  • One Dress, Five Outfits!

    Guest blog submitted by LisaNYM10

I love fashion magazines; so much that I've developed a system for reading them. First, I tear through them at warp speed, (usually this is done in the checkout aisle of a grocery store) mentally tallying the number of articles worthy of a more thorough perusal. Then, if the tally is greater than or equal to one, I buy the magazine. For my second read, I adopt a more casual "flip & pause" method; this time, dog-earring certain features, articles, and pictures of looks I want to try and copy. Finally, I attack the dog-earred parts, taking in everything that is to be taken in, and sucking every last juicy morsel off the page, much like a coyote devoring every last particle of meat off a carcass.

    I know, I'm a little nuts, it's OK, I've accepted it.

Anyway, one of my favorite articles that is a staple to all fashion mags is the "One Look, (Number) Ways." They pick a base outfit (usually a dress) and then, via the power of accessories, show you how you can turn it into like a billion different looks. This saves you money while making it appear like you have a never-ending wardrobe.

I've always thought it'd be fun to try to do something like that with my own wardrobe. Since it's finals time and I'm procrastinating, I thought I'd make my dream a reality and flex my styling muscles. So, without further ado, I present to you.....

AMAZING LISA'S AMAZING ONE LOOK: 5 WAYS!

The dress I chose is this strapless, chiffon print that I just bought but haven't worn yet.

    LOOK #1: WORK/CHURCH

As you can see, everything is black and white so it's understated. The cardigan makes the strapless element much more conservative, and the jewelry is simple but complements the geometric theme of the dress.

    LOOK #2: DATE NIGHT

I cannot stress enough how much I love red as an accent color to a black and white outfit. For this look, I used a patent leather belt (which should be worn right under the bust, where the black band is), a red satin clutch with matching satin shoes, red earrings and a statement black bead necklace. This look is probably my favorite. I tried it on and it got rave reviews.

    LOOK #3: THE WEEKENDER

So here we have a variation of Look #1 but with more color and a little bit more of a funky feel. I love mixing contrasting colors and pink and teal are among my all-time favorite combinations. The houndstooth hat is my dearest friend. He's my go-to guy to make any outfit look a little more fashionable. And, while I try to stay away from mixing prints, I think in this look it works because the hat and the dress are both B&W and neither overpowers the other.

    LOOK #4: PUNKed

One of the things I love about mainstream "punk" fashion is how it incorporates contemporary trends but makes them edgier, more individualist, and much less "paint-by-number." The finished effect is not only cutting edge; it's interesting and unique, which is very hard to pull off in a trends-obsessed society. As you can see, once again, I'm all about the contrasting hues with this look. The long-sleeved white tee and hot pink capri leggings definitely make what could be a formal outfit much more casual and street-friendly, and the bright green patent leather bag and royal purple flats (another of my favorite color combos) play well off each other.

    LOOK #5: ISLAND GIRL

For this last look, I envisioned a beach vacation outfit that was no muss, no fuss. I kept the accessories pretty minimal while trying to give the outfit an "island" flavor. The white cotton headband and white platform wedges are crisp and breezy and the chunky sky blue bangle is reminiscent of the ocean. I tied an animal print scarf to the handbag to accentuate the tropical effect. As you can see, I didn't include a necklace because there is no better accessory to a strapless dress than a nice tan, bare neckline.

Have you ever done something like this? Is there an article of clothing you can use in many ways? Which one of these looks would you wear?

@LisaNYM10@xanga - 1. I never actually said anyone's opinion was wrong. I was stating the fact that I do not agree with the term that she used to describe her outfit.

    2. The main problem here is that there are people who actually believe punk is a clothing style. All thelittle quotes in the world will not save from the fact that somewhere along the line someone looked at the punk culture and decided to exploit it. Oh, any moron can write a wiki so I really would not be citing that as a credible source of information.

    3. You're right this is a fashion blog. It is also a public forum and as such I am allowed to express my approval and/or disapproval of what is written. Also, I might be an artist, and a damn good one at that, but I sure as hell am not emo. Thought I would clear that up for you since you are clearly confusing it with punk.

@its_me_katie@xanga - Oh look I have an admirer. At least I took the time to write a well thoughtout comment that actually had a point.

@reallifedemo@xanga - No I am not offended at all! I simply disagreed with her use of the term punk when discribing her outfit. As I said above this is a public forum and as such we are all free to voice our opinions about the topic at hand.

Also for all of you apparently you all just skipped right over the part were i admitted the outfit was cute, huh? Pretty sure you did.

Oooh great post! Very creative. I like doing the same thing with my dresses as well. You've definitely given me some more ideas. Thanks :)

  • IwantTobeABC@xanga

i love these kind of posts that shows the versatility of an outfit. thanks!

  • MindfulAttention@xanga

Great post!! I myself have been leaning towards purchasing simple dresses that I can dress up in various ways.

  • xfictionwelivee@xanga

this totally enlightened me. i like most, go shopping to avoid repeated outfits, but now i can try to be as creative as you are !

  • fuzzi_mushroom@xanga

i really like the dress and how versatile it is! i think all the outfits work

granted i hate all of the shoes and most of the accessories....but i get where you're going with it :)

  • VoiceOfTheSoul

I love love LOVE the dress for date night.  The extra red touches really make it pop and give it a totally different vibe from just a plain black and white dress, yanno?

Besides, it's alot cheaper to just buy a belt and a necklace rather than an entire new ensemble.

But I do this all the time.  In the summer, I always pair a zebra print sun dress with different colors, and in the winter, I have a solid black sweater dress that also goes through a similar ritual.  I think I am going to steal your idea and snap a few pics an post them.

Hope you don't mind.  But like I said, absolutely love and admire your idea.

the background of those pictures make it a little hard to see the outfit

cute ideas!! i like the work/church and island the most. :) what a great concept... now i gotta go check out my wardrobe... or get more accessories. xD you should use polyvore to help you arrange outfits. plus it's a lot of fun and easy to use! :) i kinda agree with elusiivelove, it's kinda hard to see the outfits... and that sarah girl needs to calm down and stop correcting people on a subject that is so tangible! oh well, can't please everyone.

I love #3. That's got serious style, right there.
It ultimately proves that you've got a brain, and a creative one at that. =]

I love to do the same thing! When I order clothes for my store I love to put together combinations of outfits and offer the newest items as a package deal with a bunch of different styling suggestions. It makes it easier for my customers to add versatile pieces to their wardrobe and it gives me the chance to play stylist when I shoot models for my website. Sorry about the shameless plugging! its just exciting to see so many people on here with similar interests!
