  • Foggy Contacts: What Can I Do?

Lately, I've noticed that my contacts randomly fog over and I can barely see, unless I rapidly blink a few times. This is particularly dangerous while I'm driving. I've been using the same solution, ReNu by Bausch and Lomb for a few years now and it's never been this bad.

I've always been really careful to keep my contacts and hands clean.  I haven't changed my contact routine at all, except I did get a new prescription a few months ago (same brand of contacts). However, my bottle of solution is a few months old now...Could it have gone bad?

Do your contacts ever get foggy?  If so, what contact solutions would you suggest I use?

(I tried using Opti-Free when I first got my contacts a few years ago, but it was too harsh for my eyes.)

I use ReNu too and I like it better compared to the other brands I've used. I can think of a few possible problems and solutions. Maybe you've been wearing the contacts for too long, I think it is advised to have them on only for a maximum of around 8 hours at a stretch. Or perhaps you've been in particularly polluted areas, thats what usually happens to me.

What generally works for me is whenever the cloudiness starts to happen, I take the lenses out, wash them in the solution and put them back in. That helps a lot.

    bad solution? check for recalls

foggy contacts means your eyes are dry. try some rewetting eye drops made especially for contacts, all the major eyecare brands make one.  if that still doesn't help, either wear contacts less (they dry out your eyes), or ask your eye doc for Restasis, a prescription eyedrop that help your eyes produce more tears.

Maybe some kind of debris just got in your eyes. This happens to me sometimes too and its not something a few blinks won't fix. I don't think it's anything serious.

Have you ever got lint stuck on your contacts in your eyes? It's ever so frustrating! and it happens very often for me! Is it just me? The only way I know how to fix it is to take your contacts out and wash it... which is such a hassle!

I'm not sure if I have this same problem, but I get blurry vision randomly when I wear my contacts. I don't think I have astigmatism though becaues then my doctor would tell me, right? I'm not sure what the problem is, but the doctor did say I have sorta dry eyes.

I think throwing out that old solution and getting contact eye drops will help.

that used to happen to me alot because i have drier-than-normal eyes. the solution was to get daily disposable lenses. that way you get a fresh new pair every day and just toss them out at night. they don't cost too much more money. i'll never go back to having to clean and store lenses. also, re-wetting drops might help?

I have this problem sometimes (and I have Renu too , and can't stand Opti free, point that is funny !).
Maybe your eyes are drier than before. You must see an ophtalmologist to see if there is a problem, or to change the type of your lenses :) Some are made for drier eyes.
I personnaly changed my type of lenses, often put "blue drops" (gouttes bleues in french) in my eyes and everything is ok now.

OMG, i had the same exact problem for so long. I tried everything, every kind of solution and enzyme cleaner, rinsing them and storing them in bottled water. I even ordered a new set of contacts, and that didn't help. They would start out fine in the morning, but by around 10 am I was completely fogged over and blind.

Then I found Lobob Extra Strength cleaner. You can only get it at certain stores; Walgreens is one of them. I don't know what's different about it, but it's the ONLY thing that has helped my foggy contacts, and I haven't had any fogginess whatsoever since I started using it.

You can google "Lobob" for more info. Good luck! I feel your pain!

You should throw out the contacts and the solution and start with new contacts and solution. If it's still foggy, then you should talk to your doctor.

  • Kaythan@xanga

You should go to an optometrist for advice that you probably wouldn't find on xanga. Mine used to do that when I used Renu...I switched to Opti-Free, but like you said, it didn't work for you. I also heard somewhere that Renu causes eye fungus or something, so you should definitely consider switching.

Never had this problem unless I slept in the contacts or took a shower with them in. Avoid both, and if you still have a problem or if you don't do either of those, you may have a bad batch of lenses.

Your solution should have an expiration date listed. It could be that your contacts just need to be disposed, or that something's in your eye (I also get that foggy vision sometime that needs to be blinked away). If your contacts just need to be cleaned better, you could try Clear Care. It's the type of solution you need to leave your contacts in overnight, and don't rinse with it before you put them on b/c it's not a saline solution.

  • ivywithu@xanga

that happens to me when my contact is due.. which means i need to get a new pair
or mayb u should try carry an eye drop around.. it helps when mine got foggy

  • mewithoutu77@xanga

the last time my contacts were foggy, it was just because it was time for a new prescription because mines was getting old.  i use the same solution too and i haven't had a problem.  it could also be the brand that you're wearing, maybe there's not enough oxygen going in and out of the contact itself.

  • rapsta_chik@xanga

its either because your contacts are WAY too old and they are drying out faster than normal, or you have a very sluggish tear film. probably the latter, so make sure ur contacts are the right fit [to ensure tear flow under/over the contact], and get some eye drops to improve wettability of your ocular surface.

  • aJoLLyDork@xanga

it could be that your eyes are tired. I've had similar situation as yours then I'd try to close my eyes to try and produce tears, so possibly b/c eyes are dry. whatever you do, DO NOT wear expired contact lenses! I learned the hard way.

  • HENGOO@xanga

sometimes it can be make up! >:( i usually have eye drops and use that to wash my contacts

  • princessMic@xanga

get a new pair? maybe the protein has built up?

  • katiwitz@xanga

yeah, it's probably time to throw them away. but if its your last pair, and you hate your glasses(like i've done 100+ times, lol) try clear care. it's actually hydrogen peroxide solution, and it comes with a special case that has a little metal disk in the bottom, and it bubbles up to kill bacteria, and remove proteins from your lens. down side is that you have to leave them sit for 6 hours-- NO MATTER WHAT. it will burn the crap out of your eyes if you dont wait long enough. AND you still need regular solution, because you can't put clear care directly in your eyes, or on your contacts. it's a little more expensive, but it makes me lenses last longer.

  • M3ssyJess@xanga

hummm..it may not be the contacts...it may be your eyes...
mine used to do that and when i went for a recent checkup they said i had been using the wrong contacts b/c i had a stigmatism or something. So maybe it's time for another checkup. =)

I haven't had that problem since...

  • jemaigrirai@xanga

It's time to throw them away and get a fresh pair.

@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - Astigmatism doesn't make your eyes blurry.  It gives a double vision effect.  I have both near-sighted-ness and astigmatism, which is bad enough that I have to have special contacts for them.
