Smoking is Cool (And Always Will Be?)

Let me preface this post by saying that I am 100% aware that smoking is terribly unhealthy and has all kinds of dangers to the body, and I would never encourage anyone to start smoking, especially young people.
That said, I think something about the image of smoking is still cool.
It just looks cool. Something about a movie heroine taking a long dramatic drag from a cigarette , or Don Draper on "Mad Men" striking a match for a lady's Marlboro just oozes rebel attitude and old school glamour.
Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe both smoked in many of their movies, often with long cigarette holders and gold lighters that made the activity seem feminine.
Barack Obama has a secret smoking habit (though he admits it's dangerous) that he's kept well-hidden from the press. Rumor has it the president went through packs of nicotine gum every day on his grueling campaign trail. Hey, if I were the most powerful man in the free world, I might need an occasional cig, too!
In the 50s and 60s, smoking inside was entirely legal, and many people chain-smoked to get through their workdays. No matter how much anti-smoking companies may try, I don't think they'll ever be able to stop everybody from smoking.
Again, there is nothing cool about lung cancer and premature aging!! But I still think the simple image of smoking is fascinating in a slick, retro-glam kind of way.

Cancer isn't cool.
Smoking is crap!!!!!!! It kills lots of people i hate smokers! Hate is a strong word! I dis-like smokers!
i don't smoke, but i do love the pictures in this post of the old glamor queens and those long cigs taking a long sexy drag... i'm a horrible person i know, but i think smoking is gross
Do you seriously want your lungs full of smoke and eventually full of cancer ?
Smoking... smells, gives you lines around your mouth, can cause cancer (i.e. an early death, not to mention a large bill if you don't have insurance - great gift to leave your family once you're gone.) Tell me ... how on earth is this "cool"? I agree, it used to be glammed up - but thank God, I think we've moved past that and onto reality ... and I think even less of Obama now that I know he's a smoker (which I heard about *after* he was elected... not that I thought much of him to begin with.) Maybe it's relaxing ... but I can't see how the pros would outweigh the cons. The side effects of smoking ... are never cool, so lifting a lighted stick to your mouth ... doesn't automatically "up" your cool quotient. ::sigh:: I hope the next generation sees this stupid thing wiped out...

i do smoke. and i hate it. starting to smoke was a bad step in my life. now it's really hard to stop, but im trying.the only way to stop smoking is not to start at all.and dont go and tell everybody that it looks cool. coz it isnt.girls who smoke look bad. its funny coz im one of them.

I never ever thought smoking was cool.
Someone once said cigarettes look good in photos. I somewhat agree. It SOMETIMES looks good in photos. Other times, it looks slutty. ><
I think swaggering girls holding bottles of alcohol in photos looks a very trashy and unbecoming though.
But overall, it's still a person's choice! (as long as they are old enough). It is absolutely their right.
I like the smell of cigarettes, honestly.
I don't do it. I took my first, and only drag of one over the summer,
and I didn't see how it was cool. My brother looks like an idiot
when he smokes.
Now weed. That's a different story.
I don't think any of its cool. People do it for their own reasons,
and we can't hate them because they have an addiction.

it looks cool if your an idiot! I love laughing at those addicted smokers all huddling together in sub zero degree weather for their smoke break. Or those cheap ass smokers who actually check out the butts on the floor to see if its still smokeable. Or those who stay stupid crap like smoking calms me, staves away my hunger,.. yah you idiot,.. cuz ur addicted! Crack addicts get a real calm after their hit and yes get the munchies when their off the stuff.
The coolest image and i swear on my life that I'm not making this up,.. is the guy that i took care of in the hospital,.. he was on one to one care because he was very disruptive and a little psycho... we didn't know if the radiation to his head was had crazed him or if he had something we call "diprivan on the brain." I watched him night shift and at 2am in the morning he demanded that we let him go outside to smoke,.. we told him no,. he went crazy yelling " I'M ALREADY DYING FOLKS, YOU CAN'T HELP ME, HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO GIVE UP A 3PACK A DAY HABIT AND DEAL WITH ALL THIS CHEMO!! I JUST WANT THIS TO BE OVER WITH!!" I felt horrible for him, we had to call the doctors and tell him a million times why we couldn't bring him outside till 7am...he stayed up and waited. So cool.
I really don't even care what your true intentions for writing this post because it still sends the wrong message to people,..especially those vulnerable young people on xanga. And 20yrs from now when someone is in deep shit cuz if this cool habit, that one line disclaimer of yours will mean nothing.
And btw,.. what do you think about cocaine use, or heroin use. At one time those use to be legal, and even when they were illegal, when they use to be expensive to obtain it was the cool drug to the elites. Why don't you write a post about this. real sexy.

I am 100% against smoking, although I understand where you're coming from.
It might look cool at first, but is it really worth it? They smell bad (nothing attractive about that), they make your teeth and lips and fingers turn colours and wrinkle and it makes nonsmokers really uncomfortable. I've been recently inspired by OXYGEN Magazine. I am not into have a body that look's like a mans, but wouldn't it be "cool" if our strange ideals for beauty went in that direction instead?

@Deliver_Me_123@xanga - I meant my disclaimer 100%. I don't smoke, and I would discourage people from smoking, and it's basically the most unhealthy and dangerous thing you can do to your own body.
I was simply commenting about the image associated with smoking (e.g. in Mad Men) and that i think it imparts some kind of glamour and cool factor.
Like i said in the post, it is NOT cool to harm your body like that, though.
I agree with the rebellious part because you're not listening to your common sense.

You can eat right, exercise, and take your vitamins but you're still gonna die. In fact, chances seem pretty good these days that'll you'll die from some form of cancer, so you might as well dig your own grave and look cool doing it.
k. obama looks totally lame smoking a cig. seriously. the girls all look great (i'm tempted to exclude kate moss though...) and the other guy just looks normal.
*shrug* the coolness doesn't seem to affect me much.
