  • The "Asian Wedding Trend" Post Was Wrong!

    New Wedding Trend? : MISUNDERSTANDING

A recent post featured on Lovelyish, "Korea's Bizarre New Wedding Trend: Is It Sexist?" sparked quite a bit of controversy.

First, I would like to note: This is NOT the "new wedding trend" of Japan, Korea, China, OR ASIA.

There are many negative comments, I will list some of them in point form:

    • Sexist, demeaning to women
    • Weird/Creepy/Freaky/What else do you expect from Japan?
    • Manga/Anime
    • Crazy Japanese people
    • Normal for Japan/ Japan's always been like this regarding women, nothing's new
    • Dumb
    • Asia sees things differently

The source of the post is from Tacky Weddings.

Unfortunately, sexism is not the problem here, the problem is clearly racism. Everyone is judging these "wedding photos", looking for the worst in them, and basing that on culture, countries, and even a continent. Did anyone stop and think of them as photos? Because if you look closely at the ones that are Korean (Tacky Weddings has all the pictures) it is very evident that the girl is photoshopped into the picture. The small text that appears in white over and over again at the corner of the pictures say "Harvard Design". The other Korean text in the photo is photoshopped as well, and taken from the Korean movie "My Little Bride" (hmm... I wonder where this idea came from?). These pictures were taken from a Korean school website. These pictures were a part of an assignment.

Now, the set of Chinese photos. The bottom corner of these photos is a link to a China website much like Yahoo (you can blog, use forums, get updates on the latest news, weather, etc). Take a look at the other logo in the top corners, this logo is one of a broadcasting company. These photos are from an advertisement.

Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (or Asia, as some may prefer), are very traditional people. Perhaps this is a boring part of their lifestyle and therefore not advertised. I do not blame people for not knowing this, I blame the ignorant people that write or send in posts like this, making up the information to go along with the pictures (I blame Tacky Weddings, not the Lovelyish OP, she was a victim of this). Japanese, Korean, and Chinese weddings would NOT have this type of photo shoot. Many Japanese, Korean, and Chinese wedding may not even have a wedding gown because they have their own ceremonial dresses.

Stop judging other people's cultures based on the ignorant facts you obtain from biased sources!

After reading this, what are your views on these photos? Still sexist?

mm well, now that i think about it...

  • makerm7@xanga

    Preach it.

And from an artistic viewpoint, I kind of find the pictures unique and pretty awesome.  Even if they aren't 'real.'

  • tomatobaby

Well... I think the concept is humourous. You can also have a little man on hand~

  • GieGieHeart@xanga

Never thought it was sexist to begin with, but this was enlightening. Good post.

  • i_Nutrition@xanga

    Thanks for the info.
Although it was easily believable... I just see trends and fads as very quick and coming in Asia.

  • skinxbonesx@xanga

THANK YOU for this post. People can be so ignorant and rude when it comes to cultural differences. I am asian, and my mother never even OWNED a wedding gown, let alone have a wedding. They had their own cultural celebrations, which are the norm in that part of society. So thanks for spreading the light about this!

  • ChOcOChObO@xanga

I never even heard about it and im LIVING in Korea. Considering I have been to a wedding recently, I think it's been lost in translation.

  • stuipdthing@xanga

This was a good post thanks

  • Rachies_Icons@xanga

the pictures aren't sexist, or really wedding pictures, but they're still kind of creepy. i wouldn't want a giant staring at me and smiling...

  • actualization@xanga

    1. I looked at the website that the other blog sourced, and it was all in a language that I can't read.  So sorry if we didn't know what the website was for and if it was biased.

    2. All of the pictures in the post and on the website were of Asian people. (Sorry, I can't tell who's from Korea vs Japan vs China, etc. I only say "asian" because I don't want to say the wrong country and offend anyone.) Because everyone in all the pictures are asian, and there's asian writing on the website, we assume that it's a style of photography that comes from asia. I don't think that that makes me racist.

    3. Yes, of course we think of them as photos. Photos of a certain trend that we've never seen before. I thought it was cute, creative and well-executed.

    4. The person that posted that blog did say that there was sexism implied by the photographs. I can understand that because in some pictures the bride was literally "wrapped around her husband's finger". But I didn't pay too much attention to that. Some people read into ideas when they're not really there. Who really knows if there is a sexist intent behind the photos besides the photographer? Only he/she knows what they intended to convey. I saw the photos as whimsical and fun; others thought that the small size of the bride indicated of how little worth or importance she is. This is a case of conjecture. It's up to the viewer to decide what to think of it.

I understand and appreciate you posting a response to the original post, but I do not appreciate your aggressive tone, or the suggestion that I/we are racist.

