Size 2? Too Fat. You're Fired.
Former Ralph Lauren model Filippa Hamilton claims she was fired from the company for being too fat. Which in model terms means like what, a size 2?
Filippa had been with Ralph Lauren since 2002 (she was in the Ralph Lauren Blue perfume ads!), and she was terminated in April because, as she says, "they said I was overweight and I couldn't fit in their clothes anymore."
Then, following her termination, the ad (on the left) appeared only in Japan, and holy Photoshop, Batman! They made her waist skinnier than her head! Creepy!
Filippa is 5 foot 10 and 120 pounds, which is a BMI of 17.2...definitely underweight! Yikes! Ralph Lauren denies the weight-based termination, instead saying that it came "as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us."
Do you think Ralph Lauren really fired her because of her weight? Should companies be able to enforce weight standards for models?

sheesh... she weights the same as me.... except i'm 6 inches shorter!
so much skinny model hate lately. but that photoshop is looks disturbing.
That insanely skinny picture scares me in the same way that a horror movie would. It's disgusting...Just as firing someone for being "too fat" is disgusting when they're still skinnier than the norm.
I don't think companies should be able to do that...it's discrimination :[
That photoshop looks funny.
Knowing the fashion industry it wouldn't surprise me. I also suspect it has something to do with all the bad press they got for that horribly photoshopped picture. I mean her head is wider then her hips in that pic while in the other picture she looks very pretty though in my opinion much too skinny. (I find most models too thin.) I just don't see why people can't just embrace natural (and healthy.) beauty. It would be wonderful to see more models at healthy weights out there and even more wonderful if folks didn't edit them to look like bratz dolls.
That's disgusting.
No wonder people grow up with such skewed views on beauty.
I've noticed they photoshop models to look like bobbleheads
hahahahahaha that photo is hilarious
She looks much better and more...real in the picture on the right. I think there really are people like in the "left" picture.
if they didn't enforce weight standards, they would almost not be a modeling agency.
and if you're going to blame anyone for the 'skinny' look people are killing themselves for, blame sweet ol' twiggy.
zomg. the one on the left is really scaryyyyy
hmm...I thought she was 5'8. I just read this in my newsfeed with NYFashion online magazine or whatever it's called...
and that's pretty normal, for models to be fired at that size unless they're VS models, who NEED some fat. But speaking as a person who is not in that industry, ew.
She looks way better in the real picture on the right, the ad picture on the left is nasty! I understand that companies want thin woman to wear their clothes, but getting rid of a model because she is "too big" when she is still very thin is ridiculous! I believe that models and the modeling world should be forced to use HEALTHY models, thin, but not underweight super skinny models.
You can say this isn't right but if it's their company, they can set up any standards they want. They don't force anyone to model for them.
I would date her on the right ..
that photo makes me want to eat a hamburger.
She looks great to me. The picture on the left barely looks human--no one is actually that small! I do think the fashion world needs thin models, but there is a big difference between thin and skeletal. And I don't think size 0-4 models should monopolize the industry, either; I think there is a definite place for healthy plus-size models as well. (In my opinion, "healthy" translates to no ribs/bones showing, and no sloppy fat rolls hanging out.)
I thought she was 5'10, 120 lbs, size 4.
That's kinda underweight, according to the BMI index...
And they thought she's fat? ....
i think she's gorgeous as is.... the edited photo is deformed and not enviable at all!
Yeah, she definitely isn't fat. Probably a bit underweight; I feel so bad for her.
@boilingicicle@xanga - she is a size 4* - according to the interview on TV
Lovelylish got it wrong
she couldnt fit into their sample clothes - thats why they thought she's fat* - hence fired
While I don't want to see models that jiggle while they model, I also dont want to see models that look like they're going to fall over because their body isn't strong enough to support the weight of their head... which is exactly what the first picture reminds me of.
Also, I dont think they should have weight, but BMI requirements instead. Both minimum and maximum.
And on another note, she doesnt look fat in the second picture... she looks NORMAL! I would love to see more models of that size and less as thin as in the first picture!
wowww that is hecka weird disproportionate picture on the left. LOL
Seriously, it's unfair to her how much photoshopping was done to the picture of her. If nothing else, she should be compensated for such a sick distortion of her body, because no one deserves to have that done to them. The picture seems to only back up her claim that they fired her because of her size.
However, I suppose if it's a company, they can set up their own rules and qualifications, which is a shame because she is a beautiful girl in real life. I hope someday companies can see the beauty in girls of a wider variety of sizes- not obese/overweight (because that's unhealthy), but if you've got big hips, you should be able to flaunt them like girls without big hips flaunt their thin frames. just an example. I guess what I'm saying is we need to start seeing the beauty in variety. :)
