I was watching a replay of a WNBA game with my 12-year old cousin. And then he suddenly asked "Are all women basketball players homosexuals?" I knew he was innocent with that question and he meant nothing. So I answered "Of course not! Where did you learn that?" He said "I just think they are. They look like it."
I was scared to probe deeper because after that exchange, I became so frustrated with how strong stereotyping has driven the society. And I find it weird that even kids now are open to these stereotypes. I know that was just a naive comment and I would like to avoid making harsh reactions or make too much fuss over it. But I just can't shrug it off. We all know how small things can lead to greater things. I'm just hoping that whatever it is that needs to be corrected in the society would be corrected soon.

What do you think about female athletes being pre-judged as homosexuals? How do you think we can correct that?

ugh! i hear that stereotype all the time...idk how it even got started, but OF COURSE that's not the case; just like not ALL lesbians are "guyish."
Ha I love how everyone thinks that. @_@
I have never heard that in my life.
Wow. lol. I was racing today (yes, in this heat) and both before and after the race,
guys were taking pictures of me everytime I walked by them - they thought I wouldn't notice but....I'm not stupid
I have always thought there was at least a certain amount of guys who prefer sporty girls though...
I don't think that.... I didn't know anyone did. O_O
i've never heard of the stereotype that female athletes, as a whole, tended to be lesbian.
but softballers are often stereotyped as butchy lesbians. i gotta say though...from what i've seen, that stereotype is about half correct (the butchy half) about 80% of the time. and this is coming from a girl who hangs out with half the jv team and a few of the varisty-ers on a daily basis.
Who the hell thought that?
rofl, I've never even heard that before.
I've never heard that, except for softball. Ha and some guys like sporty girls.
I don't think that everyone thinks that. I know I don't. But stereotypes exist because they are at least partially true. I think it was a fairly innocent question, to be honest.
I don't think it is stereotypical to think that athletes are homosexual. I think athletes adopt attitudes that non-athletes consider homosexual.
Is it really necessary for athletes to pat each other on the butt?
i've never heard that before either..
but i do sports most of the time, and i've never been called a homosexual haha! i guess some people may think that because of how "manly" (shall we say) the women look when they do the sports. like i was watching the triathlon last nigtht, and saw the women on bikes, so i asked my family "are those the men?" and my family were like "yeah!"
then you hear the commentator say "and there goes the ladies" haha!! FML!
If people really believed that a lot more would watch WNBA than already do now.
well, four out of ten young female basketball players call themselves homosexual here in Hong Kong...
well they may not be but ..sighs.. i jus want the videos...
i just think gay men are more girly than most girls.
Sad to say but that shrewd young observer is probably not far from the mark especially when you consider the influences and pressures young women atheletes are subjected to these days starting usually with a rabid dyke coach...
One whose been there raising young atheletic daughters,
Danzr Von Thai
I would certainly say not. I may not be a professional ball player, but I play basketball for high school and I am straight (you can ask my boyfriend.) In fact, I've only known one female athlete in my whole school to be a lesbian.
...I personally think that athletic girls are the hottest around...
I've never heard that before...
Stupid generalizations...
That's like the same stereotype that men who act like girls are ALWAYS gay. Therefore, girls who act like men are also gay. Gosh, I hope they don't spread gay germs to us. -____________-;;;;;;;;;;;
It pisses me off.
Because, oh, I'm sorry they're not wearing tons of makeup to look girly-girly while shooting a game of basketball.
Fucking homophobes. asd;klfja;slfk
I think if you play a sport that's supposedly a "mans" sport then you tend to get stereotyped into being a lesbian. So like if you play rugby, basketball, or do field athletics for example. Whereas if you play "girls" sports you're stereotyped as straight, so if you play tennis or field hockey for example.
I think this is so lame, and also discourages girls in college from joining sports. which is really sad! they are missing out on healthy activity!
lesbians? no way. not every female athlete is a lesbian. i think the problem is they're misunderstood, since they're always about the sport they play, and don't really date, i think that's the problem, but not all female athletes are lesbians.
