Happy Birthday, Hello Kitty!
Hello Kitty turned 35 this past weekend! Does that make her Hello Cougar?
The famous cute cat was created in Japan in 1974 as part of the gretting card company Sanrio.
In the 90's she was given her first boyfriend (Dear Daniel) and quickly became popular in the rave scene. Her popularity continues to increase, especially with the help of two HK themed jewelry collections by Kimora Lee Simmons and Tarina Tarantino.

Random Fact: Internally in Sanrio, the abbreviation for Hello Kitty is KT, not HK.
Random Fact: Hello Kitty has a twin sister named Mimi, who apparently is very shy. Poor Mimi, with her glory hogging twin sister.
Random Fact: The JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) merchandise line is -very- different from the US/ North American line. The product is much much better. Most US Sanrio Stores don't have access to it, or only in very limited amounts. To get JDM merchandise, we actually fly to Japan to do prebook orders and have it sent here. There's a lot more "boutique" style merchandise in the Japanese Domestic Market; including some very nice handbags/ fashion accessories targeted at 25-40 year old working women (like the Tokidoki line from earlier this year).
We considered opening a Sanrio Boutique store before, but decided the market wouldn't support it. We're opening a 2,000 square foot Sanrio Cafe in a few months as an experiment.
We have an actual Hello Kitty store here :) Everything is hello kitty imported from Japan
but its kinda pricey

OMG, I REMEMBER SANRIO!!!! We used to have a store in our mall with all of the other characters like the frog and the dog....I can't remember their names though. Man, talk about a trip down memory lane.
Omgush, I love Hello Kitty. I'm 17 and I have Hello Kitty PJ pants that I adore, HK purse, and some stickers.... best thing ever!!

@chow@ireallylikefood - I used to watch the English dub VHS tapes of Sanrio characters, so Mimi and Daniel are ridiculously familiar to me. This makes me void of street cred whatsoever, and I would actually visit a Sanrio Cafe for very nostalgic reasons. Please open one in New York.
I only started loving Hello Kitty in the past year and I'm 18. I have a Hello Kitty coloring book and I color it and hang them on my dorm walls.
I used to collect Hello Kitty stuff. :) Hehehe It was fun.

A little girl I was, a grown women I am, As the last thing I mentioned, I would not flaunt anything 'HK" related. It's too little girl. Like the women with HK stuff was ditsy.
I love the really expensive Hello Kitty jewelry. I don't really give a fuck if it's too "little girl", I'm a proud fan and proudly wear my Hello Kitty themed stuff.
