  • Hey Women, Wear Skirts!

I went to Target today looking for a dress or skirt set to wear to church on Easter. There used to be a whole dress section in department stores, but not anymore! I looked, and looked, and looked, there were barely any dresses or skirts, and the ones that were there were hardly suitable for church (meaning they were mega short).

So anyway, this lack of skirts and dresses made me think about how less women wear skirts or dresses on a regular basis. Is this some new age woman trend, where women feel they have the same rights, or are in pursuit of having the same rights as men, so they wear pants like a man?

I am a woman, and I like wearing skirts, although I don’t have nearly enough of them in my wardrobe. Not that pants are unfeminine or masculine or that women shouldn’t wear them, but skirts are definitely part of a feminine attire collection. Men don’t wear skirts, which makes them a woman’s thing.

A huge argument broke out in my senior seminar class in college (the class that is supposed to “prepare” you for life after college, pssh..) The professor suggested that to be taken seriously in a job interview you needed to wear pants, while others refuted that saying that a woman should wear a skirt suit on a job interview, or that it shouldn’t matter either way as long as she is well dressed.

In essence, I feel like what she was saying was that to be taken seriously at a job you need to emulate a man, wearing something that men wears (pants) rather than what only women wear (skirts). This isn’t a great way to look at things, in my opinion. The sexes are different; men and women have different parts, what’s wrong with wearing different clothes to cover those parts?

Is wearing a skirt a statement of feminity?  Will a woman be taken more seriously when wearing pants, or when wearing a skirt?

I think either way. But I personally think wearing skirts is more femme. But taking more seriously about the female could go either way. I think all that matters would be her wearing something/anything professional she wears. Whether it's a dress pants or dress skirts.

i wear skirtsor dresses to any formal thing and i look better i skirt or dresses ,pants does not flatter my legs at all >.<....

  • SeitekiChibiNeko@xanga

i don't feel that pants are really a man's article of clothing anymore at all! and i've known a few guys who wear skirts (not kilts, but actual skirts) & encourage that trend, because men need more fun things to wear.

skirts are a pain in the ass to wear a lot of the time anyway, because i like to sit in a ghetto half-lotus LOL ...but i did wear a calf-length black skirtsuit to the interview for my current job.

in ancient china, men wore dresses while women wore pants. just throwing that out.

i think women are taken more seriously when wearing pants, since skirts are associated with femininity and unfortunately femininity is associated with being soft, obeisant, blah blah blah... all sorts of traits that aren't associated with strong leadership

  • UnopenedSuitcases@xanga

i dont think it matters either way? But then i'm not too sure... i've never really observed the business world as it pertains to the skirt/pants issue

I just bought another dress. I just started wearing dresses more, and I really want to find some more.  Nothing too short though because I have to be active and run around with my daughter.  It is hard to find anything appropriate.  I agree that it is hard to find a dress or skirt now for some horrible reason.

  • eskeemo_kisses@xanga

I do wear skirts. I actually bought one today at JC Penny's. Oh, and it's adorable! :] I was pretty excited that it cost me $24 for it.

I prefer to actually wear skirts.

I LOVE skirts, but there are always someone perving...

What's with men and their affinity for bare legs?  Even legs with tights over them.  I don't quite get it.

I'm waiting for warmer weather to wear mine.  I just bought a new one from AE today.

I like skirts, they are just not very practical for me...

I don't think it should matter whether she's wearing a skirt or a pair of pants, so long as she's suitably dressed.

That said, I have to say that I agree about the skirt/dress thing. It's hard to find a dress or a skirt that isn't entirely too short for my comfort...

