Forever 21 vs. Fendi: Which is More Worth it?
I was in Forever 21 in Union Square this weekend, and it was absolute chaos. Racks of clothes everywhere, girls in maxi dresses on cell phones, harried employees, all crowding a place that sells $5.80 polyester miniskirts. And I got to thinking: is it worth it to shop at discount chains?
With $300, you could buy yourself an entire new wardrobe at Forever 21 or H&M. But it'll probably fall apart in one wash, or fade out of style before you can say "neon Ray-Bans." With that $300, you could have invested in a sleek trench coat from Burberry or bought a pair of low-end Louboutins, both of which would last you years, go with every outfit and remain perennially in vogue.
In this recession, is it better to buy lots of cheap clothing, or to buy one quality piece? Which do you tend to do?

half and a half.
basic stuff always good quality,
trendy stuff that you are going to wear one season only, doesn't matter
Hmm..
I've never spent over 20 on an article of clothing, but that's because I go to sales, major, major sales and Marshalls, Ross, any those types of stores. soo...in this recession, that is the thing to do, imo =]
as for quantity vs quality, i'd probably go with quantity because I can be careful wghen I wear the clothes or handwash!
Wow, I must be really freaking poor because I do not consider H&M or Forever 21 to be "discount chains".
But back to your question. Seeing as how it is a recession I would be happy with the clothes I already have and spend that $300 on something much more important, like bills. But, hey, that is just me.
quantity. i have shirts from the philippines & their fake butt marketplaces from 2004 and still rock 'em. and i even have shirts from before that, so it really makes me go wide-eyed when people spend that a lot for quality, when in my experience, the discounted clothes i buy seem just as fine.
I tend to not buy clothes at all, and when I do, make sure they're worth their price. I go to those off-rack stores that sell the good stuff for much cheaper. I got a Calvin Klein bra for $12. Good brand and good price. I think I got lucky because it was an uncommon [I think?] bra size. [32C]
i have to go with the cheap ones because i dont have enough money to spend on one clothing item when i could buy 15 clothing items for the same price.
I think a better way to go at it now is to make your own =P
It depends. I consider myself as a shopaholic...and in terms of buying clothes and other stuff, there are two things that i consider : QUALITY and STYLE! If you buy the cheaper ones, the quality may be poor and you may just have a couple of months or even days to use it. The pricey ones may be tough, but it gives you the assurance of quality and usage. Still, that depends on how you wear it. Doesn't really matter if you're wearing a cheap kind of clothing, as long as you know how to take care of it. For me, i can go for both. Practicality beats style if you just know how to deal with it.
When I was in Seattle about a month ago, I thought I'd check out Forever 21 because it's coming to a mall near me and I'd get a head start to see... It's like OLD NAVY and URBAN BEHAVIOR/PLANET rolled into ONE. That's it. It's cheap fabric, occasional vintage-esque designs, semi-finished clothing marketed SUPER cheap for teenagers are to go crazy with. And i'm not even crazy about Old Navy unless I plan to get paint on them...The quality of clothes are becoming less and less about fashion but all about mass production and it makes me sad.
FENDI is at least WORTH the brand... Forever 21 is not even worth the cheap pricing. ugh
I go about half and half. The forever 21's where I live are actually becoming very nice. Clean, organized, nicely decorated. And the clothes have gotten much more chic.
Basically, I will save up my money to buy things like coats, shoes, swimwear, and sunglasses from high end designers, because those are things that I need to be of good quality. I want to get alot of wear out of them, and also don't want anything too trendy. But when it comes to my every day wardrobe, I like to be a little trendy, so I don't mind buying cheaper clothes and discarding them within months. Also, I am a studio artist, so I need clothes that I can get dirty. :)It depends on what kind of things you're buying. Trendy stuff is not worth spending $500 a piece on.
I usually go somewhere in between. Good quality clothes at a decent price. I try not to buy really cheap stuff, but will occasionally buy an expensive, high quality item.
I invest in key items and classic pieces. I buy trendy stuff cheap, and I splurge on trendy things that I like and will continue to like regradless of what everyone else says.
It depends on what I am going for. Honestly, I don't have the kind of money to blow $300 anywhere. If I want an expensive, designer piece (usually jeans, pants, shoes or purses) I save up for one. When it comes to getting a shirt to wear out to a bar once or twice, I will go to Forever 21. Depending on the piece and how you take care of it, some of their stuff actually does last a while.
I go to stores that have nice clothes on the clearance rack... but since my size pants and shirts are quite common, I tend to to fine any sometimes. I dont buy clothes all the much anymore either... I use things for 3-4 years... basically until it wears out or starts lookin a bit old. Stores like Forever 21 have really bad quality... and the things on the clearance rack aren't that great either... so I try to avoid that. However, stores like American Eagle have good quality & very good sales +clearnances.
It depends on my priorities and my budget. When I want classic and versatile items that'll last for thrive through many seasons, then I just might shell out the extra money on designer items. For designer items, I seldom pay the full suggested price. Instead, I'll go to an outlet store, or scrounge through TJ Maxx... I've found a bargain-priced Michael Kors purse at TJ Maxx, and a vintage Burberry trench coat at a thrift store! Sometimes, it just takes patience. Otherwise, I go to Forever 21 for trendy, disposable clothing and some fashion staples.
When it comes to everyday, trendy wear, I'll buy cheap stuff, like H&M. But nice clothes, the things that make up outfits I wear to work, are worth spending the extra money on to get them from higher class stores. The clothes I wear to work don't go out of style (I usually wear black pants, heels, a button down shirt, things like that) and they will last forever if you take care of them right.
WTF I wouldn't consider Forever 21 a discount store. Definitely not H&M.
forever21?
Forever 21 is a discount store?? o.O and to think I consider shopping there my "splurge" of the month. yikes.
I've actually had good luck with the clothes I buy there, I still have a shirt that's in top condition that I bought well over a year ago.
i buy most of my clothes from forever21, and the quality isn't bad.
they last me almost as long as stuff i would buy from any other store.
i wouldn't spend $300 on just one item of clothing, ever.
I love clothes, but I really cannot envision myself spending $300 on a single item of clothing. I understand the quality standpoint, but honestly, I've found many things of reasonable quality that are also reasonably priced - in some of those "cheap" stores. There are Old Navy coats in my closet that I've had for years that have worked just fine season after season.
I don't really shop at Forever 21 or H&M, mainly because their clothes don't fit me right and they aren't really my style. But I would much rather spend $300 on a lot of clothes than one piece because you it's better to have more for a lot than less for a lot.
Depends on what I am looking for. Timeless classic I'll spend more money on, and trendy is usually cheap. I don't like Forever 21 though for that exact reason- all the craziness and mess while trying to shop. I do buy their jewelry online though.
My closet consists of Forever 21. Favorite store! Good prices and good clothes.
