I Don't Feel So Pretty (an apology)
Hey guys - this is John. I wanted to check in quickly on a recent post.
- On Monday, we published LostInTheLyrics's post, "A Project on Beauty" on Lovelyish. She asked, "So, what makes you beautiful? How do you retain a sense of beauty throughout your life?"
- This morning, we put up a question of the day, "What makes you feel pretty?" Or more specifically, we said: "I admit, I sometimes feel prettier when I see my romantic interest looking at me a certain way. A special person, a special dress, a special scent... what makes you feel pretty?"
The questions are definitely similar - sorry about that! We have different people running Lovelyish on different days. We also schedule the Questions of the Day well ahead of time... oh well, that's no excuse.
LostInTheLyrics - we're sorry we published a Question of the Day that was similar to your post! We wouldn't have done that intentionally, and offer our sincere apologies. Readers, definitely check out LostInTheLyrics' "What Makes You Beautiful" campaign here!
Reading over the comments on the Question of the Day post, I found it interesting that a few people differentiated between feeling pretty versus feeling beautiful. CircularParade83 put it nicely: "Pretty is a condescending, superficial term. Pretty describes the physical. Beauty is something found far beyond what's physical." The whole discussion got some of us talking and thinking over here... pretty can definitely be a superficial thing. But if someone feels pretty, sometimes it can make them feel more confident and better about themselves inside too? At the same time, that's no substitute for inner beauty.
Do you ever feel better about yourself when you feel pretty?

I don't look in the mirror or through other peoples' eyes when it comes to that stuff. It's meaningless. What's on the inside doesn't count either, as it is imaginary. I used to go for health, but I abandoned that. The worse I am, the better I feel.
This was a pretty noble thing of you to do, John and I'm sure she'll appreciate it.
Personally, I have days I feel prettier than others... And, yes, I definitely feel more confident on the days I feel pretty. On the other hand, when I'm alone with my family and we are off camping ~ I'm wearing very little or no make-up, and those are the times I am happiest and most at peace ~ away from "rules" of society. I know my husband finds me beautiful with or without all the fuss!
Everyone says it's what's inside that counts, but it often doesn't seem that way.
I've rarely felt pretty as of late, but when I do happen to feel pretty, then yes, I feel much better.
*hugs*
Thank you so much for this. It means a lot.
I feel pretty when I know I'm loved and liked.
Hey john, yeah, what is up with that? I just got a post featured about "what's your fashion pet-peeve?" (http://weblog.lovelyish.com/lovelyish/685683835/fashion-pet-peeves-add-yours.html?page=3#) last week.
And today i just saw another post at the top by the lovelyish team asking what's your fashion pet-peeve? I just doubt people would want to answer the same thing twice you know.
I understand that different people are running lovelyish on different days, but maybe you guys should communicate (and co-ordinate) on the topics to be featured?
Just some feedback.
@fashionista - Yah, it's tough to coordinate! We will try and get better at it.
Or maybe we will just eliminate the Question of the Day feature...
YESYESYES. Though its cliched, Im the kind of "look good and feel good" kind of girl!
Some days I think I look pretty, other days I think I'm hideous... I know it's probably just fluctuations in my own perception... metaphysically though, I'm very happy with who I am. =D
So yeah, I always feel beautiful. =D
i'm pretty but yet to feel beautiful :(
1. A single flower is pretty.
The fact there is such a thing as a flower is a beautiful thing.
2. Girls are pretty; Women are beautiful.
hmm.
(Nodds). Being pretty may be a bit superficial but it does make the day easier to trudge through.
For me, someone who is pretty has some of the qualities that remind me of ladies like Natalie Portman, Princess Diana, ect. Words always have more than one meaning and connotation; it's a basic linguistics premise. Therefore, pretty for me means sharing similar qualities in ladies like these, such as possessing keen intelligence, a petite frame, delicate yet striking features, grace, patience, and confidence. Therefore, I do feel good about myself when I fulfill my own idea of pretty, because I know that I possess some or most of the qualities listed above and I strive to be this way.
For others, the meaning of pretty and beautiful can just be purely superficial. Some have made this surface distinction between pretty and beautiful by giving the example of the difference between actresses such as Michelle Pfeiffer and say an exotic Victoria's Secret model. It's hard to say exactly what categorizes these two into different types of pretty, but I think it has a lot to do with older versus new conceptions of beauty. Conceptions of beauty that WERE inherently American, which defined American identity, have evolved since due to modernity and globalization, etc. If you look at 1950s beauties and then today's often more exotic beauties, those I think that adhere to the older conceptions of what beauty used to be are then accepted in society and categorized into this basic, American conception of pretty. However, those that push this initial, conservative, boundary that historically defined pretty, are then no longer just pretty but are categorized as something more, such as beautiful or exotic. It all has to do with breaking away from societal norms on beauty, therefore redefining beauty, and then creating new categories for those who went against the grain.
This is just my ad hoc theory, but it makes a lot of sense to me.
@Misterlloyd@xanga - GREAT answer!
