One Dress, Five Outfits!
Guest blog submitted by LisaNYM10I love fashion magazines; so much that I've developed a system for reading them. First, I tear through them at warp speed, (usually this is done in the checkout aisle of a grocery store) mentally tallying the number of articles worthy of a more thorough perusal. Then, if the tally is greater than or equal to one, I buy the magazine. For my second read, I adopt a more casual "flip & pause" method; this time, dog-earring certain features, articles, and pictures of looks I want to try and copy. Finally, I attack the dog-earred parts, taking in everything that is to be taken in, and sucking every last juicy morsel off the page, much like a coyote devoring every last particle of meat off a carcass.
I know, I'm a little nuts, it's OK, I've accepted it.
Anyway, one of my favorite articles that is a staple to all fashion mags is the "One Look, (Number) Ways." They pick a base outfit (usually a dress) and then, via the power of accessories, show you how you can turn it into like a billion different looks. This saves you money while making it appear like you have a never-ending wardrobe.
I've always thought it'd be fun to try to do something like that with my own wardrobe. Since it's finals time and I'm procrastinating, I thought I'd make my dream a reality and flex my styling muscles. So, without further ado, I present to you.....
AMAZING LISA'S AMAZING ONE LOOK: 5 WAYS!
The dress I chose is this strapless, chiffon print that I just bought but haven't worn yet.
As you can see, everything is black and white so it's understated. The cardigan makes the strapless element much more conservative, and the jewelry is simple but complements the geometric theme of the dress.
LOOK #2: DATE NIGHT
I cannot stress enough how much I love red as an accent color to a black and white outfit. For this look, I used a patent leather belt (which should be worn right under the bust, where the black band is), a red satin clutch with matching satin shoes, red earrings and a statement black bead necklace. This look is probably my favorite. I tried it on and it got rave reviews.
LOOK #3: THE WEEKENDER
So here we have a variation of Look #1 but with more color and a little bit more of a funky feel. I love mixing contrasting colors and pink and teal are among my all-time favorite combinations. The houndstooth hat is my dearest friend. He's my go-to guy to make any outfit look a little more fashionable. And, while I try to stay away from mixing prints, I think in this look it works because the hat and the dress are both B&W and neither overpowers the other.
LOOK #4: PUNKed
One of the things I love about mainstream "punk" fashion is how it incorporates contemporary trends but makes them edgier, more individualist, and much less "paint-by-number." The finished effect is not only cutting edge; it's interesting and unique, which is very hard to pull off in a trends-obsessed society. As you can see, once again, I'm all about the contrasting hues with this look. The long-sleeved white tee and hot pink capri leggings definitely make what could be a formal outfit much more casual and street-friendly, and the bright green patent leather bag and royal purple flats (another of my favorite color combos) play well off each other.
LOOK #5: ISLAND GIRL
For this last look, I envisioned a beach vacation outfit that was no muss, no fuss. I kept the accessories pretty minimal while trying to give the outfit an "island" flavor. The white cotton headband and white platform wedges are crisp and breezy and the chunky sky blue bangle is reminiscent of the ocean. I tied an animal print scarf to the handbag to accentuate the tropical effect. As you can see, I didn't include a necklace because there is no better accessory to a strapless dress than a nice tan, bare neckline.
Have you ever done something like this? Is there an article of clothing you can use in many ways? Which one of these looks would you wear?

this is a great post. I do the same type of thing with clothes
"One of the things I love about mainstream "punk" fashion is how it incorporates contemporary trends but makes them edgier, more individualist, and much less "paint-by-number.""
There are two things wrong with that statement:
1. Punk is not a fashion statement, ever. It is a lifestyle that has a style of music that follows it. Throwing a bunch of wild prints and bright colors on, no matter how cute, does not make you punk. Yes I realise you put it in quotes. The point still stands.
2: That is not individualist. I can take you to any store, mall, or high school anywhere in America right now and show you upwards of 20 girls wearing that style. As such this is very much so "paint-by-number". Also there is no such thing as being an individual. If there was then you would have to be the only human on the face of the earth.
you should put these all on and model them for us =)
great combos.
They all look really great. I wish I could do that with a dress I bought last year but I still haven't worn yet.
@Liera@xanga - agree
outfits are not bad
I loved this entry! I'm trying to do this more with my own clothes.
those are really cute. i could never put outfits like that together - i'm a t-shirt and jeans girl - but i love looking at the different ways you can dress up a dress!
Kewl...
i like the first
I need to learn how to do this more with my wardrobe instead of buying 15 different things in attempt to avoid repeating the same outfits over and over.
Hey there, I see you got some negative comments on your post. I think it was great though. =] I don't dress up much, and really don't even have a big wardrobe, but it's nice to see someone sharing their love of fashion with the fashion-challenged like me. Keep up the good work, and I agree with Liera though... you should put it all on and model it, girl! =]
I think all of your ways of wearing that dress are really cute.
hey thanks for the subscription and friend invite. pretty sweet xanga =]
love the outfits.
Hm, not really seeing the punk in that 'punk' look. But still, nice post.

1. It's rude to call someone else's opinion "wrong". You probably should take into consideration that maybe, just maybe, your opinions are not universal.
2. Notice that the look was referred to as MAINSTREAM "punk" fashion. So first of all, no one said the look was trying to emulate what you believe is "true" punk. It's a mainstream adaptation of a funkier, edgier style. That's all. Relax. The quotes DO matter, regardless of whether or not you choose to acknowledge them. And, just for the record, "punk" is a fashion trend. Ask anyone who follows fashion. Wiki it, if you must.
3. This was a fashion blog. It's not a "I'm a tormented artist, no one understands me, I need to go write some lyrics that are cryptic and sad and make fun of people I think I'm more original than" blog. Lighten up.
you have a few good ideas and i think with a little development youcould really pull it all together into a few chic ideas - check out my polyvore for fashion ideas and other examples of how to wear an item several ways:

I like it.
Whoa this was really cool! I loved this and want to try it out!
nice!
i like "date night" the best
I love...all of them! I'm always looking for different ways to wear dresses I already have, it's a fun task.
haha i love your different looks!
I agree with you, LisaNYM10@xanga. Right when I saw her comment I wanted to LOL because she was taking things so damn seriously. I applaud the amount of concern and valiant effort she put into that single comment. Hahahaha :)
5 different looks!
I love red as an accent, as well. I have a red sweater that I pull over anything dark for a splash of color.
@sarahb_86@xanga - Sorry, did someone offend you? Cuz you realize that nothing here was directed at any individual...
I like date night and island girl.
I dont like to use an item for more than 2 outfits
