  • Why I Don't Like American Apparel Ads

If you buy a flute, you own a flute. So why is it that when you buy a camera, you're a photographer?

I like American Apparel. There’s one about to open on Grafton Street in Dublin, and I’m looking forward to having somewhere to buy my basics. But the one thing that has always put me off are the store's ad campaigns:

The lookbook shots are tacky and poorly taken, the lighting is awful, and many of those girls should not be wearing those outfits!

It actually makes me uncomfortable to look at them. I can see where they’re coming from: real girls in real clothes and all that. But I avoided the store for a long time because of the slutty-and-tacky-fashion-victim factor.

There have actually been times where I’d look at something in the shop and say, "Oh there’s a possibility", and then I see the modeled picture beside it and be completely put off the purchase!

I’ve come across tons of fashion blogs where the authors photograph their own outfits in basic, beautiful shots that make me want to buy the clothes off their backs! So why can’t a big chain store manage that?

I don't know, they’re fairly popular so maybe it’s just me with the problem.

What do you think? Are the American Apparel ads catchy or tacky?

I personally don't like american apparel =\ it's really expensive

2nd and 4th picture are alright. The other two are lame and ugly. I think they could do a lot better. Have some nice backgrounds and make better choices in the outfits.

well in my opinion, it all depends on the stores.
many stores to the opposite of average girls, and they overdo it with gorgeous models and incredibly thin people etc. etc.

but i think it's a bit of a stretch putting "average" people in clothes and accessories that they wouldn't wear. if you're going to put an "average" person in it, put them in something that's likely for them to wear.

I really like their ads. They use a variety of body shapes and sizes. They don't have a problem putting larger, more voluptuous women in sexy clothes. It's eye-catching and, yes, catchy.

sometimes the ads are tacky and others are catchy. american apparel is taking a risk, and that's awesome. they like to live on the line of creativity. and that's pretty alright with me,
i like some of their clothes... but it can get expensive. but i have to drive about two hours to the closest one, which kind of sucks.

i dont like american apparel stuff - its too wacky for me

  • goblinsinthemirror@xanga

I love the purple dress, but I agree - those models look bored and not very "fierce."

  • dictionary____dreams@xanga

    american apparel's stuff is ugly.

    just sayin'.

and why is the first lady doing the crab walk?

    xD

they're a bit of both. i mean the clothes are alright but they aren't the best and the models just don't sell it as they should.

If a picture makes you feel anything...its a good one. So hate it up, but that is what it's purpose really is: Doing something different to grab attention. How many overly perfect models are suppose to catch our attention these days?
I personally hate the pictures/models but it makes a great advertisment.

I completely agree with you. I was on the website just yesterday and I thought the exact same thing about the way the clothes were photographed. (It's great that they use employees and models of more realistic sizes because it gives you a better idea of what you'd look like in them. )To me their low budget approach to photographing their clothes mostly comes off as trashy and unwearable or as a hipster who is trying too hard. I'd like to think it's intended to cut the cost of the clothing but it must not be because a lot of it is still far too expensive.

Those would be infinitely better if they had a background of some kind.

  • Southeast_Beauty@xanga

I never was a fan of their clothes or their ads.

  • DOAFA@xanga

it's just the way aa has always been.  i don't see the problem with it...?

  • aiinos@xanga

    I see them as tacky.

  • sophixc@xanga

I think they're absolutely tacky and most of the time, extremely unappealing.

american apparel ads have always creeped me out because some of them are taken in someone's messy bedroom.  It just creeps me out and makes me feel like I'm looking at something I shouldn't be looking at.  But, I still love the stuff for staples and cool thigh high socks.  It's quite pricey though. =\

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

i think the ads are tacky, too. often the outfits don't flatter the model at all. the clothes are decent, but i have social objections to american apparel.

i've also heard from people working with them that the photographer is kind of a lewd fellow.

"If you buy a flute, you own a flute. So why is it that when you buy a camera, you're a photographer?"

if you buy a flute then you own a flute. if you buy a camera then you own a camera.
if you use the flute then you're a musician. if you use a camera then you're a photographer. (:

Too tacky and trashy! You should not be able to see rolls on a model like that. That's just poor stance. Their clothes are not worth the price and disgust I procure from their ads. I'd rather buy a basic at Target than shop here.

  • Nope_Ive_Never@xanga

Their ads have always bothered me. I think it is the strange poses mostly.

  • kaybaby666@xanga

I hate their ads! They make me really uncomfortable for obvious reasons (I believe anyways). I've heard that the photographer for American Apparel based on Toronto is a perv which is why I have to see half naked women everywhere!

I don't like the clothes anyways.

  • prototype_abbeyancyF7@xanga

American Apparel pictures (I refuse to call them "photography") are terribly tacky and half the models are terrifically unsuited for the clothes they're wearing. I remember the first time I entered the AA website after hearing about it from so many people. I took one look at the pictures of the girls modelling the clothing and went "Wait, are these supposed to be professional?"

I'm pretty sure it's their attempt at being "indie" and "cynically ironic." It's ugly, and it's just as classless as the "photography" albums they sell where half of the pictures inside feature black-and-white breasts and naked people. Ooh, original.

  • princess_riceball@xanga

I've never been in an American Apparel store, that I can remember, so all I really know of them are the ads and images on the website.  I've seen many blogs speaking highly of the clothes but when I look at the website I hate everything, and I think it might be because of the photos of the clothes.  They could be great in real life but the ultra slutty poses and the idea of wearing t-shirt two sizes too small with no pants kind of puts me off.
