  • Happy I'm Nappy: Going Natural for the Summer

I'm mixed. I don't know if you've seen mixed hair, but it varies. My friend has silky curls. I, on the other hand, have this massive afro that gets nappy five seconds after I comb it out. When I was 9 years old, my hair was all natural and halfway down my back. After many years of haircuts and relaxers,  my hair is no longer that length. It's taken me 10 years, but my hair is nearly a quarter down my back. So I've decided to go natural this summer so that my hair has a chance to get even longer!

Today I decided to put my hair in braids because my afro is too much to handle at this length. I looked up different types of African-American braiding and finally decided on kinky twists because they're the most simple and easy to imitate. I've been braiding for an hour now (with some breaks), and I'm not even halfway done. My fingers are killing me, but I like how my hair looks so far.

Does anyone have any hair style recommendations for extremely thick and nappy hair? Any pictures of your first time trying to do kinky twists? Anyone trying to go natural this summer?

My natural hair is long (half way down my back) & wavy black hair. It's not so bad, except I hate leaving my hair out cuz it somehow always gets in my way.
I dont have any suggestions sorry =(

The way the woman in the picture has her hair is absolutely beautiful.  I love it.

I would love to see how your braids turn out when you're done!

Thanks for  subscribing to me. Come by often so I can get to know you. Judi

I don't have any braiding ideas, but my hair is uncontrollably curly as well and I kill it all year but constantly straightening it. This summer, I decided I wanted to grow it out, so I'm giving it a break too. Good luck, hope it grows back!

I would suggest getting on you tube, I'm sure you can find some
really good tutorials and suggestions ^^

I wore corn braids alot as a kid. That's a good way to get your hair to grow but as much as I love braids, I HATE sitting for them. I think it's a cross between sitting so long my butt goes numb & the free eye lift that comes with it.

Weaving can be expensive but it helps your hair grow too & if you get someone who's good, no one will know. I weaved my hair before I moved & I had my hair like that for 2 months & Over the weekend I took it out & came back to school & everyone liked my haircut. LOL

shit im white and my hair is a quarter down my back after cutting it to my ears almost 2 years ago, and i do believe i have the thickest, curliest hair ive seen on a white girl.  now we may have differant hair but when im not wearing mine natural and curley when its all over the place i straighten it with a flat iron and it can stay like that for like 2 days before i have to wash it, im sure something like the twists your doing would deff give you a break though, having to straighten your hair is no fun, anything that'll take all the work out of it i'd do.

I think cornrow braids would look great. They are really worth it, and there are so many styles. Remember to oil your scalp regularly, and you can use Carol's Daughter for treatments which will make your hair more manageable.

So, I looked up the hairstyle, and I really like it. Haha good luck with the braiding; My hair is past my natural waist now, thick and wavy, but I don't do anything but braiding it and leaving it alone.

  • turnyalightsdownlow@xanga

i'm thinking about going natural too. i love Carol's Daughter's mimosa hair honey. it's not too thick but it leaves your hair smelling and looking great.

I don't have suggestions, but I'm rocking braids at the moment, and I could have a few tips to help you take care of them, if you like

There are a TON of websites.

    Try:
    http://motowngirl.com/content/
    naturallycurly.com
    nappturality.com
    http://www.curlynikki.com/
    www.fotki.com
    http://blackgirllonghair.blogspot.com/
    http://www.agrlcanmac.com/
    http://www.coarsehairdiary.com/

These websites/blogs run the gamut of hairstyles to hair products and are VERY helpful! I wish I could go through my list and post my site but I'm studying for two state bars. But if you do want any more suggestions or have questions or ANYTHING, send me a note!

I would love to see your hair after you're done braiding it!  I have always thought natural hair on black women beautiful.  Braids are beautiful too, but not when there are obviously fake tracks in them.

I always wanted to have so called "nappy hair" instead of my straight black hair.

