  • School Uniforms: Positive or Pointless?

There is always the controversy over the idea if schools should require their students to wear a uniform. Currently, in my school, we do not have to wear one.

If I had to wear a uniform, as long as it was not completely ridiculous looking, I wouldn’t mind wearing it.  However, if I were to wear one, I would want the ability to be able to accessorize it the way I would like.  I would love to doll it up possibly with some studded belts, bows, and maybe even one of my Gir necklaces.

    The Ups:

    ·         No one can judge each other on what they wear.

    ·         You wouldn’t have to take the time to choose an outfit out in the morning.

    ·         You don’t have to put up with others dressing in an overly-exposed manner.

    The Downs:

    ·         You don’t have the freedom to wear what you desire.

    ·         The overall fit of the uniform could be terribly unflattering.

    ·         You would have to pay for another whole set of clothing to wear.

What are your opinions on wearing a uniform?  Is it pointless or positive?

I like the idea, though I never had to wear them in school

  • TalithaKum88@xanga

I've been to both private schools that require uniforms and a public school that did not. I prefer having a uniform. I loved being able to just throw on a kilt and a white polo shirt. It makes life easy. Plus, it's not bad looking.

  • laurenmaureen@xanga

    I'm undecided.
I think I would wear it if I had to and make it work, but I'd prefer not to.

  • Mangonese@xanga

Never had to wear them, and I'm a little glad. Then again, I'm not. It's pretty neutral in my mind.

  • xx_weirdooe@xanga

It's pretty pointless. At my school, we have to wear uniforms because the administration wanted to reduce the numbers of fights due to gang colors. However, wearing a uniform doesn't mean that you're reducing the number of gang fights in the school. Rival gangs still know who is in what group, and they still fight even when we have uniforms. It's pretty stupid, really. Why not just have a dress code rather than uniforms?

  • princess_riceball@xanga

The idea that you wouldn't get judged on what you wear is a bit pointless if you can accessorize.  Because then they can judge you by your accessories or your hairstyle.  People will find things to pick at you about if that's what they want to do.
I never had to wear a uniform though, and I just wouldn't like to have my daughter wear one though.  I think it would be a bit expensive to buy the uniforms and then clothes for her wear outside of school.

  • imyourstargirl@xanga

I'm a bit undecided on this. Still, I know that when I buy something cute and flattering to wear, I look forward to wearing it to school.
This is different for every school (obviously, considering that some have uniforms and others don't), but I guess it just depends on the demographics and history and the catty students.

pointless. i look horrible in my black pants that don't fit which cost 50$. i don't mind paying 50$ for a pair of pants but when they're ugly r j macarthy pants i don't want to be paying such an amount. the school wants us to look respectful and united by wearing the uniform however when my pants are falling off my hips i highly doubt i look respectful. and in regards to united? i don't think wearing my XC jacket (which only a few members of the population have) makes me more united

  • kimtendo@xanga

    If it's cute I would. :3

  • dictionary____dreams@xanga

at my school last year we had to wear one. it was awful, and in the worst colors.

i hate school uniforms, in all honesty. i'm happy that where i live right now doesn't make us wear them to school.

  • Non_Cherie@xanga

    ...
you actually WANT to wear a school uniform?
    are you nuts or something?!

and by the way, they'll never let you accessorize it. ever.
    belts? HAHAHA.
    no.

  • Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga

It was fine in elementary school when the clothes were plain [white polo with navy pants or skirt] and cheap at the local department store. But once middle school/high school rolled around, there was no more uniforms and at first I was afraid of what to wear at school. Then I started to get more interested in fashion and what I wore and I think it's a good thing, even if a little distracting when people have bad/no fashion sense.

  • Sorrows_xx_Soliloquy@xanga

@xx_weirdooe@xanga - At my own school we do have a dress code.  However, it is not enforced as girls still always wear their skimpy tank-tops and shorts.  Then the guys will still be wearing pants down to their ankles.  With a dress code there really needs to be the structure and enforcement behind it. :/

@princess_riceball@xanga - Now that you put it that way you're absolutely right.  Accessorizing would definitly kill the "no judging" idea behind a uniform.

