Foundation, concealer, and powder are three products that can give the illusion of flawless skin. You may need only one, or may combine two or three of the products.

For foundation colors, you could go a makeup counter and have the makeup artist find the shade that blends right onto your skin. After a bottle or so, you'll understand which tones you need and can revert to drugstore brands if you choose. Concealer should be one tone lighter than your foundation.

Mineral makeup is good for problematic skin, but not all liquid formulas make your face break out. Liquid is good for building up, while powder should only be used to set makeup, not conceal your skin. It's way too easy to overdo powder and it looks very obvious and fake easily.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

I'm actually very doubtful about my foundation routine but I think I'm going in the right direction.

I'm redheaded so I'm very pale. I like sheer coverage because I don't want to cover my freckles but some days I just need more than sheer, y'know?

The palest shade  of foundation I've found in the drugstore is alright but something looks unnatural about it and you're concealer is suppose to be one shade lighter than your foundation and since I'm already using the palest foundation...that shade just doens't exist for me...and I have ungodly circles under my eyes. (Thanks Mom) The palest shade of powder I can find is too dark and makes me look like I put my face in dirt if I use it.

I have a lot of red in my skin so I started using a toner with a green tint (trust me) and it does sooooo many wonders.

Go to a makeup store and get a consultation. I walked in to Sephora not knowing what the heck to get and one of the associates helped me find a foundation for my skin type and the prefect shade. (:

I seriously think Bare Escentuals foundation is the best I have ever used in my entire life. Ever

i'd say liquid and powder :)

Is liquid foundation better than powder? I hate how foundation cakes on so easily. Liquid seems to go on smoother but I have only used it once.

@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - Personally I prefer liquid to powder, because powder is very artificial compared to the skin's surface. Liquid can be blended onto the skin and portrayed as more realistic with brushes, sponges, or even your fingers.

The women (and men) at Clinique are fantastically helpful. You can go there and they will match you to a perfect foundation/powder/concealer, whatever. The best part, is if you don't want to buy it right then (which I would recommend you actually go into the natural sunlight first anyway), you can ask for a sample of it. The sample they give you is a tiny jar of foundation, but it lasts like 10 days. It's so great. I'm currently using their "Even Better" line. I like pretty full coverage foundation and it's buildable to the amount of coverage I like.

Bareminerals. I can wear the two shades they give you from winter to summer (and I go from sick pale to really tan so it's a dramatic change) and it looks totally natural. And I can never feel it. It's expensive but lasts forever. LOVE IT.

If you're using liquid, you smear it alongside the base of your jaw and see if it matches.

This tip is handy if you're trying to pick one out of the two foundations.

Then again, it's always good to have a winter foundation and a summer foundation, if you wear it often.

    i never wear foundation

go and get color matched.  any counter would do it; if just starting off with foundation i'd suggest heading to your nearest MAC and get them to match you.

@lauradamon@xanga - Totally agree.  The best beauty experts around, and so helpful and kind!

@J4MIE_YUN@xanga - Why did you come to this blog then?

I think the best thing to do is to go to a counter (whichever your favourite make-up is) and have a chat with them.  They are usually so helpful, and as professionals they know far more than us lot on xanga do!

I use barely any foundation during the day, just on little problem areas, or concealer if I have a spot.  At night I use a foundation I have gotten from the counter (after a consult) mixed on the back of my hand with a little moisturiser (otherwise I feel like I'm painting over my face.)  I then rub on it, let it soak in, like you would with moisturiser.  Otherwise it looks like paint, and is bad for your skin.  By rubbing it, and letting it soak in, you are trying to get the most flawless, and yet also the most natural, look possible.

You should try Mac's Studio Sculpt foundation and concealer. For finishing powder Makeup Forever's HD translucent powder will work.

OR if you like powder better try PurMinerals foundation. You can only buy it online but it's the best mineral foundation you can get.

For drugstore brands you can look at Revlon ColorStay and Loreal True Match

I do suggest you get foundation and concealer at the same time, and also a finishing powder. The only way to know which color is best for you is to try it out. If you go to Sephora or Mac the makeup artists will help you out.

The best foundation for any skin type is mineral foundation, it doesn't block pores and is actually GOOD for your skin - you can even sleep with it on!
The best concealer should not match your makeup...
Buy a tri-pack with a purple, yellow and green concealer.
Purple is for the grey areas such as bags beneath your eyes the green is for red pimples or any red discolouring on your skin and the yellow is for minor pimples and other areas to cover (use minimal amounts of the purple and green but they help a lot!)
Maybelline is the brand I use (in a stick) but there are many fantastic brands out there.
I generally use the yellow concealer every day, and the others for special occasions.
You should use a liquid mineral foundation first with an SPF of at least 15+. (apply this straight after moisturising)
Then apply concealer, then either a loose or pressed mineral powder to decrease shine, and hold together your make up.
A touch of blush, some bronzer and some eye make up will complete your look :D
(my mums a make up artist, any other questions I'd be happy to answer with her advice)
    xxx
