Not Just For Cooking: Olive Oil and its Many Uses
Olive oil has been used for centuries and was very popular in Ancient Greece.
I'm sure many of you have heard about the wonders of olive oil, but I doubt you know the full potential of this wonder product.
-it is high in antioxidants which neutralize damaging free radicals that cause skin aging and skin cancer
-it contains Vitamin E and Beta Carotene
-stimulates new cell generation
-tightens and tones skin
-slows the development of wrinkles
-softens skin
-reduces infection
-treats burns
-has anti-inflammatory properties
-alleviates acne, eczema, psoriasis
-helps replace elasticity
-treats dandruff
-absorbs quicklyOlive oil is a great moisturizer because it contains linoleic acid which helps prevent water from evaporating from the skin. I have always known about these amazing qualities, but not until a recent discovery did I ever think of using it in my skin care routine. The antioxidants in olive oil make it a cancer fighting ingredient.
Studies on mice have shown that mice who drink extra virgin olive oil developed skin cancer less often when exposed to UV light. Studies also showed that applying extra virgin olive oil to the mouse's skin after being exposed to UV light decreased the number of skin cancers.
Who knew that a household staple could do so much?
I am going to add extra virgin olive oil to my daily routine and I'll make sure to add it to my bath after I spend time in the sun.
What do you know about olive oil? Do you use in your skin care routine?

I use olive oil as a moisturizer on the roughest parts of my body. A little bit, and I mean a little bit, goes a long way! I even carry some in a spray bottle to the gym and use it in the steam room.
does using it too much make your skin 'immune' to its goodness after a while?
i never knew all that about olive oil. still i think imma stick to it being only in food. already got an extensive skin routine lol
I have a fear of oil, so I don't know if I could really use it on my body. Maybe a little bit wouldn't be too bad...
wrong smell ....
I use it for scrubs & to moisturize dry skin. It's so expensive now though so I try to find products that contrail olive oil in their products.
wouldnt it make your hair oily?! (referring to the dandruff part)
i've been using it as a facial moisterizer for the last 4 months and it works greatttttt! extra virgin olive oil absorbs nicely and ive noticed a change in the appearance of my pores (: since ive started ive gotten more compliments on my skin than ever!
in case anyone is wondering i have combination skin. also, i apply it, almost always, right after my shower when my skin is still warm and the mirrors are still foggy, to my entire face. i do this about every two days.
cool, I've been thinking of trying it out... haven't gotten to it yet, but will do try :)
i only use it to remove makeup
nice to know my face always gets dry patches maybe it will help!
I use it as my after-shave, because shaving makes my legs very dry and sensitive, and any other kind of after shave made my legs all red, so olive oil is the best solution for this :)
mmh.. the smell is so strong though x_x but those benefits sound so good! hahah its extensive list of multi-purpose usages is incredible though- i'll have to end up trying it out soon..
For some reason, I feel like it would clog up my pores and make me break out. But I wanna give it a try sometime...
i was told it makes you skin tan faster when mixed lemon juice, i tried last week and it really worked!
does it have to be those...vintage olive oils? or can you just use the ones from supermarket?
@Persianchaka@xanga - i guess if you have oily hair already then yea itll make it worse, same as if you have oily skin. but if you have really dry hair/skin then i guess it will be good as long as you use it in small doses. really small doses.
as far as the whole using it on your skin, i'd be too afraid to. i know i get dry skin occasionally but i'd rather use sunscreen to combat uv rays than olive oil. i'm afraid itll make me shiny lol.
@cHARMmMmm@xanga - I have acne prone skin and I started applying this every night before I go to bed and I have had no problems with acne so far.
@BimBo_HiPPo@xanga - I use the ones from the supermarket. They are fine.
@sugar_angel122@xanga - That's a good question. I'm not sure I would have to do some more research.
@Persianchaka@xanga - I've used it as like a hair mask which helps with dandruff. I mix a little bit of extra virgin olive oil with some other ingredients and it works great. It does take a little while to wash it out of your hair but it makes my hair really smooth and shiny.
@KrazyAMANDA@xanga - I used to think the same things about the smell. However, I put it on my face every night and the only time I smell it is right when I apply it and then I never smell it again.
Thanks for the most, I'm definitely trying it out this summer! :D
@thaidai@xanga - Sounds like a outine that could help me. But I have a question that hopefully you can help me with.
When you apply the olive oil, do you just put it on bare? Like, olive oil straight onto your face?
And then do you leave it on, or do you wash it off after a few hours?
- Thanks!
@ambercucumber@xanga - What I do is I cleanser my face at night and then I apply pure extra virgin olive oil all over my face. A little goes a long way. Then I take my usual night moisturizer and apply that over the olive oil and then I go to sleep. Thaidai may do something different.
My mom is Middle Eastern and she cooks everything with olive oil and also uses it for beauty remedies on her face and hair ! It really works.
