  • School Uniforms: Positive or Pointless?

There is always the controversy over the idea if schools should require their students to wear a uniform. Currently, in my school, we do not have to wear one.

If I had to wear a uniform, as long as it was not completely ridiculous looking, I wouldn’t mind wearing it.  However, if I were to wear one, I would want the ability to be able to accessorize it the way I would like.  I would love to doll it up possibly with some studded belts, bows, and maybe even one of my Gir necklaces.

    The Ups:

    ·         No one can judge each other on what they wear.

    ·         You wouldn’t have to take the time to choose an outfit out in the morning.

    ·         You don’t have to put up with others dressing in an overly-exposed manner.

    The Downs:

    ·         You don’t have the freedom to wear what you desire.

    ·         The overall fit of the uniform could be terribly unflattering.

    ·         You would have to pay for another whole set of clothing to wear.

What are your opinions on wearing a uniform?  Is it pointless or positive?

    @sortingandforting@xanga - Exactly! ^_^

@KiraWuzHerexD@xanga - That reminds me of my own grade!  Every year since about 6th grade our teachers would always have to warn the upcoming teachers we would be having the next year, haha.(:

@Sorrows_xx_Soliloquy@xanga - Lol! Yes! Same here! Thank God I'm in mostly junior and senior classes (:

    We had a school uniform.
Keep in mind that there are different levels of uniform as well.
For example, the public (government run schools) had a uniform but it was pretty much wear the right kind of shirt and the right colour pants (even then there was a chopice of colours) and some appropriate shoes (not thongs (flip-flops))
I went to a private school where we had to buy our uniform from the school and it was very regulated and so everyone looked the same.
I didn't really like the uniform, below the knee length blue tartan-like patterend skirt, white blouse, tie, white socks with 2 navy stripes vicible above the ankle (awkward height to wear socks) and polished black shoes. That said, I likes wearing the uniform because we looked good, much better than the sloppy looking public school kids, I didn't have to think about what I would wear to school and even though our uniforms were ludicrously expensive ($60-80 skirt, $40 shirt, $20 tie, $12 socks times 5 days of the week) for something less than appealing, I dodn't have to buy new clothes to wear to school all the time to avoid wearing repeat outfits all the time. It also made people less judgmental, the uniforms looked kiind of baggy and awkward on everyone and no-one was over-exposed (once a girl took her skirt up to knee length and it was a total scandal at how short her skirt was)
I am pro-uniforms, they're easy and help even the playing field between poorer and richer kids.
But hey, my only experience of not wearing a uniform was free-dress days at school and I remember how long it took me to choose an outfit and get ready on those days, and I wouldn't want to do that every day.

@VACHIRAPOR___N@xanga - me too, and even though the uniforms were expensive it saved a ton of money

@Sorrows_xx_Soliloquy@xanga - Ohoh...thanks!!=D i'm gonna download it~ The TV show is broadcasting in HK,but i haven't the programe station so i can't catch up on it.

  • jackie9714_rocks@xanga

im positive towards wearing uniform. you wouldnt have to put stress on what to wear every day.

  • WAHMBooks@xanga

It would be a big savings and less stressful in the mornings. This would mean more time to concentrate on your academics. I could live with it. Less people would be sent home for wearing inappropriate clothes to school. The positives win.

  • SurveysThatTakeupUrBOREDUM@xanga

Yeahh dress codes dont mean shit.

Everyone still violates them and gets away with it.. (mostly girls).

    [no surprise there]

I had to wear uniforms in middle school...but we had the choice of green/black/blue or white colored clothes. yeah it was weird..but i guess it could kinda help with the whole, 'distraction' part? idk...i didnt really mind it..but it takes away from individuality,

After being at a private school with uniforms for 13 years, I was entirely sick of them (ugly!) but at the same time, there was enough bullying going on that I'm personally glad that we all had to wear the same thing.  They were a bit too strict on no make-up etc. which the public schools didn't have to put up with, but they had uniforms too, so we were all in the same boat really!

  • Blood_Wolf_Girl@xanga

I would love to have a school uniform like that anime picture. But I'm happy not having to have school uniforms. I like the Japanese school uniforms, I think their cute. I hate skirts and all but I would wear a Japanese uniform. In the US they have to wear khakis, bluck. My friend has to wear a uniform where she lives, but I don't and she said 'I abuse not wearing a uniform because I shop from hot topic.' Uniforms suck. I'm so happy I moved when I did, I couldn't do the whole khakis thing, to many light colors.

I think someone, somewhere, somehow would still find a reason to have an issue with what someone wears even if everyone is wearing a uniform. People could wear the same thing but one girl may get envious of another girl because she thinks this girl looks *better* in the uniform.

  • Chii_wa_chii@xanga

I hated the idea f it when I was wearing it growing up, but then I grew to like it once I didn't have to anymore and wished I could wear one in high school. However, I realized now that it was an idealized vision I had of the uniform I would wear, and rarely are uniforms flattering. They suck all the fun and creativity out of dressing, and they make one feel unattractive if one didn't grow up wearing one.

  • msy_m3@xanga

    uniform
er... of course if it dsnt flatter one then, there's a problem..

  • x__BeautiifulxDiisaster__x@xanga

In my town there's a school that wears uniforms and last year my school was trying to get the parents to vote for uniforms at our school. The cost was waaaay to ridiculous and even though everyone thinks you don't get judged for what you wear anymore, they find other things to judge, like your shoes.

  • septembrr@xanga

i went to a strict catholic high school, so our uniforms pretty much prohibited any kind of "add-ons" to the uniform such as studded belts or colourful shoes. we did have dress down days once a month, so we were still able to express ourselves once in a while.

that being said, i did enjoy wearing a uniform. it limited the amount of time i spent organizing my outfit for the morning - i just dressed based on the weather :)

  • vikivandalist@xanga

    ·
No one can judge each other on what they wear. clunky school shoes, ballet flats, boots etc. blaz - fitted or loose? how long you wear your tie, if you wear a skirt or trousers, etc, how your hair is worn, if you wear make-up, how you accesorize, your school bag. there's so much to judge just there.

    ·         You wouldn’t have to take the time to choose
an outfit out in the morning. - you do however have to hunt through the house trying to find your tie and blazer and a school shirt.

    ·         You don’t have
to put up with others dressing in an overly-exposed manner- come to england. school shirts bought a size too small so they're stretched tight, tiny pleated skirts or tightttt trousers.

    The Downs:

    ·         You don’t have the freedom to wear what you desire. well, i kind of like my uniform. i always customised and the teachers stopped trying to make me stop wearing DMs to school.

    ·         The overall fit of the uniform could be terribly unflattering. how so? if the fit is bad then surely you're at fault for buying ill-fitting clothes.

    ·
You would have to pay for another whole set of clothing to wear - not so expensive. shirts, i  have about 6 or 7, all for about a tenner. i have one school skirt, a blazer and a tie, which have lasted me four years.
