British GQ Calls Beth Ditto a Fat Lesbian
I was recently on one of my favorite websites, fashionista.com, when I came across this excerpt about Beth Ditto.
“Beth Ditto is a fat lesbian. She’s also a fashion “icon”. Hilarious, isn’t it? I love fashion people, I really do. They’re so… how do I put this? Stupid? Yes, that’s it. They’re so stupid. Here’s what happened: stung by criticism of their unhealthy obsession with rexy supermodels, they hit back by lionising a pathologically exhibitionist 16 stone woman from Arkansas. Clever, huh? That’ll get the feminazis off their case. How can anyone say they only promote thin women when they are so enamoured with a porker like her?”
Dude.
That quote was actually taken from Alex Bilmes, Features Director of British GQ. He dedicated a whole post to Ditto. How lucky is she?!
While I happen to agree with what he's saying, what does Ditto's sexual orientation have to do with anything? Was it really necessary to be that cruel about it? What do you think Lovelyish readers?
P.S. and he dissed The Gossip

For someone who owns a magazine, they are a complete asshole.
how rude
The writer of the article is probably a closet "fat lesbian."
That was uncalled for. Her weight doesn't make her ugly, and her sexual orientation has nothing to do with her style.
okay, if it weren't for Beth Ditto calling Karen O a conventional beauty for basis of the YYYs success, i'd be moawr supportive at the moment...
still
Listen Up! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vYmWg1vHeU
Even it if it was true it was still rude.
she is a fat lesbian, so am i.... big deal.
@mr_faust@xanga - Whaaat Karen O is not a conventional beauty
Not a perfectly pretty face/body. Crazy and awesome with sex appeal, but not conventional beauty.
replace "conventional beauty" for "thin" in her comment and it would be closer to what she meant... they're both exihibitionists.
lol
why is everyone so serious~~~
:3
I guess he thinks lesbian is an offensive term. It doesn't matter to me her sexual orientation. I don't think she looks like a fashion icon. Her hair in that picture is disastrous.
i'll agree, she's pretty huge and that dress doesn't do a thing for her, but making fun of her sexual orientation is uncalled-for.
that's just mean.
Wait. She is a fat lesbian.
What's wrong with being a fat lesbian?
It's pretty much like telling me that I'm an Asian girl. Wow, that's right. Okay, so what?
People can be so mean.
So what if she is what she is?They still don't have to be completeWho is she...?
who's being cruel about it?
she IS a fat lesbian.
or if you prefer, a big boned homosexual lady.
or, you know, a not-skinny girl who likes girls.
who is she?
xo
she's fat for sure, but the comment was uncalled for, and he made it sound like it was bad to be lez
her orientation doesn't have anything to do with her style or fashion. but how is it cruel to mention it? the only people who think that calling a homosexual female a "lesbian" is derisive are those who think the term "lesbian" is somehow insulting.
she's fat and she's a lesbian, hence "fat lesbian."
before you write off mr. bilmes as "cruel," i think its only fair that you read what follows the above quote:
"The fact that Beth Ditto is morbidly obese, and therefore arguably just as bad an example to young women as a girl ten stone lighter than her, seems to have escaped their notice. Meanwhile, girls who fall between the two extremes - pretty much every vaguely healthy woman on the planet - are still routinely dismissed as being not interesting or beautiful enough to be photographed for a women's magazine."
spot on.
Wow, what an ass.
but i'm pretty sure she IS a fat lesbian.
There's nothing wrong with stating that she's gay and that she's bigger than average (other than stating the obvious), but saying it like it's an insult is really rude. Besides, size and sexual orientation have nothing to do with her as an icon, nor with her style.
I can't believe this man (or his magazine) is taken seriously.
That was rude of him to say especially because he is part of a very big magazine, that said I don't know why ANYONE would call Beth Ditto a fashion Icon. I weigh about as much as her and I don't go around wearing skimpy outfits and bikini tops (one thing she is known for when performing). I don't like Beth Ditto, I think her attitude towards herself and others is so unbecoming.
Ugh I can't stand Gossip Girl :P and I can see his point; overweight and extremely underweight women shouldn't be fawned over, both are bad.
@Jenna - YES, sister. I was going to say the exact same thing. She IS a fat lesbian. hahahaha. Thank you.
she's fat and she's lesbian so.... she's a fat lesbian right? she claims to be one everywhere. she's proud of her (and she's right)
It's not a big deal really. I don't think that calling her "lesbian" is cruel"...
