  • The Confusing World of Mineral Make-up

I first entered the confusing world of mineral makeup not too long ago...3 weeks to be exact. I suffer from what my family calls...the acne gene of death. So I have been battling off cystic acne for the past several months. (Thanks, mom).

My Dermatologist insisted that I should wear only  a non-comedogenic makeup. He asked me what I had been using and told me to throw away my:

    1. Neutrogena "acne free" (psh yea right) liquid foundation...and

    2. My Physicians Formula mineral make up wear. (Sure it smelled like goat, but I thought it was working for me.)

I reluctantly agreed, but later I panicked at the thought of facing my beloved asshat at work without something to cover up my problem areas.

I went to Ulta and got smooth talked into buying Bare Minerals. Although they had a very hard time trying to find one of their shades to fit my "too dark for light, too light for medium" skin, I settled on trying 2C medium. I like the feel of my makeup, and have noticed that I've been breaking out less. I don't know if this is due to the makeup or if it's one of the fifty medications I have been on for my acne.

I like bare minerals...but am still unsatisfied that it doesn't match quite right, and the coverage isn't all the best. I don't want to wear pounds and pounds of makeup, but have heard from others that Pur minerals and Raw mineral foundations do a better job covering up without chocking your pores and causing pimples.

So guys, (especially my fellow acne buddies) what mineral foundation do you use and why? Have you tried more than one of these products? How do they compare in coverage and quality?

hum.. no one. And sometimes, Stargazer powder (but don't know if it's mineral, and don't think it is). I had acnee, and when I use foundation or mineral powders, the problem went worse, so I stopped.

I used to use bare minerals, and it worked fine for the first six months or so, but then it started to be cakey, or otherwise it just wouldn't give me the amount of coverage I wanted. It ended up looking really bad after about a year and a half, so I switched back to normal cosmetics like covergirl and maybelline, even if they aren't the best for my skin. I haven't had the drive to try any other mineral make up yet.

Lancome, the 'photogenic' compact. I SWEAR BY IT!

i used bare minerals and all that too. I'm even allergic to some laundry detergents and body washes.

it's really light, put it on with a brush like the one you use for bare minerals. and you don't have to pack it.. one sweep all around your face.

Lancome IS expensive, so, when you buy, make sure they're 'IN GIFT' which means you get free stuff.

Avons mineral make-up is great! I love it the best and I have tried 3 different types. It's very smooth, great coverage. I dealt with not finding the best shade for me and either looking washed out or too dark or orange. With avons I was sent two different foundation shades a blush, and a powder and brush in a package...It doesn't matter which light foundation I grab each morning, it matches my skin tone great and gives me amazing coverage. The blush is killa, and the powder makes me look like amazing.

I used to use Bare Minerals, but I switched over to Maybelline's Mineral Power foundation. I LOVE it. It layers really well and works for me better than the more expensive Bare Minerals. I have similar skin to yours, pretty pale but not pale enough for the lightest foundation. I get the no. 2 classic ivory with Maybelline, and it does a great job of matching my skin. It's easy to find at Target or Walmart, too, plus I don't go through it as fast as I did a container of Bare Minerals. I highly recommend it! (The blush is nice too)

@alwefak@xanga - Why leave a comment saying hi on a blog that's actually for something? Yes, I don't really have an answer to this post, either but I thought I'd just comment on that, haha.

i'm sure your dermatologist told you to watch out for this, but not all mineral makeup is created equal. some contain things that will make you break out more!!! (oh yes, it's true, sadly...)

i use korres ginger & vitamins foundation, but my skin isn't THAT bad anymore, so i'm not sure if it would be too much for your skin, but it is water-based and doesn't have any mineral oil in it.

@chelseanataliex@xanga - haha maybe they're new to xanga? I still lawl when I see people post on revelife, lovelyish, or any other "ish" site saying, "umm... you added me? do I know you?" took me awhile to figure out as well, when I first started xD

I use maybelline mineral makeup and it's pretty good. I couldn't use liquid foundation without looking dry and cakey, and the pressed powder foundation just made me look plain cakey. The maybelline one has a lot of colors and doesn't make me break out like my other ones used to.

