Why Is Halloween an Excuse to Dress Like a Skank?
I've always loved dressing up on Halloween ever since I was a little girl. I typically make most of my costumes (with a sewing machine or by taking a trip to a second-hand store) because I like being original. There have been years I wanted to be lazy and buy a costume, but I have two problems with buying a costume.
1. 99% of women's costumes are skanky
2. Even if I had no problem dressing like a skank, I live in New York. In New York Halloween is typically cold. Even if I'm inside at a party most of the day, I don't want to have to run out for five minutes in a mini skirt.
I know there are fun modest costumes out there but the majority of them look like this:
As far as I'm concerned none of these costumes are in any way original, they're just mini-skirts and high heels.
These costumes were what the majority of ladies wore at the last Halloween party I went to.
Here are few examples of the typical mini-skirt and heels costumes. These cases are a bit more special in that they don't make historical, practical or any kind of sense.
1. Marie Antoinette
The real Marie Antionette would never have worn anything like this! Not even a prostitute from the French Revolution would have worn this. Plus it's Halloween, if I was going as Marie, I'd throw fake blood around my neck and see if I could find a prop guilloteen of sorts.
2. An Eskimo That is Going to get Hypothermia and Die
I think the hypothermia is self explanatory.
3. Spider-Girl
This is not the real Spider-girl. The real Spider-girl is Spider-man's daughter. She wears a catsuit just like him and doesn't wear stilettos. Besides, what happened to female superheroes? This year I've seen a lot of ads for female versions of male superheroes.
4. A Nurse
I know the sexy nurse is something that has been around for years, but it really annoys me that normal nurse costumes don't exist. Last year I dressed up as the nurse joker. I couldn't find a nurse costume that wasn't skanky so I ended up buying a lab coat at a second hand store and using that. It wasn't perfect but I think it was closer to the nurse joker than any skanky nurse costume could've gotten me. I also wore sneakers when I went out, just like real nurses do because they're on their feet all day.
Yes, I will admit that I eventually got cold. But, I did wear a trench coat and had a pair of jeans in my bag. The year before last I went as the star from Mario (I cut a star out of yellow poster paper and drew eyes on it) and I'm still thinking of what I'm going to dress up as this year.
So, when did Halloween become the day to dress like a skank? Ladies, would you wear any of these costumes, especially if where you live its typically cold on Halloween? Would you rather more people wore interesting original costumes?

They always use Halloween as an excuse to dress like a skank. Whenever I got to a Halloween store I tell friends, "Look. You can be a hoe, a slut, a skank, a whore, a spermdumpster . . . " I saw one recently where it was an army woman costume . . . but it had fishnets. No army woman wears fishnets with an uniform.
Because no one wants to dress up as a "real nurse" seriously.
I dress up as a 50's housewife. I order my dress from a site that makes vintage type dresses. Throw on a cardigan, curl my hair up. Done. And It is not slutty at all. I hate how every single costume you buy at the store for females looks like that. I am chubby, and NO ONE wants to see me parading around in those outfits. Even the plus size costumes are just nasty.

Sorry. I'm part of the mainstream heterosexual male demographic that skanky Halloween costuming appeals to.
I think that it's for little kids..
In all fairness, I think the assumption is that if you're dressing like a slutty anything, you're too old for trick or treating, and therefore don't care that it's cold out in October.

the girls who dress in freaky costumes are just showing how freaky they feel the other 364 days of the year. it's just only ok to do it on halloween!
when you get to the age of high school, thats when. I personally don't see the point, and thus created my own superhero costume last year, I have no clue what I will do this year.
Halloween is supposed to be fun, that's why!

lol, so true. but i think that those that are already skanks are the ones that will wear stuff like these. non-skanks will come up with their own, actually creative ideas. ;)
I am not slutty in the least . . . do I know where this trend came from? Well, media, society, etc., etc. . . . however, I am still all for being slutty one day out of the year because I'm not the other 364 days!! It's supposed to be fun, no matter how you dress or how you celebrate it. I get that the costumes are ridiculous, but a lot of people think it's fun. I know I do! I think it's great when people create their own costumes as well! Trust me, I joke about the costumes as well, but some of them are really cute!!

I dress however i want any day of the year. Halloween will be no different.

C'mon.. I'm all for girls showing off what they have if they are confident with it. I like looking at it. They like being looked at. Whats the problem? If girls want to express their sexuality and be a little naughty on Halloween, don't complain.. just enjoy it.
i dislike showing off my body. i try to choose costumes that cover myself. such as a boy or a cat. not a sexy cat but a cat. lol.
but i guess its a day to be wild & free for once

I'm too big for any of those kind of costumes, but if I had the body, I'd work it if my boyfriend was around. :)
But I've stopped dressing up for Halloween because I'm too old. So I don't care. As long as they aren't dressed like that in front of their kids because they might be scarred for life seeing mommy's boobs half out. :P

god im so piss, cuz I want to properly dress up for halloween, i LOVE it.
Except the adult section is always skanky.. I wish I could fit in the little kids one =(
I'm Chinese, and I hang with Chinese people.. and they are more conservative.
Even if I wear something slightly short, I'll probably still look like a slut to them.
haha, what I don't understand is people going out in those costumes to a party when it's 40 degrees outside for the unfortunate people living in that kind of weather. here, at night, it's around 70 degrees or so, so that kind of clothing seems okay. but still. LOL.
it's the same deal with cosplay -- girls that dress like skanks *COUGH PRINCESS LEIA SLAVE GIRL COSTUME IS UGLY AND STOREBOUGHT COUGH* get lots of male attention. But I'd rather have a cute girl in a well-made costume.... yummy!
