  • Forever 21 vs. Fendi: Which is More Worth it?

I was in Forever 21 in Union Square this weekend, and it was absolute chaos. Racks of clothes everywhere, girls in maxi dresses on cell phones, harried employees, all crowding a place that sells $5.80 polyester miniskirts. And I got to thinking: is it worth it to shop at discount chains?

With $300, you could buy yourself an entire new wardrobe at Forever 21 or H&M. But it'll probably fall apart in one wash, or fade out of style before you can say "neon Ray-Bans." With that $300, you could have invested in a sleek trench coat from Burberry or bought a pair of low-end Louboutins, both of which would last you years, go with every outfit and remain perennially in vogue.

In this recession, is it better to buy lots of cheap clothing, or to buy one quality piece? Which do you tend to do?

For everyone saying that F21 and H&M are not discount stores, they definitely are. Their clothes are essentially free, people. $15 is full ticket price for a skirt.

I too can't bring myself to buy a $300 clothing item. But, buy 4 $75 dollar items on sale at JCrew...

think cost per wear. Better quaiity items last longer, so in cost per wear, your $300 actually goes a lot farther.

Fashion is constantly changing especially for those who shop at Forever 21, plus the clothes that I buy there last me a long time.

I love Forever 21! If you spend $300 on one item, you might end up hating it in the future anyways. Plus the more you wear, the more it gets worn out. Not that you shouldn't get timeless classics, you should just invest in both.

buy cheap stuffs all the way haha

Let's see -- When I can, I go for quality (and timeless fashion). I'd rather spend more money on an item and have it last me and for years. This especially is true for shoes. I am tired of buying cheap shoes that are comfy enough at the store, but after wearing them for a full work day make me want to either cry or chop off my sore feet.

i am a huge fan of H&M and F21. However, I guess I'd recommend buying clothing staples like a blazer, white tee, pumps, etc from a more expensive store while trendy items elsewhere. Anything that can carry over seasons and you will wear often i'd say invest in quality.

I wish I had $300 to buy clothes but to answer the question an entire wardrobe from Forever 21 will probably  fall apart after a few wearings but I don't care because I have a sewing machine to fix them, lol. (I don't really care to have all my clothes come from one store though, it's like being a walking advertisement.)

I usually try and stay away from stores like Forever 21 because everyone in my area wears it. The worst is seeing another girl with the same thing on, but if you splurged on a nice pair of heels to go with a 6 dollar shirt from Forever 21, then you're fine.

Cheap doesn't equal bad quality. Maybe that's what happens most of the time, but if you really inspect the quality of the cheap clothing you're buying carefully, then it'll save you lots of money for buying good clothing. That's what shopping wisely really means. It doesn't just mean being thrifty and buying all the cheap stuff. In the end, you waste more money because you have to replace them every so often. Buying wisely to me is getting quality clothes for an affordable price.

It depends on what I'm buying. Since I'm in the process of losing weight at the moment, I'm not investing in things that cost a whole bunch, (try less than $20 on clearance) but when I do reach my goal weight I plan on buying several pairs of expensive jeans. (I know first hand that the more a pair of jeans costs, the longer they last)

I firmly believe in paying cheap prices for trendy things and much more for something you will wear often, like classic must haves. (Jeans!) I also believe in buying during sales and clearances, because being greedy and spending a lot of money for a skirt or top is wasteful and selfish. In the end you harm the environment and just consume more and more to meet your wants and needs.

Of course, if I had it my way I would have a "solid" wardrobe of brand name clothing, and then another with cheap stuff. I could talk about this forever. :p

Oh, and I think Forever21 and H&M are rather cheap. I've seen stuff in magazines a lot and its like "WHAT? THATS ONLY $15?!?!? REALLY??"

Clothes from discount stores do NOT always fall apart. Stop SAYING that. If you take care of your clothes you can make them last. And designer does not always equal better quality. You are paying for the name, not the product. That being said...I'd do half and half. I'll spend more on jackets and jeans and buy pretty much everything else cheap and trendy.
