Study: Most Women Want a "Tubelike" Body Shape
According to a study presented at the Psychological Society of Ireland, women polled said that their most desired figure was "tubelike."
Sexy!
Compared to women asked the same question in 1954, today's were more inclined to desire a lighter, boyish figure than an hourglass shape.
According to the study, "In 1954, the women on average aspired to lose just under 3lbs, while today’s woman wanted to shed more than 10lbs. 1950s women aspired to ideal hips measuring just over 35 inches, while modern women wanted hips of less than 31 inches but larger waists than the 1950s women."
We say boyish figures are cute, too (heck, I have one!), but there's still nothing wrong about sexy Bridget Bardot curves!
Do you like your body shape? Why do you think today's women want to look more boyish?

i love my body shape, i have curves in the right places. i'd never want to be "tube" shaped. (that just sounds weird..ugh.)
I'm pear-shaped, but I love it usually. Sometimes I wish I could make my boobs bigger to balance it out into an hourglass, but I have a tiny waist, cute boobs, and enormous hips. I like it. I'd never trade my hips, unless it were for a more balanced shape (i.e. hips that aren't so much bigger than my top half).
I don't understand why you'd want to be straight up and down, or "tubelike" or whatever.
I'm a big fan of the hour glass shape. I'd much rather have boobs and a booty and a tiny waist any day. It's what I've got, it's what my man likes, and I'm happy with that. :)
What?! No! I like my slight hourglass, wouldn't trade it for anything.
"Hourglass" sounds prettier than "tubelike" lol... I like my curves so I'll keep them :)
'Tube' shaped? Interesting. I'm not at all surprised by the desire to drop 10 pounds, though - I can relate.
When I think tube, the picture of a stick comes into my mind. If this is some kind of 'skinny' movement, it wouldn't exactly be novel.
Also, with all this emphasis on healthy living, diet plans, etc., I'm not so shocked that the typical hourglass figure is becoming more and more archaic. Curves are slowly becoming associated with fat (which isn't entirely untrue) and I've been noticing a backlash against the whole 'real women have curves' nonsense.
Real women have CONFIDENCE in their own bodies, regardless of curvature. So suck on that you silly cliche!
i still have issues with my body but i love my curves.
What does "Tube shaped" even mean? I like hour glass figures.
Hourglass is definately more appealing to me, seems almost lush, even Audry Hephern as skinny as she was - resembled an hourglass and good lord she was gorgeous.
Well, today's clothing is designed a lot for those rectangular, "tubelike" skinny girls. Like skinny jeans look horrible on anyone with large hips. Dropped waist dresses are just augh. Our clothing doesn't really accentuate the waist anymore [well, except the high waisted skirts].
I love my hips and my .67 waist to hip ratio. So yeah, I'm proud to not have a boyish figure. =]
That study only proves that women desire to look like the women that were considered ideally beautiful. It would be nice to have a study where the majority of the women said they liked their own bodies and didn't point to someone else that probably doesn't even look like they look in pictures especially in the day of photoshop. So what the women in the 50s wanted to change themselves into something else, just not the something else a lot of women want to be these days.
I like my body a lot better than I used to. If my breasts fit the size of my frame I would be more satisfied.
I like my body shape. I need to lose some weight, but the actual shape of my body, I like. I used to hate it and want to be a lot smaller, but I like the way I am now. I'd rather be like this, actually.
I think they want "boyish" figures because it's what a lot of models look like. And then everyone else is called fat. Sadly this happens a lot. It affects people and what they want to look like.
yay hourglass!
Hmm, I imagine it's just because skinny became popular. A true hourglass figure (waist is at least 9 inches less than bust/hips) is less common to begin with --so "tube-shaped" isn't necessarily a bad shape for many women to aspire to, since it will probably be closer to their natural shape. Well, if the circumference of the "tube" is reasonable, that is.
But I like my body shape, and I don't think there should be one ideal body shape. If people were cookies, we're those messy drop cookies that spread every which way, not cookie cutter cookies!
I love my curves, I probably have an hourglass figure more or less and I love it-so does my husband :)
@just_the_average_jane@xanga - I have to agree :)
I love my hourglass shape!
No tubes for me, sorry. I like being naturally curvy :)
tube shaped? uh... no thanks. i want boobs.
I'm happy with my hourglass figure thank you very much.
I'll be honest - I want to be as skinny as possible. I think clothes fit better and look better that way, I dont like excess fat getting in the way.
I like my body. I have curves, but I would like to tone everything a little to make me a little less flabby.
Women definitely want to be very thin in comparison to other generations...
Tube shaped? Yuck. Hourglass, please.
I have hourglass proportions already, I just need to slim down. I would never want to lose the shape, though.
I'm definitely an hourglass figure. I just measured myself today. 37, 28, 37. I love my body shape.
I think curves are super sexy. Seriously. SUPER HOT.
<3 Love everything about myself.
