  • Shopping Would Be Tremendous If...

    Guest blog submitted by xxstellyxx

I hate going shopping. Now, don't get me wrong: I love getting new clothes and modeling new outfits. My only issue is trying things on. I absolutely despise going to the store on an icy cold day and having to strip off my pants in a very unsecured, smelly and tiny room, just to try on a new pair of skinny jeans.

Generally, I can guess my pant size. Typically it's a 0 and sometimes it's a 1. But on some unlucky day, it may end up being a double 0 or a 2. Even less lucky days will leave me shopping in the little girl's department because of my small figure. So, what is my point?

Well, I think that the world should invent a universal pant size for women. Not to say that men don't have similar problems, but I have spoken to more females who despise figuring out what pant size they wear in what brand. It seems that each brand feels that a size "2" is a different measurement, thus leaving buyers clueless as to what size is needed.

You see, if stores all had a specific measurement for a specific size, no one would have problems. You could go to the store knowing that your pant size is your pant size, so you could try pants on for looks instead of fit. You could purchase clothes for people or you could take rush shopping trips. And, on those freezing days, you could stay bundled up while shopping instead of stripping to figure out what size you will need
    in those khakis.

Case in point: let's make pant sizes universal. It would make life simpler for many people.

What do you think? Do you think it would be better if there was a universal pant size for women?

This isn't the metric system. Somethings are easily defined like shoe size; that's just a matter of how long your feet are in inches.

It just doesn't work that way for clothes, and sometimes that can be beneficial. Just somethings you have to get used to.

Plus they're never gonna decide on a "universal standard."

  • mamajoyjoy@momaroo

know exactly what you mean. i'm 0-2 as well....when i'm not pregnant anyway... i hate shopping for the fact of trying on clothes.

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

there won't be a universal standard because all these companies upsize their clothes in a misleading attempt to make women of increasingly larger sizes feel better about themselves. the rationale is that if you are a size two in one brand and a four in another, you would more likely prefer the brand that deemed you smaller.

thinner women are an increasingly diminishing target population, so we get the short end of the stick (no pun intended, lol). so this leaves us thinner women wondering where to find clothes (when a 00P doesn't fit sometimes) and everyone else not being able to rely on any accurate, or at least consistent, sizing.

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

i don't mean to imply that any group is gullible to upsizing, by the way. it frustrates everyone, but it especially bites when your pant size (not the size the tag claims it to be) is the one rapidly disappearing.

  • just_the_average_jane@xanga

Haha, I usually end up shopping in the kids section.

I think even if there were a universal standard, you would still need to try things on --the different drape and style of clothes mean they can look very different, even if the dimensions are the same.  Men's dress pants are just by waist size, I think; but my dad and brothers will still try on the pants before buying, since it makes a difference.

However, it definitely would be much easier if there were a universal standard --then at least we could skip trying on clothes just to figure out which size to buy, and instead try on clothes to see how they looked.

  • pianokeysKTbug@xanga

Yeah, it would definitely be better.

  • mooshpitmatt@xanga

    hmm..interesting idea.

shopping would be tremendous if...my body was more feminine

  • tubbz87@datingish

That's why I hate going jeans shopping.. most stores don't have 00 and the ones that do, they're either expensive or they're sold out. I don't think there could be a universal pant size.. it would be too complicated.

  • NGUYENerxx@xanga

Tell me about it. I went into Guess and they only had 20s as sizes Then I went into F21 and I fit a size 5 when I'm normally a 1. Weird. But it doesn't really bother me. I like trying on clothes.

  • UnVolume@xanga

I've noticed that in one store I could fit in anything between a size 5 to a size 11 in jeans. The numbers themselves don't really bother me but I hate when I pick out two sizes thinking one will fit and then I have to go and try on two or three more. It's frustrating and unnecessary. What's so hard about agreeing that a certain waist and hip measurement equals a specific size?

  • Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga

My old problem was a store would have my size (whateve rit was at the time, i fluctuated alot as a teen) but never the damn LENGTH! That's why I used to hate being tall because I would buy pants bigger to get the length in the legs but I looked like MC Hammer. Now I'm glad they realize you can be a size 12 & tall or a size 3 & tall so everyone can shop.

I dont think they'll ever agree on a universal size, but at long as they realize we're all different heights & sizes, we should be able to shop in peace. Sickly thin women arent in anymore. I mean if you're naturally slim & healthy, that's fine, you can tell the different between that & someone who's trying to be that way & their body cant maintain that weight because they look ill.

