  • Lofty Thursdays: See A Guy Who Can Actually Decorate

    Lofty Thursdays: Sanctuary

When I designed my bedroom, I wanted to create a Sanctuary -- a place of solace, not only from the outside world, but from the rest of the home.  I feel as if the bedroom is a place reserved for rest, where a person can slide open the shoji-screen doors, and instantly be in a different place, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally.

To do this, I chose to take a contemporary Asian style; with hard, minimalist furniture but also with plush and comfortable soft textures.  I sought to create a Yin-and-Yang balance, not only between hard and soft, but light and shadow, and masculine and feminine.

I chose a color palette dramatically different from the surrounding rooms; one that was deliberately Monochromatic and color-neutral to create a relaxed feeling.  The floor is a dark hardwood, and all the hard furniture in the room is also dark Brazilian Mahogany.  I cut and made mouldings for the windows and painted them to match.

I use a lot of soft fabric, with translucent bamboo-leaf patterned sheers beneath simple, relaxed cappuccino-colored drapes that skirt the floor.  The walls are wooden panel, painted slightly matte and a few shades darker than the curtains to create a soft, slightly textured look that holds the "glow" from the Japanese Shoji-screen floor lamp.

I chose CK's Meadowgrass bedding, and then added in handmade Japanese square pillows using the same monochromatic concept as the rest of the room; with the center panel being the same texture as the curtains, and the edges matching the hard lines of the Brazilian Mahogany headboard and Platform bed frame.  My bed usually has about eight pillows messily tossed about on it at any given time.  Finally, I dressed the room with Orchids, which I grow outside.

There is no TV in this room, and unless I bring my laptop into bed (to listen to music mostly), there are no significant electronics in this room either.  This room is my solace, and sanctuary; where I retire to after a long day.

What do you think of this space?

    • About Me: I believe that Anyone can cook. And I'm here to teach people how to do that. I'm here to teach and build, one article at a time, a comprehensive cooking instruction site designed for a reader who doesn’t know how to cook at all; to be able to come in and build a foundation in cooking -- learning not only recipes, but also about the Ingredients they are using, Preparation and Cooking Technique, and the Science and History behind the food. I want them to be able to fully understand and be knowledgeable in cooking, and be completely comfortable in the kitchen. Anyone can cook. I believe this in my heart and soul. I believe that Food is Love, and that one of the best ways to show someone Love is to cook for them.
