  • Would You Buy Vintage Online?

Shopping for vintage clothes is very hit or miss. You need an open mind and lots of energy for the digging, the digging, the digging through racks and piles for pieces that are decent quality and the right size. Now, I'm all about unique pieces and extending the life span of perfectly good garments just makes sense (especially when they're cute!), but I sometimes wish the process was a bit more streamlined. And then a solution was presented: online vintage shops.

Shopping vintage online with sites like Bleubird and Nasty Gal (which also has really trendy new clothes and accessories) makes the sifting process so much easier. With a scroll of the mouse, you can pass by the inevitable "should have stayed in grandma's closet" pieces and lock on the must-haves. In order to avoid fit and quality questions, many shops like these will post the size on the label and what they estimate the label, and not to mention a ton of measurements, fabric type, and a description of its condition.

Sound too good to be true? It may be. True to vintage shopping, there is usually only one of each item, and many of the items on the sites are marked "sold" or "on hold" to tease those who fall in love with them. And despite all of the sizing details, let's face it: a ton of us have no clue what our measurements are and usually stick to a guessing game when it comes to size. Nasty Gal, for one, has a no return policy for their vintage goods. It's understandable, but I hate getting stuck with clothes I ordered online and don't like!

What do you think of online vintage shopping?

i would consider it, but i like being able to try things before buying them. because the items are older, i also want to check for rips or stains. vintage stores often don't take returns (or have a really stringent return policies).

    i would totally do that.

(wait, no. i would totally do that if i had money.)

I do buy vintage clothes, but when I do, I buy them off eBay (I'm not ashamed!) because I can normally get a good deal by bidding haggling down the buy it now price.

Maybe. To me, the point of buying vintage clothes is that they're cheap and attractive. I'm not about to pay $100 for a dress online.

I usually tried to avoid shopping online for clothing.  It may look good in the picture, but I might not like how it looks on me.  Plus, I don't want to deal with measurement problem because I do not know which size fits me the best.  Every company's shirt, dress, and pants size varies from each other.

    i would! i love vintage items....they are so.....vintage!

it really depends on what you mean by vintage. do you mean clothing that is considered vintage because of its look or vintage as in something that was created a while back and now decided to get rid of it and put it up for sale? if were to purchase vintage items, i would purchase them off of ebay or i would go to a vintage clothing shop on my own instead. i would need to make sure the items fit (seeing as ordering offline, you would be just guessing) and i would need to make sure they are not ripping me off into thinking that this item really was vintage when it actually wasn't. then again, i don't really purchase anything that is vintage but i have thought about it before. alot of my friends do and end up purchasing a few items that cost way more than what i would pay for something that was brand new. so needless to say, if i did start shopping for vintage, i would take my chances going through racks after racks instead of just trusting that the items would fit and that they are indeed vintage.

I've been looking at Vintage shoes on ebay and i have my eye on a few pairs.  I recently bought a vintage Dooney & Bourke purse also.  I'm iffy about buying clothes online in general just because I'm not sure about my measurements but if I find something I really love, I'll make the effort to make sure it fits properly.

    Take your mesurements.
    Voila.

i have hd good luck with buying vintage online, i recently bought a dress and it was only 15 and it is super cute! :) I usually buy off ebay vintage sites

Especially with vintage things, I would much rather see it in person so I can surmise myself the condition and agreeableness of the piece.

  • TheScaleDiaries@xanga

Maybe, but it'd be risky. I think I'd prefer seeing it in person and trying it on first to be perfectly sure. The only things I've ever bought online were heels, Halloween costumes, belly rings and a few clothes from DHStyles.com ...I love some of their shirts and dresses, way cute!

i ALWAYS buy vintage online. however, i usually do it on ebay. there are a lot of good vintage deals there. my entire spring/summer wardrobe is comprised mostly of vintage sundresses and i bought a lot of them online for less than $20 each. plus, i always have fun looking through the auctions.

  • furtherthoughts@xanga

of course. Just ask questions before buying the item.. haha

  • SoHoian_NightOwl@xanga

nope. i'm going back to london to buy my vintage, it's so much more worth it! Or at least somewhere in Europe where vintage doesn't cost an arm and leg.

I dont really buy vintage things. If I do, I want to see it in person... texture, anything wrong with it etc.

  • silentescape__x@xanga

I'd love to try that, but I can imagine myself getting frustrated when I find something really cool and someone snags it before I get the chance to. Old fashion thrift store shopping is the best way to go. It makes you feel really good when you snag something totally awesome that someone either missed or turned down. I once found a brand new t-shirt that I absolutely feel in love with that was sold for $4. It looked like it might have been originally sold for a lot more. Plus, it was a brand that I had never heard of.

For vintage garments, I usually shop at etsy.com. etsy is a great site with a lot of vontage garments. and the best thing is each buyer give you the measurements of the garments you are looking at. you should check it out.

  • journalofsparkles@xanga

I'm a bit hesitant to purchase clothes online. I like to know how it fits on me before I purchase the item.

  • UnopenedSuitcases@xanga

i like the idea, but i still like the idea of going there and trying it on for myself better
