Lofty Thursdays: See A Guy Who Can Actually Decorate
When I designed my bedroom, I wanted to create a Sanctuary -- a place of solace, not only from the outside world, but from the rest of the home. I feel as if the bedroom is a place reserved for rest, where a person can slide open the shoji-screen doors, and instantly be in a different place, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally.
To do this, I chose to take a contemporary Asian style; with hard, minimalist furniture but also with plush and comfortable soft textures. I sought to create a Yin-and-Yang balance, not only between hard and soft, but light and shadow, and masculine and feminine.
I chose a color palette dramatically different from the surrounding rooms; one that was deliberately Monochromatic and color-neutral to create a relaxed feeling. The floor is a dark hardwood, and all the hard furniture in the room is also dark Brazilian Mahogany. I cut and made mouldings for the windows and painted them to match.
I use a lot of soft fabric, with translucent bamboo-leaf patterned sheers beneath simple, relaxed cappuccino-colored drapes that skirt the floor. The walls are wooden panel, painted slightly matte and a few shades darker than the curtains to create a soft, slightly textured look that holds the "glow" from the Japanese Shoji-screen floor lamp.
I chose CK's Meadowgrass bedding, and then added in handmade Japanese square pillows using the same monochromatic concept as the rest of the room; with the center panel being the same texture as the curtains, and the edges matching the hard lines of the Brazilian Mahogany headboard and Platform bed frame. My bed usually has about eight pillows messily tossed about on it at any given time. Finally, I dressed the room with Orchids, which I grow outside.
There is no TV in this room, and unless I bring my laptop into bed (to listen to music mostly), there are no significant electronics in this room either. This room is my solace, and sanctuary; where I retire to after a long day.

I'm still totes jealous of this room. I want it. xD
This is gorgeous! The colors, textures, lighting...I absolutely love it all.
I love how you mixed textures. I think a lot of people neglect texture when they decorate, but it can provide a lot of warmth and personality to the space. I wish I could see the entire room because the area you showed in this picture intrigues me.
I really like the lamp and the headboard.
Is that a teddy bear I see on the bed? :D
Great job. It doesn't only look great it looks comfy too!
WOW. it looks beautiful and so comfy. i envy you >_<
That looks great.
Very nice! I, too am a fan of the asian/modern style.
I would have liked to see more pictures of the room, though.
You know, at first I was excited about this project, but now I'm just
sad because my designs hardly compare to the ones shown so far! :(
Gorgeous!! I don't normally like the brown colourblock but I love your room. It seems perfect to sleep out, and comfy too!!
It looks totally awesome! You just inspired me!
I like yo' teddy bear.
:)
Love it!
i love it! i'm feeling very inspired now to redecorate my room now.
@methodElevated@xanga - Ahhh... o.O When I saw this post go up on Lovelyish I was like "GAH!" I couldn't believe they posted it. I submitted very early, and I was hoping they forgot I submitted after seeing your place D: (which, I know I've told you three times now, but damn I love your color palette haha). I thought it was a "take a photo, send it in" kind of thing, and then I saw you submit your entire place; I feel all like -.- now.
There's actually supposed to be a 7' bamboo tree behind that too, next to the lamp, but it wasn't doing well. And yes, that's Mr. Boo haha.
@live_for_love@xanga - Get over here so we can build the beach house! With the pavilion and the flowy curtains and the giant mattress floor next to the beach :)

@chelseanataliex@xanga - @Our_New_Beginning@xanga -
@repressedwriter@xanga - Thanks guys :D
@eomona@xanga - Awesome, hopefully this Lofty Thursday thing keeps going well and you can get some good ideas from the others here :)
@babixling@xanga - Thanks :) Funny thing is that I usually don't like the Brown palette either, but for some reason in this application it felt very tranquil and serene to use it monochromatically like this. The rest of the place is actually much more dramatic in color :) Baby blue, seafoam green, white bathroom/ Emerald Green, maroon, gold living room, etc. :)
@tragic_smile@xanga - Mr. Boo says thank you :D
@i_r_keiko@xanga - Thanks :) I know what you mean though -- I submitted this early when I thought it was just a "one photo" and write up thing, before MethodElevated put up her awesome set of photos. I actually feel like "GAAAH" since my post came up immediately following hers. If I saw hers first, I probably wouldn't even have submitted haha.
Seriously though, I think this whole Lofty Thursday thing is not necessarily about how "nice" something is -- but how we make creative use of our personal spaces. I'm betting a lot of Lovelyish readers have some pretty amazing things they can share.
@chow@ireallylikefood - Only if you promise we can have a panda themed room. :D
*envy* it looks so comfey! I wish I had the room to create a space like that.
@chow@ireallylikefood - Oh, don't worry about comparisons. Yours is lovely, and I was overzealous with showing practically every room in my place, anyway. I'm happy to see someone else participated in Lofty Thursdays because I wasn't really expecting it to catch on. So now I don't feel all alone. :)
All of my stuffed animals throughout my life have been male, too, and frequently started with "Mr." hehe I like it when adults are brave enough to admit they have stuffed animals, especially adorable ones like Mr. Boo.
Come decorate my room! ^_^
@chow@ireallylikefood - it is nice to have such a place to fall back into... I've always envisioned my future house to be white (= Some green maybe, but white. I like white.
oh. my. gosh. amazing!
Wow, great room :) Jealousss, nothing in my room goes together, kinda icky...
wow its so pretty, im jealous, and i know what you mean about the part of your place, my house is all white and my mom's style, so o decided to make my room 100% mine, but then ¬¬ my brother thought it was a good idea to paint it white ¬¬ but aaag im decided to get my room back.
I loveeeee your taste, someone sleeps like a kink there =P
It looks great! Your bed looks so warm and comfortable...
so pretty. and ORCHIDS. ah nice choice.
very nice - Mine is similar in mood and style but with muted blues and greens accents. I find these colors with dark wood very relaxing and tranquil for me. I love contemporary Asian design. Orchids are also my favorite flower.
oh hot damn.
i love the lighting.
