  • Do I Have To Move To Get Better Skin?

    Guest blog submitted by UnVolume

Which does not belong: hot cocoa, snuggling up to a roaring fire, catching uniquely beautiful snowflakes on your tongue, wearing cute winter attire, or dry skin? Of all the wonderful things about winter, dry skin is not one of the things I enjoy the most.

Ever since I've been home from school, I feel like my skin is completely parched. I wash my face and immediately moisturize, and I put petroleum jelly on the really dry spots and on my lips hoping to find soft beautiful skin in the morning. But instead, I wake up to chapped lips and skin flaking even on the oiliest part of my face (my forehead)!

This is becoming very irritating, and I really don't want to wake up anymore looking like I'm shedding skin. Besides moving to a place with a hot and humid climate, what can I do to put some moisture back into my skin?

You should do some facials that can help restore and lock in moisture, one home made facial i do is avocado mask, you can look it up online, but i just use 1/4 of an avocado, mix w/ a tea spoon of honey, fridge it for 10mins, and put it on skin and leave it on for about 15mins and rinse off. Another one that is easy to use is egg yolk mask, just crack open an egg, separate egg white and yolk. Use a cotton ball, dip and spread a thin layer of egg yolk on your face. The egg white can also be used as a mask to tighten your pores, but if you have dry skin you might not want to do that right now, instead you can put it on your hair, leave it on for 15mins and rinse, it will make your hair shiny =].

Also, i find that drinking too much coffee is not much help for healthy skin, so instead, i have switched to drinking one cup of coffee, and the rest of the day i drink tea and water. To have great skin, the amount of work we put on what goes inside our body is just as important as the outside.

Water.  Water water water water.  In your body, not on your skin.  I tend to have very dry skin, too (and living where our HIGH will be 5 below zero today doesn't help), my skin always seems much better when I'm getting enough water.

I try to get 64 ounces of pure water a day; I don't drink soda anymore, and I don't count water that I get in the form of juices, teas, or coffee.

Avoid acne washes. Use a really gentle wash and a more emolient face lotion (Cetaphil cream?). Vaseline won't moisturize, it'll only seal in moisture that is already there.

You could also try the Oil Cleansing Method with olive oil. You can Google it for more info =) good luck.

My dermatologist gave me soap-free skin cleaning samples (like Cetaphil) when I told him about my dry skin. Even if you use acne medication, remember to moisturize before the medication, and within 3 minutes after showering to keep the moisture in.

Drink lots of water and maybe use a humidifier in your room at night.

I've seen a couple of articles  on yahoo, citing studies that say the caffiene and stuff in coffee is good for your skin.I sometimes drink a lot of coffee and I haven't seen any adverse effects from it. I live in northern Indiana, so the weather is a problem, but I just use the usual skin products and lotions and seem to keep my skin fairly nice. When it gets really bad, body butter with shea in it helps.

winter is the worst for my skin. i use heavy face lotion, but also have acne, so i don't lotion my pimples and just apply acne medication on it instead. the next day my acne might not be as bad, but that area would have very dry skin. then do i lotion it or continue drying it out with acne med? very frustrating

    Drink water.
    Avoid alcohol (inside or out).

    The end.