  • Sorrows_xx_Soliloquy@xanga

@Non_Cherie@xanga - I never said I want to wear one, I just mentioned if the uniform wasn't horrible I wouldn't mind wearing it.  However, I get your point.  I wouldn't ever want to wear one on my own decision!! haha

@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - Fashion is definitly a good thing considering people can really show their personality through their outfits, be that good or bad.  At least a bit of their own taste would come through! :)

mine wasn't that nice. but i made it look decent with a little bit of skirt rolling ;) schools here in England have some of the most hideous uniforms ever ! mine was a Scottish kilt with a green cardigan/jumper and blue shirt..

even so, i think if the uniform is nice, then they can be quite cool :D

  • BelisaAmbrose@xanga

It's only (mainly) in America where there are no uniforms in public schools.  Usually with a uniform there is no accessorizing, and hair, if long, is up and back.  While nearly every comment that I've read for this post says it would be expensive, the school nearly always gets them in and the Parents Association sets the price.  It's generally affordable, you buy less shop bought clothes, and it seems to me, that with gang violence being highly prevelent in American schools, this would offer the opportunity to play that down a little.

Shouldn't focus be on education and not fashion in American High Schools?

  • lifeandlovequotes@xanga

ugh we have to wear them at my school.

they look horrible and the rules for them are wayyy to strick.we have to wear belts and they have to be school approved.so do our shoes. they even have rules for our socks.it sucks majorly.
  • sozpa@xanga

We're free to wear what we want... but it HAS to be professional.
Boys: dress slacks, dress shirt with tie, dress shoes. And fall through spring, you have to wear a sweater over your shirt or a suit jacket.
Girls: skirt (has to be appropriate), blouse (again... appropriate) with NO writing/illustrations or anything explicit written on it.. and flats. And fall-spring, no open toe shoes.
No jeans (for either gender), no studs on pants, no Bermuda shorts/shorts in general, no leggings... tights are acceptable.
At first, I thought it was a bit retarded... but I realize that the girls have much MORE freedom than the guys. But, I'd prefer this than plain old uniforms. We're required to wear "professional" clothes but can still stay stylish =)

  • elephantsandwhales@xanga

I would love a school uniform.
    Reasons:
I could buy more expensive clothing for after school
Classmates couldn't judge me based on my clothing
I wouldn't have to see classmates underwear/ridiculous clothing choices
    It looks more professional
As you said, it would be easier to get dressed
    It would be less distracting

As long as it fit decently and didn't look horrible I would be extremely happy if my school switch to uniform.

  • KasumiCelesta@xanga

I think it's a positive thing, but pointless if they let you doll it up with whatever you want =/

Provided that the uniforms look nice, I would have loved to wear one. But most of the time in the U.S. I see ugly khaki pants and polo shirts. My elementary school mandated uniforms when I was in 3rd grade, and they were really ugly compared to the uniforms in Japan.

  • AznFier@xanga

I had to wear them when I was a kid, I didn't notice it then of course. Now? Not sure if I would like it or not though.

  • UnopenedSuitcases@xanga

no i dont like it.  i have to wear uniform for work, and it's so ugh. :[

  • pinkkiex53@xanga

I wear an uniform to a public high school.

Our whole school district is now uniform-ed.

    The Ups:

    ·         No one can judge each other on what they wear. - actually yes you can. you should wear a hollister polo or a k-mart polo. or are you wearing chucks or protege's. they can still judge you on even your hair or eye color.

    ·         You wouldn’t have to take the time to choose an outfit out in the morning. - yes you do. it still takes me an hour to get ready for school. i need to pick the apporaite polo, cami, pants, socks, underware, shoes etc.

    ·         You don’t have to put up with others dressing in an overly-exposed manner- yess they will. really really really short pants. wearing a button up or polo with none of the buttons buttoned.

    The Downs:

    ·         You don’t have the freedom to wear what you desire

    ·         The overall fit of the uniform could be terribly unflattering- depends where you go to buy it.

    ·         You would have to pay for another whole set of clothing to wear. yes. just think. an aero polo is  10 dollars and pants are like twenty. 10+20=30. 30*5=150 for a week of shirts and pants. this doesn't includes shoes or camis or socks.

  • pianokeysKTbug@xanga

Uniforms sound nice, but then enters reality. My school has a dress code which requires collared shirts with no more than 2 buttons unbuttoned. But girls will buy shirts and remove buttons, or they'll just buy them with no buttons. Either way, I still see way more cleavage than anyone wants to see. Then they wear their clothes too tight. They wear pants without a belt, which leads to crack-exposing. With uniforms, I believe we'd have the trouble of girls wearing their skirts too tight on the hips and butt and too loose on the waist, with no belt, and their shirts too low. If people want to show their stuff off, then they'll find some way to abuse the system. I say let teachers moniter for decency and not have the collared shirt rule. For example, if someone is showing her cleavage, then a teacher calls her out. If a boy is wearing his pants too low, he is called out. But set, strict rules don't usually work. If kids want to judge, then they won't and don't stop at clothes. They'll look at cars and houses, also. If they are that shallow, then they'll find something to pick about.
