Trying To Keep Funky Hair Dye In Longer

Okay so my hair is Manic Panic's Hot Hot Pink color and for the longest I've been trying to figure out a way to keep it in longer. I had tried everything: (1) Adding vinager (don't do it, dogs will try to eat you), (2) leaving it to sit over night, and (3) straightening it while the dye was in and nothing worked. It seemed like every other week I was putting dye in. Then one day I remembered what my aunt said may work, mixing hair conditioner and hair dye.
Well it worked! I'll tell you the steps:
1. Get the hair dye of your choice of any brand (works best with Manic Panic).
2. Get a 8 oz. liquid applicator bottle (it works best for roots but you can also use a cup or bowl).
3. Put as much hair dye in it as you need (leave room for to mix the conditioner) and add some conditioner (make sure it's not too much).
5. Make sure it has a creamy look to it.
6. Apply it to selected the area and let it sit for a few hours. It won't damage your hair.
7. Wash it. If you pay attention, you'll notice there's barely any dye coming out. That's because it absorbed it along with the nutrients from the hair conditioner.
8. Final result, it should last a while.

OK, fine, it has conditioner in it too - but HOW could having hair dye on your hair for several *hours* before you wash it out NOT hurt your hair? I don't understand this ... it sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Well, that's great to know!
I used to work at a Professional Hair Salon and we've got different techniques for hair dyeing processes.
Although I'm not so sure about mixing normal conditioner with hair dye, it might cause the hair to fall out, I guess it depends on different people and the condition of their hair, but the best way to make semi - permanent hair color last longer is to use Color treatment shampoo, it allows the hair to soak in and not wash out as easily. Or just do the usual and skip using hair products, and just use conditioner on your hair till about 2 days later. By that time, the color should be set into your hair :)
it works if you're a punk rocker and dont care about healthy hair
i rather go to a beauty salon
you should try switching to the brand special effects instead of manic panic.
the manic panic type dyes are NOT like regular dyes
they are vegetable based dyes that are much less harsh and much weaker then normal colour hair dyes
anyway, i'm not the sure the conditioner trick will work with every type of conditioner...manic panic dye sets better in your hair in an acidic environment, so you can either rinse with vinegar or make sure you're not using a pH balanced conditioner/shampoo
usually to keep the color in:
dont use hot water, buy salon shampoos or go to a beauty supply for colored hair shampoo. store brought shampoos from walmart, target, etc strip away color whether it says for colored treated hair or not
but if u like the red i suggest you use l'oreal hicolor hightlights. its a perm. color so itll stay longer than the semi and it gives a deeper red
it's bound to fade out... color treated hair shampoo should help out. & washing the hair every other day... i have funky colors on my hair, blue-green, pink & purple. lasted pretty long.. although its fading a bit now. Going to color it again later. after all those colors are semi permanent.
@Passionflwr86@xanga - Manic Panic dye doesn't work the same way as regular hair dye from the grocery store. It's a special formula that basically just stains the hair. There isn't a natural chemical match-up to get hot pink hair, or electric blue. It's safe to leave in because it doesn't contain any drying chemicals or formulas like ammonia.
This article doesn't really apply to most hair dyes, which are specially formulated to work around a certain block of time before becoming damaging. What you did say in this article works extremely well with Manic Panic and Special Effects hair dyes. Thanks for the tips- if I ever feel like putting some funky streaks in my hair again, I'll take your advice.
Oh! That's interesting. Also, did you bleach your hair before you dyed it? I find that hair dyes don't work for my dark hair most of the time..
Coconut is moisturising and aroma is great!
While I agree with this, Manic Panic in general just washes out quickly. Try Special Effects instead.
i don't think mixing conditioner with it will make it last longer.
That would pretty much just thin out the color, so you're putting less of it on your hair.
I used to use manic panic, and I wold leave it on over night.
I only washed my hair every 2 or 3 days, and in cool water.
It usually lasted me 2 weeks, maybe 2 1/2, , but that's really all you can expect from semi-permanent color.
and make sure you're using color care shampoo, and try not to use any products with alcohol in them.
this may sound dirty, but if you left your hair dirty for about 3 days without a wash so that your natural hair oils can build up, the colour tends to stay longer in your hair too. dun ask why, i wouldn't know...but it does work
I love suave, in general. it makes my hair smell so nice and it keeps it so so so soft. i love that kind espeically, its the best !
awesome! i have to keep re applying manic panic's purple haze but ill try this tomorrow. sounds good!
Manic Panic? Puhleeze.
Haha, no really though, it's a decent hair dye, but my favorite is Punky. It is a lot thicker and has conditioners already in it so that it lasts longer and gives really gorgeous color. I used to have to buy it online, but now that I don't dye my hair those colors, they have it at Hot Topics around here.
