Life in Magazines VS. My Life
I read Cosmopolitan almost every month and like it, and I sometimes buy other magazines of the same kind (Marie Claire, Vogue...). But I often feel strange after reading this, even if I like it (the funny tone of Cosmo, particularly). I am not living like women presented on their pages.
Buying a dress at 100 euros or shoes at 300, a bag at 500 euros is not cheap for me, it's terribly expensive. Putting on my face an incalculable amount of creams and make up, it's also unthinkable for me (I prefer to use natural bio oils, flower waters and make up animal friendly). I don't have problem with going out without make up, and never go to an esthetic center, and not often to the haircutter.
I don't have Dior, Chanel or Guerlain's stuff and don't want some, don't think it's a "must to have". I don't wear fashion clothes, even if I like to look at fashion (sometimes it is nice, but almost never for me!).
I don't go often to cinema or café, don't go shopping at Lafayette with many friends. I have only one boyfriend and want to marry him, be very attached, so don't want to go out without him and take other boys' phone numbers. I want children before 30 years... and prefer to have a family more than being a stylist, a fashion redactor or a direction secretary.
I don't love cocktails and drink it often (cosmopolitain, mojito, kir...), I prefer a bier! Nevertheless, I like reading this, because it's as if I read a kind of book, and I sometimes get ideas.Do you live like the people presented in magazines? What are your common points and differences with those lives? Do you read these magazines or something similar?

i usually don't read magazines but sometimes they're fun to look at. i definitely don't live like the people in them though.
They're all wearing like...$23840237481023480248371023 clothing. i definitely can't afford things like that. and even if i could..i wouldn't buy it. waste of money.Nice post. I like magazines and I read them often. They are magical worlds of fiction for me, and I just read them to day dream to be honest. I don't take most of what is said too seriously, and I enjoy looking at the pretty pictures. The dating ads bother me because they are so wrong, but I like the oral sex tips ;)
I don't live like the women in magazines, but I do buy the make up!
seventeen mag offers down to earth real prices and coupons. the mag promotes makeup and clothes you can find in any local walmart, target, mall ect. magazines should point towards the general public- whom aren't filthy rich and greedy.
@whisperlights@xanga - Yes! I definitely agree! I do like seventeen for that very reason (though I am about 10 years too old to be reading it). I stick to mags that are a little more reasonable, though, and not 100% about fashion.
I love magazines W, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar etc
but I never read seventeen and cosmo
No offense but the only thing cosmo seems to talk about is sex
seventeen's clothes is just boring
just because I can't afford Jimmy Choo or Balmain doesn't mean that I can't read magazines that show them
I read it because the editorials are inspiring
I LOVE COSMO !!
i definitely dont live like that. my mom once complained that the things in cosmo, vogue, travel and leisure and even people are so expensive, "normal" people could never afford it. ahhh the good ol' american life :)
Yeah, I know how you feel. It almost makes me laugh when I see a special section in a magazine on so-called fashion "steals" and everything on the page is like $200. Lol.
I like Seventeen best. Their clothes and makeup seem the most like something I would actually wear in day-to-day life. Fashion magazines like Vogue feature clothes I wouldn't even begin to touch.
I like reading them sometimes. If you think those clothes are expensive, you should see the catalogue that Saks Fifth sends me every so often, some of those clothes are three times as expensive as a brand new car (no joke). Cosmo always has articles about relationships and sex which I usually don't agree with, so I don't read that much.
It's so true. I read an issue of a magazine and it's like "Shave off your eye brows and eat nothing" Hell no! I like allure. They don't get it 100 percent right but I think that magazine is more in touch with reality.
i hate the messages perpetuated in cosmo. i do like fashion magazines, though.
I'm a guy so that's out of the question for me.
But when I do get the oppurtunity - I read it just to look at the pretty pictures :)
I think people should live the way they want to live..and not trying to imitate an expensive lifestyle they see in a fashion magazine.
We haven't the magazine Seventeen in France (I guess, never see it).
PS :It's my post but the big image of beer, it's not from me ! lol Too many glasses that gave an impression of... don't know, but big contrast with other images (way too much ^^).
I usually only read AP magazine and that's if I feel like paying for it..I mean it's cheaper to get it off the internet. Don't they have their magazines online?
I'm not really like those magazines at all. I don't follow fashion too closely, and wear what I like from the current trends and wear them well past the point of unfashionable. If I like it and feel good in it then I wear it.
@whisperlights@xanga - yeah I agree with seventeen they show clothes that you can buy at your local mall or a walmart but a lot of the time the prices they put on the clothes are expensive -_- to a teenager..but i think that most of the stuff they show in seventeen are on sale most of the time in the stores
That beer looks GOOD! I'm not a cocktail drinker, either.
The jet setter, bar-hopping lifestyle is not the norm, although it is idealized by some youth. And I see fashion (high fashion) as art. And as art, it is not always realistic.
I don't read magazines. I read Lovelyish.
LOL. The only magazine I read is TIME.
I don't read mags. But I will look at it to study the fashion and art and whatnot.
I always see cute items in magazines, but never have I gone out and purchased them. But I like to think that people actually listen to that silly garbage. Sorta like, *so that's how the other half lives*.
Oh, and I subconsciously read this entire post in my mind in a French accent :)
AND! Freida Pinto is sooo pretty. Just sayin'.
In Style is so depressing, you must be like some kind of high up in corporate america to afford the prices! I like glamour and all the recession chic articles in all the mags lately. Thank you for telling me whats good at the drugstore, because, hell not all of us blow $50 or $100 on the newest kitschy eyeshadow quad in a thing that has jewels or looks like a purse. sometimes i just get a general idea of whats hip, like, oh grays and neons are in or whatever.
