in New York City.
Do you think rap videos will always follow the formula of using scantily clad women? Or is this getting tired?
HAHAHAHAHA i couldnt watch that without laughing. i also couldnt watch the whole thing.
these rappers want people to think that they are intelligent, and they dont want anyone to judge them as "stupid", "dumb", etc. and then they make mindless, talentless videos like this.
I don't like watching those videos. Then again, I'm not a guy.
I hate Snoop Dogg, lol...regardless of his crappy videos. I agree with @starsofplastic@xanga.
Wish in one hand, spit in the other and see which fills up faster.
I like to believe that they KNOW it's old, but they do it for the camp value so that people will talk about it. Such as posts like this.
I'm more into something new and different. Some videos, like "Live Your Life" by T.I. or that Jay-Z video you mentioned, actually show something new, and those are the ones that I pay attention to. Everytime I see one of these kind of videos that you are arguing against, I start rolling my eyes and think, "Not again..."
@live_for_love@xanga - Dayum, you'z lookin fiiiine girl. How 'bout I roll up on yo crib we can get a lil' sum'n sum'n on?
@live_for_love@xanga - Skizza in the shizza to the nizza snoop doggy dogg in tha rizza eatin' big macs fo' the fries and the frizza gettin' gorditas for the gizza and the pizza... all mah bitches on my bizza rollin on dubs twenty-fo' on the billa...
@live_for_love@xanga - Funny, that's what Snoop sounds like most of the time and he's a multi-platinum. Dude doesn't even make sense half the time he's rapping, hahaha.
will people get sick of watching hot women? lol, no.
most artists don't put a lot of effort into their music videos - nobody really watches them anyway. I think it's just something to do when they're bored.
I'm a big fan of music videos, but as far as rap videos go, I just don't even bother usually. However, one rap video I will always love is Jamie Foxx's "Blame It" video. Aside from the fact that it had Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, and RON HOWARD in it, I just felt like it was kind of mocking that hip hop video formula.
I feel like as long as their songs are about money, nice cars, and sexy, scantily clad women (or "bitches", depending on the song), it parallels that their videos should be about it as well.
I often see a lack of creativity in many rap (many, not all) songs anyway (the repeating of four computerized beats over and over, the same lyrical structure, the same emphasis on sex and money and drugs, the use of other, more well formed songs in their own by taking out, again, about a four beat section from a good song and using it as the entire background of their own song), so perhaps that parallels that lack of creativity when creating videos for those song.
@mankini@xanga - haha that video's pretty funny... oh Ron Howard!
Hip Hop finished at the end of 1984. The brilliance of Hip Hop in the 70's and early to mid 80's was magical.
The ONLY thing good about these new (new meaning the last 15-20 years) 'Rap' videos is these awesomely hot and fabulously gorgeous girls in them, and so I always turn the sound down when they come on so I don't have to hear the "music" and the terrible, hack "rhyming".
I've got to ask as well, are these dumb looking, clone-like, identikit thugz making these videos actually GETTING to make love with any of these girls that they are stroking their chins and nodding their heads at? Because if not, what's the point?
@S_K_O_T@xanga - Oh they probably!! and a lot of love. haha. video"hoes" basically sleep around to get whatever they want. ive been in a video (not proud of it) and i know how it works. good bodies and looking hot is what women have to offer and for some reason money is what the rappers have to offer especialyl since a lot of them are way below being attractive. So it works out. haha!
I personally love rap videos for this reason. They always have really pretty girls. I think it's inspiring in a way I guess, beauty-wise.
That song is soooo awful. I really hate it. The lyrics, the music, the people, and now... the video. I really dont like rap, especially not the videos. The girls half the time arent even pretty. They have a body but no face. Its irritating. And the songs are usually conceited. They always talk about having all the women, the money, and the "gear" and half the time people are wondering who the hell it is rapping.
LOL I was just thinking about this. I was watching some music videos and thinking "this is so boring! I like the song but damn every time!" and it's like there always to be atleast one hot chick in it. That's why I love it when I see a rapper come out with a creative video and good music. It's hard to find but they are out there.
Thing is will they play it.
I think you missed the satire of his more recent videos.