  • Crimson_Ballad@xanga

People labeled sexism or whatever to have something to do. what the hell about that is sexist? The bride is small. Girls are shorter than guys in general. This is ridiculous.  Bored people like drama. Go figure. I think it's cool really. I like how people think outside the box. Basically, you did nothing wrong. You're just surrounded by bored people who like to think they're above everyone else. I don't care if anyone finds what I'm saying offensive. I just tell it like it is. I mean. Look at mancouch. it's been overrun with bitchy bleeding vaginas. You say something- it's your comment, your opinion. And then you get all bitched at. Not by guys. By a bunch of girls. The type of girls that never shutup. And get pissed when you don't call them back after they've sent you a million text messages already. I don't ask for anyone's opinion. I have no reason to care. If these guys like arguing, I think they should start up another site. debateish or something like that. All of this has turned into Highschool debate team.

  • riacolette@xanga

These photos are SO CUTE and I want to mimic them for fun, not even just for a wedding!

  • Abrilsuka@xanga

i didnt know it wasnt real and i actually saw the pictures like an idea, not the lates thing that is happening in asia, and i actually i find them cute and not sexist at all.
i hope this open peoples eyes and start to think about the general idea before open their mouths and talk about where the idea comes from -_-"

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

i didn't think the pictures were sexist, but i'm going to disagree with your argument. even if the photos were for a design assignment, they were still based on some aspect of culture (the film, for example). advertisements are also supposed to appeal to the aesthetic sense/values of the masses, or else they would fail in their purpose. so if someone were to take these photos/ads/projects and from them extrapolate the (perhaps sexist?) ideals of a culture, i think it's a perfectly valid train of thought.

  • mTs

was it racism when a lot of the commenters were asian? but i never said anything wrong in the first place.

  • kyan

I just thought they were odd. It didnt matter to me whether they were Asian or not. It reminds me of thumbelina.

  • npr32486@xanga

    it all makes sense now

  • Devildogs_Doll@xanga

I'll bet most of the nasty comments were from Americans, too...that's because we are TOO hung up on sexism, racism, etc.  It's RIDICULOUS!

I'm an American living in Japan.  Their culture is very different than our is and better, I believe.  They have not let political correctness seep into their infrastructure and wreak havoc on the entire country.  There are Japanese prank shows that air here that Americans would sue over if they were the victims of such pranks.  I still love America, but damn, we have lost our sense of humor as a nation.  We take ourselves too seriously.  We take EVERYTHING too seriously and other countries are taking note and that's why many of them are starting to hate Americans.  We're like the guy that walks into a party and cries that the music is too loud and it's hurting his ears...and omigod...do those hors d'oeuvres have MEAT in them?  Don't you know I'm vegan and that's MURDER?  Yes, we are becoming THAT guy...a total drag.
Harry Connick Jr. just caused a big stink on an Australian talk show where he was a judge because of an act HE deemed "racist" that the crowd obviously didn't think so.  He carried on like a big baby and demanded an apology to our country.  In Japan, they used to air these McDonald's commercials of an American tourist in Japan who tried too hard to fit in and kept botching their language, etc (more on this:  http://www.julieinjapan.com/2009/08/japans-racist-mr-james-mcdonalds-ads.html - actually, I saw the ads and thought they were hilarious).  Now, if an American company made a commercial making fun of tourists in OUR country - there would be hell to pay.
It's nothing anyone did wrong in making the post about the photos...It's political correctness killing everything again.  I say we LAUGH about our differences and learn to laugh at ourselves, not go crying, whining, crying "racism", "sexism", etc. every time someone sneezes.  It's getting old fast.  Everyone needs to lighten up and think about the motives behind something before we deem it true racism or sexism.
  • yukarimayhem@xanga

yeh! :) tell it lik eit is :P
    xD

  • xjadersx@xanga

Never thought it was sexist. Just a bit of fun.

  • s_h_a_sha@xanga
  • emra_cadaver@xanga

i thought the pics were cute for whatever reason they were made and did think it was odd that the women were wearing white wedding gowns. thank you though for clearing this all up.

  • KoalaHero@xanga

What do they know about Asians anyway? Every Asian country has its own cultures, trends, traditions and superstitions. These idiots couldn't tell the difference.

  • livefastbleedslow@xanga
  • coolmonkey@xanga

That post and the one about all Asian dudes being cheaters has gotten me wondering why Xanga is on such a Asian male-hating rampage?  First they love to advertise Yellow Fever, I mean, whenever an Asian girl talks about how people should love anyone they choose, then that gets featured.  Whenever posts demean Asian men, they get featured too.  Seriously, what's up with Xanga?
