  • School Uniforms: Positive or Pointless?

There is always the controversy over the idea if schools should require their students to wear a uniform. Currently, in my school, we do not have to wear one.

If I had to wear a uniform, as long as it was not completely ridiculous looking, I wouldn’t mind wearing it.  However, if I were to wear one, I would want the ability to be able to accessorize it the way I would like.  I would love to doll it up possibly with some studded belts, bows, and maybe even one of my Gir necklaces.

    The Ups:

    ·         No one can judge each other on what they wear.

    ·         You wouldn’t have to take the time to choose an outfit out in the morning.

    ·         You don’t have to put up with others dressing in an overly-exposed manner.

    The Downs:

    ·         You don’t have the freedom to wear what you desire.

    ·         The overall fit of the uniform could be terribly unflattering.

    ·         You would have to pay for another whole set of clothing to wear.

What are your opinions on wearing a uniform?  Is it pointless or positive?

I graduated from a school with strict uniforms, I didn't really mind it at all. It was easy to just throw them on and saved a lot of time in the morning compared to my years at public schools. Clothes just weren't the focus, which I liked. Most uniforms are very forgiving, the fabric is usually thick and loose, and while I am slender but curvy and therefore have trouble finding pants that fit well, wearing uniform kilts was a breeze. It seemed expensive to buy them at first, but when I compared it to how much money I would have spent on jeans and tshirts and sweaters and shoes at public schools, it really is cheaper, and my school had very expensive uniform distributors.

I went to a private Catholic school for 7 years of my life. Here's the reasons why I think uniforms suck in general:

    1) PEOPLE CAN STILL JUDGE YOU. Girls will wear the shortest skirt the rules allow, and if your skirt isn't as short as theirs, they'll think you're a prude, loser, nerd, ect.

    2) YOU CANNOT ACCESSORIZE IT. I mean, a pair of small studs in your ears are fine, but at my school you couldn't even wear socks that went below your ankles, or with colors or logos on them.

    3) IT'S JUST STUPID. Really? You can't choose your own damn clothes? As long as their respectable and appropriate, you should be able to wear them.

I just hated my uniforms. I hated the dresscode and everything else about it.

My school requires a uniform, and it's not so bad. It really depends on the colours/cut of the uniform. I've seen some other school uniforms, and they're really hideous.. :O

  • journalofsparkles@xanga

I would like to wear a kilt.

  • xa06@xanga

Positive! It's outrageous how skanky the girls at my high school dressed/continue to dress and the lack of control the administration had over the situation.

  • landlockedeyes@xanga

I like having to wear one, it means I don't have to live up to everyone else's fashion trends and standards, because everyone is wearing the same thing. I hate fashion, clothes are clothes.

  • xmiichelleexx@xanga

Idk..but Chace Crawford is cutestuff. ^^

I don't think it would matter to me. But I didn't have to wear a uniform when I was in high school. If I did, most likely it would have been ill-fitting and definitely not cute. :) I've seen some school uniforms that were very cute.

yes. i like uniform. plus year12s get their own personalized jerseys q=

but we have to pay for uniform-free (mufti) days for charity

i like uniforms. going to a private school for 12 years... i enjoyed wearing uniforms because i didn't have to worry about what to wear in the morning.. all i had to do was just pull our my uniform and i was done. & buying a whole new set of clothes.... its not that bad i mean you wear it all year and plus you can reuse your clothes or if it doesn't fit anymore.. give it to someone. nothing wrong with hand-me-downs as long as they still look wearable.

The only times I didn't wear uniforms was... nursery/kinder and my freshman & sophomore year of high school. I think wearing uniforms are positive. I agree with all the ups & showing school pride with wearing the uniform is nice too. Our school let's us dress down from time to time. Some school have a dress down day for activities & some have them every friday.

I kind of miss uniforms. I spend way too much time not liking what I wear to school.

  • Conformist_Metaljunk@xanga

I dislike uniforms. I was made to wear one all through school and it really annoyed me. They generally do not take full advantage of the supposed "upsides" and rarely help. I am currently studying at one of the fewschools in my state that has not got a uniform, and it helps, a lot.