I'm looking forward to when the weather is warm enough to wear skirts and dresses. There is a dress at Forever 21 that I want so badly. It's a maxi dress, and I'm 5'2" so I think it'll make my look even shorter, but I'm still absolutely in love with it.

oh man. funny b/c i went out today in search of a dress and i tried TARGET as well b/c i remembered the same thing. i was disappointed. but i thought, *maybe b/c it's spring, so the summer dresses aren't out yet?* so i let it go. but then again, clothes usually come out a whole season in advance to prepare. so i tweeted on twitter to ask for advice on where to find dresses and my best friend who works at JCP says that there are some there. someone else said gap and my cousin said walmart since taylor swift has a line of summer dresses and they're only about $14. i'm about to go check them out now! i need dresses for my cousin's sweet 16, a formal, and my big sister's baby shower! the sweet 16 is tomorrow, so i'm pretty much in desperate need right now

  • MyFreedomWings@xanga

Actually, I just don't like dresses or skirts. I'm country, I'll always be country...out here, if you don't wear something practical, it'll get ruined and you'll probably skin your knees. Better to wear something practical (and skirts aren't).
I own exactly ONE skirt, btw. I'm not sure why, but I do.
Emulate a man? Honey, if I want to be I can be tougher, badder, smarter than the average guy in the area...I don't need to pretend to be anything. HOWEVER, I'll concede that there's no way of telling what your employer associates what sort of clothes with what, so you really can't win. It's subjective.

I've basically decided this though: as soon as guys who want to wear them can wear them without too much of a fuss, I'll wear my single skirt more often. How's that? I may not be a social person, but I gotta show support for social progress.
You can be feminine regardless of what you wear. I personally, choose to be neither tomboyish or completely feminine.
I'm a girl, but I don't gotta look or act to either extreme (whatever those are, stuff we made up...obviously).

I like skirts but am picky when it comes to its style. I just where pants more because I don't have enough girls night out to wear skirts anymore.

  • MuchoMahal@xanga

But pants are so much comfortable xD

  • life_is_an_obsession@xanga

I have a couple of really pretty skirts (ankle-length, swish when I spin around, earthy tones ), I don't wear them more as a matter of convenience than of anything else. I use a bike to get around my college campus, and I haven't decided if I can do that wearing a skirt without either falling over, flashing someone, or just looking strange.

But yeah, that's just my spiel. I don't agree with your professor in any way, though I think they're just concerned with issues of equality. The concept of being judged because of one's gender is a scary one to many people, so they go on the defensive automatically and assume they WILL be discriminated against, and that they have to do something to offset it before it even starts.

Not to say that's too much of a bad thing, buuuuut I really don't think skirts in the workplace matter. So long as they aren't those teeny-tiny ones you've seen in Target :) If it's workplace appropriate, be it pants or skirts, it shouldn't matter.

honestly, 95% of my wardrobe consists of skirts and dresses. i think they have a vintage, hippie feel which is right up my alley.

i may also be partial to them because, as a recovering anorexic, i'm not quite my comfotable with my body yet, and thus don't want to go through the cruel and unusual torture that is jean shopping.

  • xiaosnowtenshi@xanga

I've never heard of such a thing for interviews, and I've seen women do both. Personally I wear pants/shorts on a daily basis so I don't have to worry about anything showing, but I love skirts/dresses just as much. And you're right, they definitely make me feel more feminine.

  • Wydurth7993@xanga

I wear skirts and dresses every day of my life! I don't mind being girly, I dare a man to think he is better than me.

  • susan0784@xanga

I'm going to agree with babyblue and state that I never thought the skirt and pants thing was a big issue at work and don't think it should be.

I don't mind wearing skirts at all but know I have big thighs so I like wearing knee length skirts, =). I hated wearing skirts before because I felt like no other girls wore skirts so neither did I, I don't know.

About the work thing, the way you are observed by your interviewer has alot to do with the way you portray yourself but you should just try to find a job you're more comfortable with and obviously you're not going to be comfortable working for someone who doesn't want to hire you because you are "feminine."

IN France we still have large departments of dresses and skirts that are NOT mini. Probably because here we like to wear dresses.

We have another pb. In some areas if you wear a skirt, no matter ho long it is you are considered as a slut.

anyway.... I hope you'll find a beautiful dress

i commented on this entry before it was featured on lovelyish. in a professional setting, i don't think that pants are necessarily deemed more masculine. however, i do feel that it is more appropriate to wear pants in a business environment because it shows less skin. not that i'm prudish, but a knee-length skirt is akin to men wearing shorts in the office.

I don't think it really matters whether a woman is in a skirt or pants. I personally love wearing skirts during the summer months and just to get dressed up, but regularly, I'm all for the pants. I just find pants a ton more convenient and comfortable.