Today I was shopping for a recital dress. I went to sears, and the smallest size they had was 4. they were all MASSIVE. I went to Le Chateau, and all but two dresses of size XS WERE MASSIVE. but there was one dress in S that was too tight!
There's no way of getting out of it. i go by the look of clothes. I know how big a pair of pants for me is supposed to look, so if it looks like it'll fit, it usually does. the same goes for shirts and dresses.
So the next time you're shopping and you pick up a pair of pants that looks bigger then the ones you have at home, then it probably is. grab the smaller size to try on

  • MochaSprinkle@xanga

YES, and again YES! I've been a 00 in one brand's jeans and a size 7 in another brand's jeans. It's completely ridiculous too! I mean, how was I to know that I had 7 sizes of difference between jeans?! So now, my thing is that I try on things if I even have a hope of what it might be. If I have no clue, I just buy everything and I'll return what doesn't fit. Sometimes it's easier to make the decision at home with the rest of my clothing and heels. Always need heels to make a final decision! ;)

  • aerogel@xanga

i think different stores have different sizes not just around the waist but how the whole leg is tailored as well. so i think it depends of what image the store is giving off. such as stores like Ann Taylor for petites, their pants may fit on the waist but feel baggy on the hip area and at another store, the leg part will feel fitted but the waist will feel a little big. Then there's also low rises and high rises so pants sizes all depend on that. i don't think there could ever be a universal size lol

  • ayeHEARTyoo@xanga

i agree. it's so difficult for me to find jeans. i work at american eagle, and i can't even buy jeans from my work because they never fit right. even the shorts are too long for me. i would love the universal measurements that men have. women's sizes are never the same anywhere. a 2 in one place could be a 1 or a three somewhere else. add in the concept of height (long, regular, short) and the confusion grows.

  • LadyLibellule@xanga

There is a universal size.  It's called "elastic".

  • SeitekiChibiNeko@xanga

i actually go on to company's websites, look at their size charts, and then compare them to my measurements to figure out the sizes. so for a couple of brands i like, i know what size and length i should be.

i would love it if the companies switched over to the system guys had! it's so much easier for my boyfriend to buy pants then me : (

  • lesprit__descalier@xanga

    agreed.

but i generally know my size by comparing the waistline of the pants against my hand. assuming that my hand isn't growing terribly fast, making reference to it actually makes the size selection easier for me.
  • ecoutezmonhistoire@xanga

    If only!

Or maybe if they just had measurements, like they do with guy pants.Length and circumference (for the hips, waist, butt, and legs). Easy as that!
  • MiSS__NARA@xanga

ahhaa idk if this is relevant cuz i didnt read all of it, but i'm a 3 in most stores even though most ppl mistaken me as a 0 T_T

  • awokenfatality@xanga

This would work great if the cuts were the same. More expensive clothes cut their pants even more differently and more close to the shape as a women's body. While, cheaper stuff, well, they're cuts aren't going to be all the same but they'll follow a similar pattern more. It's just not how much material goes into play of the pant sizes, but cuts make a huge difference. Ever notice that a pair of skinny jeans is not exactly going to be the same size as a pair of flair at the same store? The most likely probability, is if you're a size 10 in skinny, you're going to fit into a size 10 in flare, but depending on your body shape one is going to fit you better because of the cut. One will be a perfect fit, while the other is going to leave you trying on a lower pant size or higher.

  • awokenfatality@xanga

@SeitekiChibiNeko@xanga - I try looking at their size charts, but they're just not right. They say I should wear two-four sizes bigger than what is my actual size.

  • fuzzi_mushroom@xanga

I AGREE!!! I'm the same as you- size zero, size one?

i went to charlotte russe and tried on 0s...i couldnt even get my legs in!! I swear I fit a size 5 in that store..

aeropostale size 0 fit like a charm with extra leg room

at pac sun im a size 3!

and womens shorts i dont fit anywhere...like old navy size 0 jeans perfect, size 0 shorts gigantic!

    its ridiculous..honestly!

I think they have universal pants, its an elastic band. but elastic is highly...well, informal and sweat-panty :/

  • calicaliforniaaaxo@xanga

Ah if only that would work, that would be so wonderful for a universal pant size!

I'm 5'2" and usually wear a 2,3,4,5 depending on what brand. I'm a 2 in ANF and a 3-5 in Hollister. However... I'm like a 3 in Silver jeans. It's insane, I hate it. I can be a 2-4 in AE jeans too. I have a hard time finding the right jeans because of my height. I usually try to stick with AE jeans though because those tend to fit me the best.

There's that trick where you can see if the waist fits without putting it on by seeing if the waist wraps around your neck.

Sounds funny I know, but the diameter of your neck is 1/2 that of your waist, so when they're buttoned and can wrap around your neck just right, you know they'll at least sit right.
