The Three Month Mascara Rule
(This look here was done with my three year old Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. Still looks great right? Look, no germs!)One of the most commonly advertised "rules" for mascara is that you're suppose to throw it out after three months. The reasoning behind this is that bacteria gets in the tube and can infect your eyes.
Is this a genuine issue or is it a marketing scam to get you to need to buy more mascara, thus giving cosmetic companies more money?
I believe it's the latter.
Let's look at this bacteria issue for a moment.
1) How would it get inside your mascara?
Every tube of mascara I've seen has a tiny opening with a rubber stopper that prevents too much product from getting out, and basically anything else from getting in. You can't put any dirty fingers inside and you're probably not going to spit in it or blow dirty air inside. The only place the applicator wand touches is your eyelashes. I can only speak for myself, but I usually put on eye make-up after washing my face, so theoretically I don't have germs in my eyes when I put my mascara on. On that note, your eyes don't make bacteria all by themselves and they have a natural way of flushing out anything that isn't suppose to be there (tears).
2) If it did get bacteria inside, so what?
There's bacteria in the air, which gets in your eyes. It's on our fingers, which come into contact with ours eyes and mouth all the time. If you get an eye infection, I think its more likely that it'll come from your fingers then your mascara. I got pink eye once when I was 10, and I never used any form of eye make-up back then. I haven't had any eye infections since then and my current mascara's are between 2 & 3 years old.
3) Don't we do the exact same thing with lip gloss?
We put the same wand on our lips and back into the tube everyday. As long as it doesn't go bad, people generally use the same lip gloss for several years or until its used up. If there is bacteria, it's not going in our eyes, it's going in our mouth. To me, that sounds a lot worse. No one's telling us to throw out our lip gloss after 3 months because it might make us sick.
I think its pretty illogical to think your mascara is going to breed some horrible bacteria after 3 months. Like I said above, all of my current mascaras are a few years old and I haven't had any problems. I have yet to have one dry up. I've only in my life used one mascara up and that took a few years and was one with the lash primer on one side & the mascara on the other so it was half what you get in a normal mascara. There has only be one mascara that I thought went bad, but it was 5 or 6 years old and I didn't remember if it smelled bad to begin with or not.
This is just my opinion. You don't have to hold onto your mascara until the end of the world like me, but don't toss out something that still works great and waste that money.
What do you think about the three month mascara theory? Do you hold on to your make-up for longer or less time?Guest blog submitted by Shimmer Kisser

I would rather pay another 7 bucks or whatever it costs for a new tube than risk walking around with pink eye... Besides the fact that old, dirty make-up just grosses me out.
I use the same mascara for a year or 2 before I chuck it out
I dont have any eye infection with it either
But if it starts to smell / sting* - then yes its time to throw out the mascara
i use waterproof diorshow and have been using the same tube for around 9 months now. It's as good as the day i bought it!
i think its all a bunch of mumbo jumbo
I always use the same mascara for several months, well over three, and I've never had a problem with bacteria or infection or anything. To me it'd seem like you'd know if your mascara was bad or not.
It seems like a scam to me.
bacteria in eye= possible blindness. i won't take my chances.
The bacteria, if left in the mascara tube for too long, changes the color of the mascara and makes it even clumpier if you do not use it frequently, I believe.
i wear contacts every single day and i don't chuck out my mascara until its like dry..
and i have never got an eye infection before...
and as for lipgloss, lips aren't as vulnerable or fragile as the eyes.
Bacteria gets into your mascara when you pump the wand pushing air (which contains bacteria obv.) into the tube where it can grow because of the wet, moist, and dark environment. Obviously if bacteria gets inside a mascara tube, an ideal breeding place, there will be more bacteria in the mascara raising your chances of infection versus just the normal amount of bacteria in the air or on your hands. Also, like the poster above me said, bacteria in eye=possible blindness. I'd rather not take my chances.
Also, my mascara tends to perform more poorly as time goes on so I prefer to have a fresh tube every 3 months. Plus, i like to try new things.
depends on how the texture of the mascara is.
i've thrown out tested once mascara before because it seemed dry.
i've also kept mascara for 8 months or so before.
I've never gotten any infections from mascara, but I throw them out when they start to smell. Which basically means I've never finished a tube in my life, but they've always lasted for almost a year before the smell changes.
I toss out everything make up related about 3 or 4 times a year and I never use lip gloss or a toothbrush for more than about a week... I tend to get grossed out a bit when I think about the same thing being used on my body over and over without any real way to clean it....
i think its just gross to use mascara or lipgloss for years...
when it comes to makeup, i always exchange mine at least every three months. that includes mascara, foundation, and all over face blush. even though there may be a rubber stopper and people are very careful, you also have to be aware of the air that you are surrounded in. there are many things floating around in that air that we cannot see and some of those things can collect onto any part of your makeup product. don't forget that dead skin cells could even be considered bacteria and humans flake dead skin all the time. i've seen plenty of makeup that my friends are using that have black dirt surounding the tube of lipgloss where the cap screws back on. its absolutely disgusting. i use a lot of mascara so i'm usually purchasing a new tube once a month. as for foundation and face blush, i usually exchange that every two or three months. i'm more daring with lipgloss when it comes to that rule. as long as i don't see anything on the lipgloss tube, i'll keep it around longer.
I wouldn't keep and use a mascara over a year. If you are a regular mascara user, it'll go bad/dry up in about a year. I think most people you use mascara regularly can afford to get a new one every 6 months to a year.
I still think the 3 month thing is a bit ridiculus, but do advice getting new products a regular intervals.
I dunno...I'd rather not risk it. Of course there's bacteria there, the three month rule is a warning not a paranoid plot to make us buy more mascara.
hmmm interestingg haha yeah three months is too short! i usually keep it until it drys out so maybe 6 months or so?
I don't own mascarra. The only time I've ever used it was when I borrowed it from a friend.
I keep it much longer than 3 months. Unless it changes in consistency or smells funny, I use it. Or if I get pinkeye, I toss it.
As someone studying in the medical field, I can surely tell you that you don't want to risk your eyes using products that are a few years old. You would never know if it's infected or not. Bacteria is everywhere, even in the air, cleaning and washing would not get all the bacteria away. Bacteria can reproduce in your product over time. The only reason that it's safe to use something within their recommended use period is that they ran all kinds of tests and had a confident understanding that the bacteria level within this period is safe for your body. Anything beyond that is theoretically risky. You really don't want to risk your eyes. Even within the recommended use period, you should constantly check if the smell or appearance of your product had changed. Conclusively speaking, this particular issue is beyond if your mascara is still producing great results, you don't want beauty with unnecessary expense.
Well, if you use the same tube of mascara consistently, how long would it take to be used up anyway?
yea ill use my mascara until its all used or dried up.....i dont see why youd have to replace it so often unless u were a really unhygenic dirty person...or for those who share eye makeup alot then I can see why youd wanna replace it.
Yeah, the rule does seem a bit shoddy - but I think a tube of mascara can be used in less than three months if you use it often.
whenever it's out basically
i never really have that problem. i think my longest tube of mascara has lasted me about 4 months. i reapply mascara quite often and wear it daily.
