Toners: Are They Really Necessary?
For a long time now, I have questioned the use of toners. What is their purpose? Is it necessary to put them on before moisturizing?
What can it do for my skin? This has been one of the most debated questions in skincare.
So why are toners often neglected in our daily skincare regimen? Well here’s a bit of background on toners.
Toners are used after cleansing to keep the skin’s pH balanced and to protect the skin against bacteria which is great for acne prone skin. Toners make the skin feel clean and refresh. Toners are also known to tighten pores and removing excess traces of makeup. So far, toners sound great. Right?
So why the fuss? Are they really necessary? Some would say that it’s not for everyone. Toners are optimal for combination and/or oily skin. So people with mature, dry, and sensitive skin should just skip it. In today’s market, most cleansers are enough to properly cleanse the skin without the need for a toner. The last thing you want is to strip your skin of its natural oil. That will just increase oil production and worsen the problem.
On the other hand, some might say that it is essential and love the freshness that toners give after wearing a lot of makeup. It soothes the skin, moisturizes, and some provide antioxidants that help improve the overall health of the skin. Skin type shouldn’t be a determining factor.
I too have oily skin so a toner is included in my daily regimen and I like how it leaves my skin extra clean. Is it necessary? Probably not, but if you are satisfied with the extra clean feeling after using it, then by all means continue.
If you choose to use a toner, make sure to stay away from harsh astringents because they disturb the pH level and that will make your skin very oily. Look for toners that are gentle and alcohol free. Bliss Daily Detoxifying Facial Toner is a good choice. It smooths, moisturizes, and provides antioxidant protection from environmental toxins. Talk about a triple threat.
Again if you love your toner and the overall look and feel of your skin, then don’t stop using it. Truth is, this is one topic that will always be questionable.
What do you think? Are toners necessary?

I don't use a toner at all. I don't wear very much makeup on my face (just my eyes!) so removing my makeup with a baby wipe always leaves my face without a trace of makeup. Any time I've ever used a toner I look at the cotton ball and it's perfectly clean afterward. Also, toners really dry out my forehead. My forehead is always really dry, though. It's so dry that I never even wash it, and I moisturize it with a body butter twice a day, but it's still dry.
They are completely useless
I love toners!! They pick up the dirt, oil, or make up that the cleanser didn't get. You can see it on the cotton ball after using toner. That's not because my cleansers suck either. I've used Noxema, Clean and Clear, Olay, and Biore cleansers. It's also really good for tightening your pores.
I have never used a toner in my life and I really don't think I will need to.
I don't use toner. I don't know what it does, first of all, haha. It is really just too excessive for my makeup style. At most I'll wear lip gloss & eyeliner.
I use toners in place of cleansers when I'm on the go and I feel like my face is dirty but I can't wash my face.
Stripping your skin of natural oil? That sounds nasty and irreversible. I don't think it's that much of an added benefit to use it especially because, like you said, most cleansers now do the job well enough.
Personally, I think those never work.
They are GREAT at getting the dirt left behind...but they take the natural oils out your skin. A majority (not all but alot) of toner's have alcohol as their main ingredient & that dries the skin out. I read somewhere that foamy & creamy cleaners are just as good at cleaning the face as toners.
I use Mary Kay Timewise system & before they invented that, the 3 step method was cleanse, tone & moisturize but the toner was too much for me so I skipped it. Timewise is basically the first 2 steps in one but it doesnt dry out your face. they have dry/normal & combo/oily skin formulas so it's better suited for multiple skin types.
@Faith14@xanga - I havent used Noxema in years but I remember how good it was/is! I used to nip into my older sister's supply. LOL. Do they work good on combination skin (I'm dry/oily in the T-zone)? I havent used it since I was maybe 11 or 12 & I wasnt as skin savvy as I am now. I'm looking into more pocket friendly facial lines because MK is awesome but expensive when I cant replenish my supply.
I'm also wondering this too...
I dont bother using them. I can save that money and buy myself an amazing moisturizer and save myself the trouble.
Apparently I can only really use a toner in the summer months; the dry air of the colder seasons makes my face peel off. I do like the clean feeling, though.
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - I would say Noxema is pretty good on combination skin. I used the Noxema face wash that's for acne and it helped a lot. Now my skin doesn't get as many pimples, but I still have oily and dry areas. Everyone's skin is different, but I think it should work pretty good for you.
Hope that helps.
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - You can use toners that are alcohol free. I only use alcohol free toners cause I think the ones with alcohol are a bit too rough on my face.
Toners work magic for me because I have pretty oily skin. Regular use of it has regulated my oil production and smoothed out my skin tone noticeably.
Try: Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner for a non-harsh, soothing toner.
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - MK is fantastic, that's what got me hooked on using toner. However, I had to downsize to something that saved me a lot of $$$... try Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner. It was $6-7 at Target :) Good Luck!
@Faith14@xanga - Thanks! I'll get a jar soon & try it out again!
@Michelynne@xanga - Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look for it next time I'm in the store.
i rarely use toner, but according to Bobbi Brown, toner is "extra insurance for a clean face"
I only use toner when my skin is super oily or I have heavy make up.Other than that it makes me break out. I have combo skin
LOL ladies
I ditched the toner ages ago
A splash of cold water from the tap after you've cleansed is just as effective!
@abh816@xanga - I barely wear make-up too so I don't need to use a toner.
I love using toner! I use Burt's Bees and it leaves my face feeling refreshed and clean. It also picks up alot of dirt that my cleanser doesn't remove.
i want the dirt completely gone w/out stripping my natural oils...bummer...
I use toner because I have oily/combination skin. I think it works. I have been using it since summer and I hardly break out now. I can also see the makeup residue that my cleanser didn't wash off on my cotton ball. I think its good for some skin. If you have great skin, I don't think its necessary.
I keep researching about this topic too but I always get mixed answers. =/
oh yeah I also use alcohol free toners--the ones for sensitive skin. I think that makes a difference.
