I Hate American Apparel!
I really hate American Apparel! All my friends shop there, but I can't stand it. Here's why:
1. Their clothes are boring and unimaginative. Yes, there's all the basic tees and stuff, but then there's also the weird things like shiny fanny packs and silver hot pants. They somehow get hipsters to buy it! Just because it's sold by AA. It's too convenient; it's easy to pick up your 16th basic tee in cerulean. It's harder to cultivate your own original style.
2. I hate the ads. They all have skinny hipsters posing in dirty yoga moves, wearing a pair of gold sparkly leggings. Some of the ads have reportedly featured underage female models and a lot of them have nudity. Check out this one, featuring one of its own employees. Sexist!
3. It's so expensive! $20 for a tee shirt?
4.. They try to make it seem like they're all about social justice and the environment. But the CEO is a creep! Dov Charney actually has several sexual harassment suits against him, from his own staff! Read this article. He's been quoted as saying that he thinks it's fine to engage in sexual relationships with his own employees. He also allegedly masturbated in front of a reporter from Jane magazine during an interview. Gross.
What do you think about American Apparel? Do you shop there?

I remember reading this post a few months ago...
@soniiuh@xanga - as do i.
strange.
i like it.
Never have, never will.
o.o
wat
anyway, i only buy american apparel if they have their $5 deals. it's much better for my wallet.
I like some random things at AA (hoodies, vests, tights) but honestly, can't be bothered to pay that much for said items. Never heard that before about the CEO, that's horrible.
@soniiuh@xanga - nope, different posts! that one was by a different author and was only about how she disliked the ads. here's the link. :)
I'm not a big fan of their ads either. But girl...Haven't you seen a t-shirt for $1,850? Yes, $1,850. Not $18.50. For a black plain cashmere T-shirt. (http://laist.com/2009/01/21/mostexpensivetshirt.php)
$20 a pop is not cheap. But it's not expensive. Tees from Gap cost $18.50, so only $1.50 short of $20. And when does wearing basic items = no style? You can still look the best and chic in T-shirt and jeans. Clothes don't define our style...how we mix it, match it, and wear it define our style. And clothes don't define us. Our personality does. :)
The best hoodie I ever owned came from AA. It was super soft and it lasted forever. I agree their stuff IS expensive, but I thought I was definitely getting my money's worth.
Though I can't defend the CEO, that guy is a creep. I also always thought the models they used were all very strange looking.
@mich28@xanga - wow! that tshirt is crazy! if you want to submit a post on it we will happily run it :)
i agree soooo much. although i do like some of their basic clothes, why would i ever spend $40 on a glorified t shirt? seriously, they sell a dress that is essentially a large t shirt with the collar cut off for something like $35. and their ads are terrible. seriously, they make me sick. the models don't wear real outfits and half the time might as well be naked. okay, i'm sorry i am done ranting now...
Hm, their shirts are pretty soft though... but I'd never spend $20 on one.
Even when I buy Gap tshirts, I get them on sale, so usually less than $8. =]
I thought I was the only one that hated it..
overpriced as hell, but made in USA (not child labour for sure) and perfect outfits for matching (love their bodysuits and dresses)
Does the guy who runs the business being a perv have anything to do with if he's doing a good job? His employees are actually really happy, if you've seen the short business documentary they did on AA. They have on the spot masseurs for when they get tired from the manual labour, and also english language classes for those who don't know how to speak english and want to learn.
Supposedly, those sexual relations (with his employees) are consensual, but hey, who knows what's the truth these days.
I don't like their ads, or the image they present in their stores, but I'm sure if I had the money, I'd buy it. Some of their stuff is nice.
I once went to there in a search for thigh high gym socks. $15 -_____- i ended up paying $5 somewhere else. hah
oh my goodness, agreed one hundred and ninety percent.
i like their stuff. but it is overpriced and unnecessary
i agre. I dont see why people like it so much, it is boring and way toos imple for the cost . its crazy
It is expensive, but it's a quality product.
I have a ton of their basics and i love them. Their colors don't fade and they don't stretch out right away. i'm okay with spending the extra few dollars for tshirts because i know i'll have them in the long run.
you can't say that about a lot of other clothing brands.
who cares about the ads? is it really relevant? do they effect the quality? no.
who cares if hipsters jock aa?
I shop there on occasion but I dont LOVE it. My rationale is that i'd rather pay $20 for a shirt I love than $5 for a shirt thats just ok and sits in my closet. And if I see something that screams "buy me" at AA, I will do it, or else find something elsewhere. Personally, I dont really care what kind of a jerk the CEO of some company is...I dont think about it when i'm wearing the clothes. I never had a problem with abercrombie or calvin klein back in the day because of their suggestive ads, I dont think i'm going to start now with AA.
I LOVEEE AA. I used to feel the same way about how overpriced they were...the fact that they sell mostly basics and its nothig special. But honeslty, they have some goooood quality shit. Its worth the money. I have a couple pieces from them...i wear their dresses to the club n bar n stuff.....their sweatshirt are amazzzingly comfortable as well.
I dont get people. You complain and bitch about third world countries and places like china using child labor so that your products can be cheap...and then when we make shit in the US...with no child labor you bitch too...uhh its gonna be more expensive if its manufactured in the US.
your the reason child labor exist. your rufusal to purchase more expensive goods that are made in the US
ok thats freaky. i was just thinking about going to their job interview, but nvm. never bought from it, prob never will due to overpriced items. jsut bc its made in US. and never liked their ads. i pass by one everyday, its becoming an eyesore
no, and i never would.
their clothes are ugly, and expensive.
haha my (used to be) best friend loves that place. He's a super hipster though, so i guess it makes sense.
It's too expensive for me personally... but I am willing to pay more for things made in the US! I just know that I can go to other places and find US-made clothing for less money. If i had more money, i wouldn't mind spending it on the clothes there- i mean, basics are the things you should invest in- but I am usually broke. so that doesn't work too well!
The sexuality has always kind of creeped me out though...
what's wrong with hipsters and shiny fanny packs and clothing that is made in the USA instead of in the horrible conditions of asian sweatshops?
ehhhh.....i don't shop there though. too much $$$$$$
and NAKED ADS
