Why I Don't Like American Apparel Ads
If you buy a flute, you own a flute. So why is it that when you buy a camera, you're a photographer?
I like American Apparel. There’s one about to open on Grafton Street in Dublin, and I’m looking forward to having somewhere to buy my basics. But the one thing that has always put me off are the store's ad campaigns:

The lookbook shots are tacky and poorly taken, the lighting is awful, and many of those girls should not be wearing those outfits!
It actually makes me uncomfortable to look at them. I can see where they’re coming from: real girls in real clothes and all that. But I avoided the store for a long time because of the slutty-and-tacky-fashion-victim factor.
There have actually been times where I’d look at something in the shop and say, "Oh there’s a possibility", and then I see the modeled picture beside it and be completely put off the purchase!
I’ve come across tons of fashion blogs where the authors photograph their own outfits in basic, beautiful shots that make me want to buy the clothes off their backs! So why can’t a big chain store manage that?
I don't know, they’re fairly popular so maybe it’s just me with the problem.
What do you think? Are the American Apparel ads catchy or tacky?

Who cares?
They're too overpriced; a basic t-shirt costs more than a pack of t-shirts at Target or Wal-mart. Plus their ads are cheap, they look like MySpace porn, and its just like wtf. :p
@swtaznxtc90@xanga - I like some clothes from AA, but I agree, they are extremely overpriced. I mean a "basic t-shirt" is like, 30 dollars. I normally eBay something if I like it.
hate the ads.
I like most of the American Apparel ads. But I also have an extremely strange taste in...everything :] .
The American Apparel ads are targeted to the same people who make the clothes...hipsters. No one else. That is how hipster society works. And there are enough of them to keep this business afloat. The tacky lighting, the curvy models, the dumb looks on their faces. Its all tacky. A lot of the clothes are, too. And if you know any hipsters, you'll know that they loooooove tacky. They eat that shit up. They also love trashy. Hence the term "hipster trash."
I think American Apparel is sucessful only on the basis that it is run by hipsters for hipsters. I mean all it is is overpriced teeshirts, leggings, and underwear in various shades and pigments and sequins. There is nothing special about the clothes. They are just hip. Thats why hipsters buy them.
@godless_wench@xanga - The point of blogging is to blog about shit that no one cares about and make it interesting. You're missing the point. Obviously lots of people care because there are over 200 comments and she is featured on the Xanga home page.
oh my, i'm not the only one thinking this? i absolutely love their clothes when i go to the store and see them but online they always look awful because of how things are worn and who's wearing them and whatnot
awfully tacky.
& also exspensive
@JordanSchroeder@xanga - perfectly put,
I HATE American Apparel adds......... I would never be caught dead in that clothing. Just say no to leggings, ladies!
AA is a lil expensive for me...but maybe thats their way of standing out.. *shrugs*
A friend of mine had a 6 month modeling contract with american apparel and stopped midway through because she and her mom realized that their company is filled with creepy ass old guys trying to get into young girl's pants. Gross!!
plain stuff..overpriced...$8 for a plain dog shirt? really? REALLY?
Obviously since American Apparrel is a popular successful store, the ads are working for them. Since "typical models" aren't being used, average people are more appealed to buy their clothing. Well most people lol.
@prototype_abbeyancyF7@xanga - I don't understand why people keep saying the models are unsuitable for the clothing? I mean... they're skinny, teenage-looking girls. It's what every female wants to look like.
But I agree, the photography itself is horrible.
l am a honest and romantic girl, l am also a good listener and i want a man that can love me for real a man i can share my true love with. you can email or chat me with this yahoo id: margaretkbw1@yahoo.com or margaretkbw1@hotmail.com
i dont like them. theyre trashy.
A lot of people here seem to be arguing that they employ plus size and curvy models...
I've yet to see a single model on that site, even in the plus size area, look anything but anorexic. They employ stick thin models and ask them to pose in underwear (which looks awkward to us, because runway models are stick thin but underwear models are usually thin but curvy). They employ models with less than beautiful faces. But they do not support healthy weight as the average.
i love amap!<3
I think the tackiness and sluttiness of the advertisements is like an advertising gimick. The demographic is young adults, 18-24, who can wear things that aren't completely attractive because of their youth and beauty. And I think these ads appeal to that sense. Of being a little tacky, because the models are attractive enough to pull it off. Having poor lighting, because they're hot enough to pull it off. Thats what I take from it. When I wear american apparel, i get this sense that because I'm wearing it, I can pull off whatever I want.
I love American Apparel, but the whole using immigrants in their factories and underage half-naked models thing kind of puts me off.
I despise american appearl!!
All the girls in their ads are laying in beds posing half naked with the sheets all messed up like they are about to get raped.. mind you this is on in the newspaper for young kids to see.. doesn't give a good impression..
agreed,