  • retardtm@xanga

i use L'Oreal true match minerals.
the brush that comes with them are poor quality, but the make up itself is good.

i just started using bare minerals this summer. LOVE IT. i dont have acne or blemish problems at all so i dont really use it for that reason, its just really nice and i dont have to worry about the occasional break out pimple because it doesn't clog the pores.

my cousin how ever does/did have moderate acne problems. she used to cake on the foundation to cover it up and use the popular pro active formulas. she used it for years and i never saw a difference. strangely enough for a few years she's been using bare mineral foundations and i def. noticed a difference in her acne, whether she's grown out of the acne, or just changing make-ups really did help a lot.

as you are using bare minerals currently (i kind of like bare minerals), i would advise you to STAY AWAY FROM THE MINERAL VEIL. one of the ingredients in the mineral veil is talc, which is known for feeding the acne bacteria. and since you have a skin problem (geez, which one of us dont ;( ), feeding the bacteria wouldnt be the brightest of ideas. hope this helped at least a little bit :). you can always try everyday minerals, but i find their loose powders to be more granular than powdery. but they have a fantastic eye kabuki brush that i just use for a concealer brush! works wonders. but of all mineral coverages, i love the sephora double mineral compact. its a pressed powder, but it provides fabulous coverage. :)

Everyday Minerals! Very affordable, TONS of shades and tones, and a community area to ask for help and compare and such. We also discuss other brands there sometimes. Oh, and I tried Physician's Formula, which I consider total ass by comparison.

I should also add that a good brush makes ALL the difference - having a good brush even with crappy makeup can make it look and feel velvety smooth and look half decent. But a great brush combined with great makeup quality is win-win. Everyday Minerals actually has very affordable ($4-10) brushes that are super, super soft, synthetic (animal-friendly), long lasting, and I just really recommend the brand as a whole. I've been using their products for almost two years. A lot of people who transition over to Everyday Minerals are former Bare Minerals users because they have acne-prone skin and the bismuth oxychloride made them break out very badly, and this is an ingredient EM is free of.

I had cystic acne for a long time (thanks to my dad though), probably between the ages of 14 and 16 when I was drying out my face and using harsh cleansers and toners because they made my skin feel tight and "clean", probably too clean. I changed my regimen around a lot since finding Everyday Minerals and my skin has been clearing up really well since - I haven't had a bout of breakouts in months, maybe one or two blemishes here and there, but NOTHING like it used to be.

I don't use any commercial cleansers, I swear by Chagrin Valley soaps which I use to wash my face once a day - any other wash is just a rinse with water, staying hydrated, moisturizing with jojoba oil, exfoliating regularly, and a dead sea salt scrub once a week has improved my skin a lot.

    @e_L_a_I_n_e_Y@xanga - YIKES! I just bought that :( Oh dear...>_<)

  • rebekah9111@xanga

with my acne free it made my face really really dry so that might be why he told you to throw that away

  • savingeagle@xanga

@rebekah9111@xanga - Oh yeah...I've been taking antibiotics, birth control, AND tazorac for my acne :(. It's almost all gone FINALLY :D. But it is so dry the flakes are the size of mammoths ;(

  • kimmieheart@xanga

i actually like physicians formula. i dont really have bad acne anymore, but back when i used to, physicians formula didn't make it worse unlike other mineral foundations. then again, i was taking medication at the same time... hmmm.

i also like everyday minerals. i love their blushes and their brushes are sooo soft.

  • e_L_a_I_n_e_Y@xanga

@savingeagle@xanga - i havent done much research, but im pretty sure that only the mineral veil will give you problems. all of the other bare mineral products should work just fine! i know because i can't live without my warmth, and it hasnt given me any trouble so far :)

  • mewithoutu77@xanga

only mineral makeup i like is the cover up powder that's all.  i don't like the other products too much.

  • cornyonacob@xanga

i used neutrogena acne free too. except i fail at determining my skin color, so the only thing i got out of buying it was that i now know that my skin color is not beige.

and now i'm using everyday minerals. still working on the samples, and i'm liking it so far.
it hasn't helped the acne though. i'm going to try burt's bees line for that.

i'm allergic to bare minerals.  it made me break out.

  • justifyxme@xanga

I use Everyday Minerals and I love it. I've been using it since I was a freshman in high school and now I'm a senior. They have wide variety of shades to try from... they got ride of the personal sample kits :[ but they have new try me sets...color sets consisting the best of the certain color and you get another kit free. I think you should give it a try (http://www.everydayminerals.com). The coverage is pretty good and you can pick whether you want it semi-matte, matte, intensive..

I know bare minerals has that one ingredient that people are allergic too... EDM doesnt have it.. hm. Though recently I've been looking around other mineral make up brands such as signature minerals and jobba... just trying things out. I love sample kits!

  • BellaGlam

I love the MAC mineral line, the sales people will help you find your perfect color and they have a really wide variety they also have great coverage.
