Don't Label Me!
I was sitting on my computer chatting with my friends when some person came on saying they hated 'emo' kids. They took one look at my picture and said 'I hate you'. I was shocked. I had asked why and they said because I was a whiney emo kid. Okay let me get something straight, 'emo' kids are just over-emotional whether it's in anger, sadness, or even happiness.
Yes, there are happy 'emo' kids. 'Emo' kids do not always cut themselves. That's a streotype.
Also, don't call someone a poser just because the way they dress. There can be 'emo' kids who don't cut themselves. Think about everyone who is 'emo' but some are more than others. We all have emotions right? So don't streotype people by the way they dress or the music they listen to. Labels are the reason why somethings are the way they are. Maybe you should not to judge people until you get to know them. Maybe that might reduce bullying.
What do you think of stereotypes? Have you ever been a victim of one?

I've been a part of almost every social group at one point or another in my life, so I've been stereotyped so often that I generally don't pay attention to it. Being told that you are hated just because of the way you look is ridiculous!
blah blah blah
it's a natural instict to make judgements based on appearance
if you take it so personally, maybe you should change the way you look
otherwise, be prepared for any ignorant or justified judgements stemming from your self expression
People are going to always judge you either based on your race, religion/beliefs, and/or your appearance. If you're so bothered by how people judge you because they think you're emo, either change your style/how you look or deal with it and don't complain about it.
I really don't like the term "poser". In fact, I hate it. Who are we to decide what or who someone else is, and whether they are a "real" (insert group here)? That's so silly.
The main time I get stereotyped is for being North American and living in South America. I've noticed people tend to assume I don't speak Spanish just because of how I look, or that I don't speak Spanish very well, when in fact I am quite good at Spanish. I hate it when people speak really slowly to me because I happen to have light skin and blue eyes and reddish hair.
I'm stereotyped and profiled when I walk into stores. There's nothing that I can do about it. Well, I could DECK them but it would do nothing for the stereotype.
I can't change being black.
honestly, I used to be a stereotype. When you dress the same way as an indie/emo/preppy whatever kid, that's how you're going to get lumped, and people are going to talk about you. You really have to develop your own style. but that all comes with time and maturity. Plus, mean comments help make a thick skin.
@imissyousofarr@xanga - i love this comment! your very right!
stereotypes are usually based in fact...
...prove us wrong! your about me isn't doing much for the cause. :\
voice is something everyone has. if you let it, it can help to define you. whether you sound like an old man or a six year old, it's part of who you are.
looks are another thing i believe falls under that same definition.
to be judged and then labled based off of looks and voice, is something i would have to say unfair and irrelevent, as a poor judge of character.
I believe in labels. Without them there would be chaos. For instance, I'm sure you label yourself either male or female, whatever your age is, or a number of other things such as American or British.
Emo is just a label as much as one's age is. I for one, label myself goth because I listen to goth music.
Stereotypes are bad for obvious reasons, but labels do not equal stereotypes.
the person was being a little ignorant for saying something like that but labels are a convieniant way to describe the way someone looks.
I sometimes have to revert to calling someone punk or preppy just to describe how they look to someone. it's just a simple way of describing a persons style or appearance. I'm sure you do the same. labeling isn't always a bad thing.
dont get so offended next time. be proud of who you are.
Oh, yeah. I was a "prep" before I got all depressed and bitter about life, so I started dressing darker and more "gothic". I've been called either a poser or a true goth since, although I quit wearing black nail polish and took a turn towards more color in my wardrobe lately.
I hate stereotypes too. You can be whatever you want to be . I like emo kids because they are very passionate and I like that , plus they tend to be very artistic :)
Don't change your look for anyone . If people give you grief for how you dress , ignore them because those who treat you poorly or judge you aren't worth it . Remember to always stay true to your self !
Yeah, a certain race of people think that people with brown skin are from Mexico and speak Spanish. Sorry, I'm not from mexico and I don't speak Spanish
my other two cents on the whole "emo" matter though is just that the whole "emo" label just leaves a bad taste in my mouth ... no matter who you are.
"emo" is not a way to describe someone.... maybe several years ago it was a fad to call someone or yourself that but I feel like it got so old that it faded away and I liked that it did.
the only time I want to hear the word emo is if it's describing a music genre... never to describe a person. it just annoys me when I see it used in that context.
@imissyousofarr@xanga - I actually laughed out loud when I read your comment. I agree.
I think emo-looking and dressing girls look really awesome and I have always wanted to be one but it would look ridiculous on my body type. (5'10" with big boobs) hahaha.
Girl, be proud!
Stereotypes are usually based in some truth..
I've been kicked out of two stores and told I couldn't shop at those places because of my ethnicity in the past three weeks.
Umm yeah I'm Chinese so apparently in sports I am doing some crazy Mathematical equations to give me the edge. Pretty sick if I could. =(
ohh i hate stereotypes. i always have to go through some at least every year, many people do.. but it taught me how to ignore those people who always label each other. it can be very harsh if you're the victim, but just forget what people judge on. it's pointless to let your guard down for a nonsense comment..
i despise it when people label me , but this is a free country and people are bound to do it - like it or not !
my friends and i were called "gothic" in 8th grade because we listened to Linkin Park, shopped at Hot Topic and liked the color black. it made me laugh and laugh. :P people are always going to have their own opinions and thoughts about each other. but as corny as it sounds, what really matters is what you think about yourself. i didn't give a shit when the whole grade started giving my friends and i crap. it bothered me at first, but i got over it and ignored them. stereotypes will always happen though, unfortunately.
omg this sounds so middle school. those terms were terms we used back in the day!
wow.
honestly i have been OVER that stage for a very long time now...but I do agree that stereotypes are annoying and it often makes some kids not want to be who they really are because of the stigma some stereotypes have...i.e emo goth but then also it causes drama within groups because kids are now forced to choose where they belong.
like they can no longer just be themselves...they have to choose what the prefer n be part of a LABEL. which I find so stupid. but we were all that young once and stupid so I guess i dont have much room to talk...
but to be perfectly honest even though i wanted to be in the "preppy" group I never really caved in, I just did my own thing and in the end I turned out to be fine. I learned to be myself and not depend on a group of fake friends/
@mycontinuity@xanga - that's crazy! what stores, and what ethnicity are you? shame on them
people are going to label you all of your life. it's something you have to get used to no matter how much it sucks.
