  • Foundation Favorites: What Are Some Alternatives?

Guest post submitted by a Lovelyish reader.

    Foundation
I was told to wear a shade lighter. That only made me look pale. A woman from the counter told me to sample foundation on my wrist. Seriously? That's just way off for me! I was always stuck between honey, ivory, beige, sandy beige, soft beige, warm, and medium. I seriously couldn't find a foundation that matched my skin tone AND provide coverage for years!

    Bare Minerals

I was given a starter's kit of Bare Minerals when I was in sophomore year. My skin type was all over the place: combination, sensitive, dry. This foundation has been my favorite by far. Easy application, great coverage and easy to remove by water.
But I ran out and couldn't afford the $70 kit again.

I was on a search again and found out that my shade was a creamy natural/natural. Not many brands carry this "in-between" shade.

    L'Oreal Infallible
is my foundation for the winter.

It works for my combination skin.
It covers up blemishes well and any other redness.

    Rimmel Cool Matte 16Hr Foundation
    is for summer.

    My skin becomes extremely oily.
I also tan easily so this was bought in a few shades darker.
I believe the foundation lasts fairly well and the coverage is great.

    e.l.f. minerals foundation

I received this as a present since E.L.F. products are $1. If you are on a budget and can't afford Bare Minerals, buy this.  Since I have some redness, I wear a liquid foundation and apply minerals over for a nice finish. It does provide that extra coverage and it lasts longer, too.

What foundation do you use? What foundations do you not recommend?

i don't use foundation. but when i did, i used this type of powdery one..i think L'Oreal [i honestly cannot remember]. i DO NOT recommend liquid ones, they just make people look super fake.

Bareminerals! The only kind I can even deal with anymore. It's the best by far, looks the best, feels the best. The starter kit is expensive yes but if you just buy the foundation afterward the containers are bigger and they last for a really long time. I bought the starter kit then just a foundation (totaling about $100) and I still have some of both, probably won't need to get anymore until next spring I'm thinking (and then just another $30). I apply it everyday as well. I LOVE it, it covers the scar that I have and any acne. It's amazing and worth the price. I don't even think it's that expensive when you consider how many times with foundation you have to "try again" with unflattering shades or multiple products or when it runs out. This is a little on the expensive side true but it's quality and reliable and it lasts forever. I say just go for it. It's good for all skin types and it blends incredibly and people never think that you're wearing makeup, they just say how good your skin looks. I love it. I'm sold. I'll never go back.

I'm sure tons will say Mac Studio Fix Fluid but that's one I wouldn't recommend. Great coverage but it oxidizes too quickly leaving you looking like a pumpkin within hours of wear. I'm pretty happy with estee lauder double wear and sheseido liquid at the moment. Powder foundations are too drying and irritate my extremely dry and sensitive skin.

i love bare minerals. i end up getting it from ebay most of the time now. it's cheaper.

do the elf powders work well?

i currently use either mark matteifying pressed face powder (as a really sheer foundation)

    or

L'Oreal bare naturales foundation.  Over both I alternate between MAC blot and NYC translucent powder to cover my oily spots!

I love Everyday Minerals and they have a

Free Sample Makeup Kit  when I ordered mine last year I only had to pay $4 shipping & handling, it was a great deal.  And another thing I like about them is that when I want to try a new shade I can buy a small one: they are very reasonably priced and generous with the amount they give too.

I use Collection 2000 im skint, and sometimes Fcuk but its running out.

  • IXOYE_AD@xanga

I use max-factor's cover up stick. It works well.

  • peacelove__CALLIE@xanga

I use maybelline Pure Makeup, and more recently their mineral power makeup. I love it. I am really afraid to try the more expensive foundations, what if it doesnt work out?

I dont recommend heavy thick foundations like covergirl, to anyone. I hate that stuff. I also dont recommend the kind that creases easily. It will go into your lines on your face and make you look ancient.

  • abcxunt@xanga

i used that l`oreal power stuff to cover the bags under my eyes, otherwise nothing else.

  • pxrxcowgirl@xanga

I use the NYC coverup stick in light (cheap and perfect for a concealor... ive tried some that cost up to $50 and nothing has been better than this!) and then Cover Girl Aqua Smooth in Ivory.  Its a little pale on me, but the next shade is too dark.  But it is light and perfect on my skin... so i put a little bit of mineral bronzer over it and I am good to go.

  • StrewnOutinDisarray@xanga

I really, really want to try some type of mineral make up and since so many out there are so expensive, I have been inclined to order the Avon version.  I haven't yet, but I've been told it works well.  Anyone else use the Avon version?

    thank you for subscribing (:

  • tellmyghost@xanga

i absolutely love bare minerals as well. although it's expensive, i find that it's absolutely worth it. i did, however, find a flea market near me that sells it for cheap! the woman actually has her own website: http://www.hsnliquidators.com/. the mineral veil and other full size foundations are only ten dollars! it's no gimmick. i bought one myself :)

  • MoonFaeEyryan@xanga

I use Benefit's Some Kinda Gorgeous. I have many skin tones (I have vitiligo) and it covers everything well, making my skin look even... and I love how soft and non-greasy it feels!

  • amissong@xanga

Revlon Colorstay~ best drugstore foundation I've tried so far! It matches my skin tone really well <3

  • phuck_diz_shiz@xanga

CoverGirl - TrueBlend - works pretty good for me

  • jmgbme@xanga

I just converted to the Rimmel foundation you mentioned and I am definitey a believer. It's way better than Revelon--I find after a bit Revelon mousse foundation doesn't have the staying power, at least not on my oily skin.

I was using Almay clear complexion. I still have it but I"m not sure if I'll be going back to it or not.

I use the Rimmel and then follow it up with Corn Silk translucent mattifying powder. It holds up pretty well.

  • PopStar48@xanga

Maybelline Age Rewind Cream (medium coverage), Giorgio Armani Face Fabric (sheer) for winter and Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Compact for summer.

  • lilwetduckie@momaroo

I love Physicians Formula. I use their mineral wear. I don't wear a liquid foundation anymore 'cause it doesn't suit my skin well. I used to bounce around with liquid foundations and when my mom introduced me to mineral makeup -- I haven't wanted to use anything since. I also have a red undertone and love the multi-color corrector (green) they sell in stores. If I wear makeup out those are the first two things I put on. =)

  • somethingbluee@xanga

i love my giorgio armani silk foundation,
to me, it's the best one so far!

submitted by a Lovelyish reader? hm. I wasn't aware my post would be up here...

  • Nicola_Six@xanga

if you like mineral foundation, but can't tolerate the bismuth in it (bare minerals has it), try everyday minerals, which is bismuth-free. i'm allergic to bismuth - when i tried bare minerals, i broke out and my skin was very very itchy.
