  • Relax, Everyone, Push-Up Bras are Just Fine

I just read an article in my school's newspaper patronizing the new Victoria's Secret bra, the Miraculous Push-Up. The article stated that wearing the bra is not only false advertising (since it adds the appearance of two cup sizes), but it is also demeaning to women, making us try to fit into an unrealistically attainable mold.

Here's what I have to say in response to the article. Sure, it's misleading to make a B-cup girl look like she's got a set of D's, but it's a push-up bra! Giving the appearance of larger breasts is the whole point of a push-up bra. Yes, this particular bra gives more oomph than others may have, but what's wrong with that? If we're condemning this bra because it falsely advertises a girl's cup size, shouldn't we also condemn corsets, Spanx, control-top pantyhose, etc?

Plenty of clothes mislead the viewer into thinking that the wearer has a nicer body than they actually have. Dark colors and verticle lines are slimming, for example. Girls typically wear make-up to make themselves look prettier; is that so bad too? Point is, the girl who buys this bra might wish that she were more "blessed in the chest" but may not want to or have the money to have implants. Or perhaps she just wants to look extra busty every now and then. What's so wrong with that?

Further, I disagree that the bra objectifies women. Who's to say she's wearing it solely to look better for a man? Sure, it's likely, but she could also just be wearing it for herself, for an extra boost of confidence. I don't think that by buying the bra, you're condoning an unattainable mold for women. Look the way you want, whether it's your natural breast size or adding some padding to it.

What do you guys think about Victoria's Secret's New Miraculous Push-Up? Would you buy it?