  • KassieintheSkywithDiamonds@xanga

I said I was going to go natural so my hair can grow out...but my straightener seems to cry when I don't use it. I don't wanna hurt the poor thing's feelings.

aww! you are soooo pretty :D

i like your picture above your description and stuff :D

  • mewtini@xanga
I'm mixed too. I always hate it when it rains cause my hair gets frizzy and messed up.I like my hair strait better than curly
  • merquryd@xanga

i went natural a couple of years ago.  i love it but im sooooo lazy and its hard to take care of it or find someone who deals with natural hair.  im trying kinky twists for the first time, except im paying someone else to do it.  you can try a weave...like a sew in.  i got them when i was transitioning.  it was a short and curly one and ppl loved it.  i didn't have to do my hair at all.  It was great.

  • stealingtheory@xanga

    I'm mixed.

My hair is thick and curly, but grows like regular hair--not afro-ish in the slightest. I wear it straight, though, just because it's easier to handle and looks better on me.

  • nylondare@xanga

    haha , nice title .

and i`m the same way (mixed) , but my hair is actually just really really curly , not like afro-ish , ha <3

@aiinos@xanga - it's no problem! thanks for commenting anyway! :) @x_Butterflies_and_Hurricanes_x@xanga - i WISH my hair looked like that lady in the picture lol, if i can figure out how to edit this post, i'll totally put up a picture of my braids. otherwise i can just message it?
@stomachbutterflies@xanga - thanks! good luck to you too!
@stardust_xxx@xanga - i totally checked out youtube so that i could figure out how to braid it, and there's other styles as well so thank you!

@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - i know what you mean about sitting for braids, whenever someone does it for me, I have to take breaks to get rid of the numbness haha. but i think i may try out the weave thing! it could be fun, thanks! :D

@GorJessMommy@xanga - It definitely gets annoying having to straighten your hair (though i don't straighten my hair quite so often, because I don't have to wash it as often) but your hair grew that much in two years? that's so amazing! :D

@write2befree@xanga - I've actually tried cornrows a number of times and i liked it so i'll definitely try it again. but i did have trouble with my scalp so i'll have to try out carol's daughter! thanks!

    @FallenReign@xanga - thank you! :)

@turnyalightsdownlow@xanga - I'll definitely have to try that out! And good luck with going natural! :D

@bitterbittenrockinblonde22@xanga - definitely! Any tips would be more than welcome!
    :D

@NJsNo1DraftPik@xanga - thank you so much for taking time out of studying to give me those links! I appreciate it! and i may have to take you up on that offer! :) GOOD LUCK with the state bar exams!!

@tigerdauphin@xanga - I agree with you completely! it's funny because usually I want my hair to be straight like how you're describing yours. I don't know if I can edit thisand put up a picture of my hair, but if I can't, I can always message you a picture of my braids?

@KassieintheSkywithDiamonds@xanga - haha, I can understand that. My straighten calls out to me sometimes too. But my hair kind of gets frizzy in this summer heat anyway so it's easier to say no to the straightener for now. :)

    @goD_I_V_Aunc10@xanga - Thank You!

@ro_vintage@xanga - I'm going to say thank you and take this compliment even if you're talking about the picture in my post (which unfortunately is not me lol) instead of my profile picture. ^_^

@mewtini@xanga - Me too actually. I hate frizz and whenever it rains I find myself yelling, "MY HAIR!!" lol but I think as time goes on I may like my hair natural more than I like it straight. Who knows?

@merquryd@xanga - I may have to try out a weave, but I don't know yet. I haven't actually gotten to the cut all-my-hair-that-has-chemicals-in-it off stage haha.

@stealingtheory@xanga - My hair grows curly, but once I have to comb it out (no matter how big the teeth of the comb) it just explodes into an afro lol. But I think my hair is easier to handle and looks better straight too. :)

@BellaBacio@xanga - haha thanks. I got it from this bag which my mom gave to me when I was little-- it had a black girl with an afro on it and the words "happy I'm nappy" which I loved. I think my hair may be afro-ish partly due to the fact that I've had it straightened a number of times in the past. Or maybe it's just in my genes? :D

  • ro_vintage@xanga

@ig0tit -  oh no no ahah i was talking about your profile picture lol i just didnt know how to put it together. you know liek say it? ahah ayy ayy. :D

  • ig0tit

@ro_vintage@xanga - haha well then thanks again! :D
