Editor's Note: This entry is a supplement to "Circle Lenses: Would You Try This Trend?"
If you've been on Xanga long enough (or even if you've just started), you would've noticed that there is an
unusually large amount of Asians here (cool!). Many of these Asian girls will have profile pictures that look a little something like this:
At first when I saw these girls, I was shocked. They have HUMONGOUS eyes! Soo scary, but in a cute way. Then I wondered... how come I don't see these people in real life? Where can I find an Asian with huge eyes? (just kidding just kidding just kidding...not really...)
So then, I became engorged into this phenomenon. I found out that these girls were called "ulzzang" by the general public, meaning "best face" in korean (huh?).
It's cute, no? But honestly, if I ever saw one of these girls in real life I think I would
freak out and run to the nearest exit...because it just doesn't look real! So after seeing a whole bunch of photos of these extra cute big-eyed asian girls, I felt inspired.
Hmm...
I'm Asian, they're Asian...
They can do it...so therefore I should be able to do it too!
After doing some
"research" (aka looking through google images...), I have compiled a
list of requirements an ulzzang should have.-big eyes (duh)
-extremely small/disproportional mouths
-cute poses
and....that's basically it!
Soo...this is my attempt at becoming an Ulzzang. normal me. What I look like...
most of the time haha!
After I dowse myself in makeup (it really is necessary)...
white eyeliner on bottom and black eyeliner on top to make my eyes look bigger. And blush. Because cute girls are supposed to blush. duh!
Now the hard part is posing for the picture. Mind you, I had to think ridiculously cute thoughts while doing this. It was...bad.
I changed the coloring in the pictures, because THIS
does not actually look like that in real life.
I messed around with the settings and found that increasing the
gamma (?) and the
contrast (?) did a pretty good job.
I needed part of my hello kitty collection to fuel the fake cuteness. The posing is pretty simple, actually. There is only one rule:
KNOW YOUR ANGLES.hello kitty kleenex dispenser!
The generic angle is achieved by placing the camera at a
45 degree angle above your eye level...and looking up at the camera. (
what a nerd...).
It's is very similar to the
infamous Myspace Angle, except that in myspace angle photos, there's supposed to be a hint of sexy in them...in ulzzang photos, they aren't supposed to have any hints of sex in them,
unless you think cute little girls are...sexy.
Also, posing with random objects is highly popular. Making weird hand signals are also cool too. There's a boundary between cute and scary...and I totally just crossed it.
I'm not cut out for this
'Ulzzang' thing.
I applaud the many thousands of boys and girls that ARE; you people truly inspire me ever single day.
But for now, I think I'll just stick to staying myself.
What do you think Lovelyish readers: was it really a Ulzzang fail?

girl, you're eyes are huge. no ulzzang-ing for you, you put the rest of us small eyed asians to shame T_T
LMAO. i enjoyed this post ! thank you very much dear. :]
There are ulzzang guys? What do they look like?
Why the Hell would anyone want to look like that? Sure, you'll say I'm just a little girl.. well, Chucky was just a doll..
Haha, you're so cute! But uh, I actually never heard of that before. Certainly explains things.
I was once on sidereel and got directed to an asian side for a video. Next to the video there were commericals with Asians looking like...this. It really scared me at the first moment. It's just not natural.
haha this was funny
Your eyes are big for an Asian but they are natural and you look way cuter than the ulzzzang ones in the photos you have above :)
Aww... you're so cute. You're way better than ulzzangs. They all look the same!
I'm Korean and I've seen this far too many times to count. It makes me laugh.
At least though this isn't permanent unlike ssangapeul surgery. Or nose jobs.
They all look like the stupid cartoon cat.
haha..acturally most of those Ulzzang pics are photoshoped.
so, maybe a software is better than the con lense, fake eyelashes, or any others things to attempt to be an Ulzzang.
nice attempts
i knew that pic looked familiar :) - http://members.asianbeautyblog.com/entry/Incandescent/64123-Ulzzang-Makeup-Magic.html
glad you didn't bother with the eyelid glue or hair haha. i've always wondered how long it'd take to do that every single day ugh ..
You forgot to mention they use photoshop, like you have.
& they usually have done up hair with heavy bangs.
well, I just see it as a trend...
At least in my case I don't see it increasing the sexual appeal in a girl when ulzzang is thrown in. There's a difference between pretty, hot and cute.
-cute makes you want to hug it
-pretty makes you want to own it
-hot makes you want to do it
If it DOES increase a guy's sexual attention (the ulzzang), I would suspect a particular fetish to break a girl's [perceived] innocence. Borders on the pedo~
You're hilarious, Noreen!!
I got a few of those contacts in Taiwan last winter. My boyfriend was not a fan.
that makes me a non-ulzzang asian then hahahahaa
you look fine the way you are (:
very cute ,
but for this ulzzang look , i think you're missing false lashes
and maybe highlight and contour colours for eyeshadow and face ,
Hahah ... that's awesome.
@pudgypaw@xanga - agreed! (the pedophilia part.)
I want a cool Hello Kitty tissue dispenser.
hey i have those eyes on my pic!
^___^
i dunno i love these contacts.
I like the ulzzang look. It's really cute... in a sick, pedophile sorta way.
I don't think you fit the whole ulzzang look though :p
But that's not a bad thing. You look cute, but not scary cute. Lol.
You've turned this post into your a collection of your pictures. Sigh.
I've read about those contact lenses. They're not like the normal ones that the doctors advised. Actually, these kind of "Ulzzang" are strongly discouraged to wear, because it wouldn't last long and can causing tearing in the eyes and other minor effects. However, I've seen some girls wore this in real life. It doesn't look that tacky. It was just... really dark and...fake. Well, or course.