My other peeve is white shirts - generally they are part of uniform. As a painter, my school shirts always got covered in paint by the end of the year!

i wore a uniform for my middle school and high school years. regarding the down, that you have to buy a whole other set of wardrobe. it really isn't as bad as anyone might think, especially since it is these uniforms that you wear most of the time of the day on weekdays. in our school, we're so consumed with school that many girls on weekdays just go home for homework/sports practice/ club. and only clothing for the weekend is basically needed. i hardly had to buy any clothes compared to my friends in public school who are constantly updating their closets.

its not bad at all though. i guess i like it because wearing uniforms, forces me to open up as a person & show my personality because the clothes i wear don't express me.

making the transition from public grammar school to private high school was intimidating for me on a number of levels, but originally the idea of a uniform really had me down, especially since i'm not much of a skirt girl. but i'll tell you, 5 years out, i kinda (definitely) miss them.

some people here have indicated that what they have is more of a dress code, because you can still pick out what brand of polo, etc. in my high school, everyone got their skirts, polos, oxfords, khakis, and blazers from the same place. same store, same colors, etc. the only things you had any choice about was the brand of knee-highs or tights, and your shoes (as long as they were not high heels, open toes, and were black, brown, or blue). it seemed so constricting. accessories had to be kept simple, no outrageous makeup, hair, or nail colors, etc. (we were also a catholic school, which i think made it a little more strict).
but it was actually pretty liberating. with everyone wearing the same thing, people talked less about what people looked like and focused on the person in front of them. sure, some people decided to have their label satchels or whatever else, but it was generally kind of frowned upon to make a huge show of yourself. uniforms just kinda became part of the background, and they were actually less uncomfortable than people think girls wore tshirts under their polos and oxfords (or tanks) and shorts under their skirts to keep comfy, etc. and it wasn't an overtly sexual thing. we got written up if skirts were too short, shirts untucked, unbuttoned too far, etc. and it really was better. no one had to know how much money you had (or not), and there weren't as many labels to use as weapons. it was, frankly, a relief. not to mention the only choices i had to make were the color of my polo during the warm months, and the color of my tights in the winter months. girls still put on makeup an tried to be pretty, but it was easier to just fit in. and the uniforms weren't outrageously expensive. and unless your weight fluctuated heavily or you destroyed your clothes, typically 2 skirts, 3 or 4 polos, a sweater and 2 button downs got you through your four years, and you really only had to worry about socks/tights. but whatever.
people make this huge deal about uniforms, and it's actually pretty cool. you don't have to worry or stress enough about what your wearing to school, and people talk to each other who otherwise maybe wouldn't. i dunno. total positive on my part.
  • Eyes_Herself@xanga

    POSITIVE.

i loved my uniform - it made life a lot easier, i saved a lot of money, and you still expressed yourself with your personality.

  • irunwithwerewolves@xanga

your ups are alllll wrong. :P my school has a uniform, and trust me, people are still as judgmental as they've always been. you DO have to take time to pick out your outfit, because, as i've said, people will judge you. and people are still very exposed...

there's nothing positive about wearing a uniform. you're forced to buy a new wardrobe full of ugly clothes. they don't help test scores, they don't help behavior. there's no point to them.

  • stickfigure_ana@xanga

Uniforms all the way! They rock.

  • hapi_viko@xanga

wow...school uniforms are so cool and the guys are cool too~~=D
But we need to wear school uniform in our school.

I wanna ask...the picture...is it a moive? So what name is it? i wanna watch~~
    Hope you will reply me~Thanks=)

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

i think i would be ok with the idea, but i wouldn't advocate it. i like picking my own clothes.

  • AzNgUrl3510@xanga

if they are cute looking like those above LOL yeah having able to accessorize them would be nice!!

then maybe i wouldnt be spending so much money on clothing and people can't judgeee

  • fashoxfashojane@xanga

i wore uniforms for 8 years. i hated it

  • valleyguru@xanga

In general, I'm not a fan of people trying to control other people by enforcing an arbitrary dress code upon them. In something like the armed forces, or a sports team, it makes sense, because they should all be of the same mind and spirit, to achieve their goal. Also in prisons, where the basic idea of being there is to have your life controlled. But in places such as schools, where discouraging individuality, and stifling creativity, can be as detrimental and distracting to many people, as the problems that those in charge seek to avoid, I don't like it.

  • Miss__Indescribable@xanga

I have to wear a uniform at my school, but it's not the way most people think of them, the skirts we wear they can only be an 1 inch  above the knee, the vests r annoying, thhe tie's are as dorky as can be, so no we don't look like sluts in a school uniform, but we don't look like nerds either, we look like nertrual students ready to take another annyoing day of school. I actually prefer uniforms though bc u don't have to worry about picking out another outfit in the morning and  nobody really cares what u look like because everybody wears the same thing!

  • panda_cupcake@xanga

I like uniforms,  and for the positive reasons you have listed.
